Jain plans music academy
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

NEW ROLE: Ravindra Jain

Tomorrow, music director-lyricist Ravindra Jain turns 60. To mark the occasion, he has announced plans to start a music academy which will have branches in Bhopal and New Delhi.

"The Madhya Pradesh government gave me some land for the academy. In Delhi too, I have some space, where I plan to set up this academy. I want to set up such an academy in Mumbai too, and am working towards that. My whole intention is to keep our culture and heritage alive by teaching music to talented people," Jain says.

To raise funds for the academy, Jain plans to organise a musical event in May. "Anybody who is keen to learn music is welcome to come to the academy. There will be special concessions for visually-impaired and underprivileged people. We will have many visiting professors from the industry, for whom we shall make arrangements," says the blind musician.

Jain is best-known for his work in Chor Machaye Shor, Geet Gaata Chal, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se, Chitchor, Fakira, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Henna. Two of his songs — Sajna Hai Mujhe from Saudagar and Sun Sahiba Sun from Ram Teri Ganga Maili — are being currently played as remixes.

What does he think of remixes? Jain says: "They shouldn't be done. We created good songs for the ears. Now they create dirty videos. Remixes aren't part of our culture."

Why has he cut down on Hindi films? He replies: "I didn't cut down. It's just that some of the people I worked with have are concentrating on television, and I too have been doing television projects. I have recently worked on the films Ek Aur Amar Prem and Pyar Ki Koi Seema Nahin."

Jain says he has many dreams for the coming decade. "I had recorded four songs for a project on Tansen with the Rajshris. I hope to complete that.

There is a serial on Durga I have begun work on too. I want to do more on these historical and mythological characters, as musically, it's a big challenge to create songs that reflect that era," he says. That should give him plenty of creative satisfaction.

Ravindra Jain

Ravindra Jain (or Ravinder Jain, also sometimes credited as Ravinder) is an Indian Music Composer. He was born completely blind.

He is considered the most notable of the Hindi music directors in the 1970s and early 1980s. His song genre is light, classical music. He is famous for melodious music and noted for their soothing qualities.

Jain's greatest discovery is claimed by some to be the noted playback singer, Dr. K. J. Yesudas, who has sung in many of his pictures. Together they gave the Hindi film industry some memorable songs like 'Oo goriya re' (Naiyya), 'Beethi hui raat ki' (Sunayna) and 'Gori tera gaon' (Chitchor). It is said that Jain was so fascinated by the way Yesudas sang his songs that Yesudas' face was the first he wanted to see if he ever received his vision. Jain has worked on songs after his liaison with Yesudas, but he has failed to attain the pinnacle of glory he achieved with the master singer during the 1970s.

ALL FOR MELODY Ravindra Jain in New Delhi
'There are no short cuts in music,' says veteran music composer Ravindra Jain who has come up with a music school in Delhi. Already in operation, Ravindra Jain Academy of Music and Fine Arts, situated in Karkardooma Institutional Area, offers one-year certificate course. "I come across talented youngsters who copy the hit songs quite well but have no knowledge of swar and raga. The industry needs original singers, not copy cats, already a lot of damage has been done to music courtesy the remixes. Here we will educate those gifted in music moulding the hobby into career." Jain remarks it seems there is no copyright act in this country. "There is only right to copy." Rejecting the assertion that remixes make the new generation aware of the classics, Jain holds, "Every generation has its own music. I won't mind if they are not aware of the old hits provided they have something melodious to listen in their times." Career prospects Talking about the career prospects, Jain says, "I created a place for myself when there were greats like Naushad, Madan Mohan, Laxmikant Pyarelal and S.D. Burman at the top of their careers. And I have always given chance to youngsters, because for a young composer like me it was difficult to get the dates of Lata and Ashaji. Today with television getting bigger by the day and people also listening to non film music there are plenty of options for the youngsters." Jain who brought folk music to the national consciousness with films like Saudagar, Chitchor, Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se and later in Nadiya Ke Paar and Brijbhoomi. He also worked with Raj Kapoor in Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Henna before moving to the small screen where he again created magic with chaupais in Ramayan. "I have always kept my music simple and folk music has always attracted me. I believe a lot has been done with the folk music of Uttar Pradesh, Bengal and Himachal Pradesh. Now I am working with the folk traditions of Bundelkhand and Chhattisgarh. As for small screen, I moved to television because the producers and directors I was comfortable working with shifted to the small screen. But I am making a comeback with Rajshri's Vivah."

He signs off with the Vivah number that is already on the hit list, "Tujhko Ji Bhar Main Dekhoon, Mujhe Haq Hai."

Noted music director Ravinder Jain sings a song after he joined the BJP

It was an amusing "homecoming" for music director Ravindra Jain as he joined the BJP today, some three weeks after he showed up at the AICC headquarters to lend a helping hand to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha elections. And that was not enough. For the media personnel, the musician also sang a Hindi song composed by him for the BJP, describing Mrs Gandhi as a "videshi bahu", much to the comfort of the BJP leaders. Mr Jain said he had all along been a BJP supporter and would vigorously campaign for the party in the elections. When a reporter asked him what he was doing at the BJP office only days after his visit to the AICC headquarter in support of Mrs Gandhi, this is what Mr Jain had to say: "Yahan se kab gaya tha main, jo ab aane pe achhrajh hai, yahan sau baar gaya thaa, kyo ab gaane pe achhrajh hai (when did I leave this place, that you are surprised now, I have sung 100 times here, so why are you surprised now)." Union Minister and BJP candidate for the Sadar Lok Sabha seat in Delhi Vijay Goel, who was also present at the press conference, stated that he had known Mr Jain for years as a BJP supporter. "Before Mr Jain went to the AICC headquarters, he came to me and told me that he has been invited by the Congress to the party office. He also told me that he was in dilemma since he has always supported the BJP. However, I advised him to go to the AICC and not turn down the invitation," Mr Goel added. Mr Jain had visited the AICC headquarters on March 20 and praised the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, causing acute embarrassment to the Congress leaders.

The music director of the "Ramayana" fame praised Mr Vajpayee as "someone above controversy" and refused to say anything against him. He was significantly silent on Mrs Gandhi. — UNI

Chitchor (1976) (also transliterated as Chit Chor) is a Hindi romantic musical film. The film's title means "Heart Stealer" in Hindi.

Contents

Pitamber Chaudhri, headmaster of a school in Madhupur, has a daughter named Geeta. Geeta is a typical village belle, naive, and childish, and always in the company of a little boy who is her neighbour.

Pitamber's older daughter, Meera, who lives in Mumbai, informs Pitamber of the arrival of a young engineer who could be a possible match for Geeta. Pitamber is asked to welcome him and treat him well. Without further question, Pitamber and family do just that when the visitor arrives by train. Vinod, the newcomer, takes an instant liking to the family and to Geeta in particular, even teaching her to sing. The family begins to talk about the possibility of Vinod and Geeta marrying, and life is good until another letter from Meera arrives. Pitamber is shocked to read that the engineer whom Meera was sending to meet the family has not yet arrived, but will be coming soon. Vinod is only an overseer who happened to come early, as his boss was delayed and could not make it as planned.

The family is disappointed. They asks Geeta to stop seeing Vinod and turn her attention to Sunil, the engineer, but Geeta cannot forget Vinod. Sunil is fond of Geeta and agrees to the engagement, which is quickly arranged. When Vinod hears of the engagement, he prepares to leave the village before the ceremony. Upon hearing this, Geeta insists that she will marry Vinod, against the wishes of her family. She rushes to the train station, but not before the train leaves. Disheartened, she turns back and is received and driven back to her house by Sunil. To her surprise, Vinod is at the house. All misconceptions have been cleared up, and Geeta and Vinod are to be engaged.

I thank you all music lovers for carrying on this great thread on Ravindra Jain. He is truly one of the greats in Hindi film music with his amazing scores for Chitchor, Paheli and many other movies.

I had made this request earlier but I take this chance to do it again. I have this small piece of song recorded from a noisy distant radio station way back in 1990. I am sure the singers are Suresh Wadkar and Hemlata (RJ had a lot to do with the carriers of both these singers). The music has the typical RJ brand.I have been hunting for this song for the last 16 years. Can anyone identify the movie or album from which this song is ?

Please pardon the poor audio quality.

Thanks in advance,

Paresh
