Ravindra Jain

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Ravindra Jain (or Ravinder Jain, also sometimes credited as Ravinder) is an Indian Music Composer. He was born completely blind.

He is considered the most notable of the Hindi music directors in the 1970s and early 1980s. His song genre is light, classical music. He is famous for melodious music and noted for their soothing qualities.

Jain's greatest discovery is claimed by some to be the noted playback singer, Dr. K. J. Yesudas, who has sung in many of his pictures. Together they gave the Hindi film industry some memorable songs like 'Oo goriya re' (Naiyya), 'Beethi hui raat ki' (Sunayna) and 'Gori tera gaon' (Chitchor). It is said that Jain was so fascinated by the way Yesudas sang his songs that Yesudas' face was the first he wanted to see if he ever received his vision. Jain has worked on songs after his liaison with Yesudas, but he has failed to attain the pinnacle of glory he achieved with the master singer during the 1970s.

He also provided music for epic Ramayana by Ramanand Sagar.

His latest soundtrack Vivaah is his comeback to bollywood after many years starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao.

Interview with Ravindra Jain

A fine balance
RAVINDRA JAIN, veteran music composer, has written the lyrics and composed the music for Vivah. Here he talks about the film and its music.

Raj Kumar Barjatya, Sooraj Barjatya and Ravinder Jain at the recording studio

What do you feel about Vivah as a film?

RJ: Two families joined as one . . . the desire of two hearts . . . binding two households together . . . this is Vivah. You know what the situation is in our society: you get married first, then you learn to love your spouse. But the message in this film is the opposite: love before marriage. Indeed, our hero in the film is Prem!

This story covers a short time span. From the engagement to the wedding. Yet Sooraj Barjatya, (the director) has handled it so beautifully, arranged the whole thing so well, that you will be amazed.

Although it is hardly surprising, given his track record. In fact, ever since his film Saudagar, I have been saying, 'tera mera saath rahe . . . aur maine pyar kiya . . . isliye hum saath saath hain . . . ab aap yeh na poochhna ki hum aapke hain kaun?!'

Tell us about the experience of doing the music for this film.

RJ: Sooraj is like my son. I have known him since he was a child. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Firstly, he is very clear in his mind, and secondly, his concepts are also very clear. Also, he has a wonderful way of explaining and putting things across. I sat and created all the songs right there in the Rajshri office. Which is exactly the way I worked for Saudagar also. Raj babu was a great help in telling me the story, explaining the plot to me.

I have created this music with total involvement, with a lot of feeling and emotion, and I think that our listeners, those who are familiar with Rajshri films, will not be disappointed.

How would you describe the songs and music?

RJ: I've kept it very simple, nothing too technical. It has soul, it has tradition. You'll like it. It's traditional in terms of rasa, and sur – melody – breathes life into it. I've used traditional quatrains and doha style couplets. I wanted to keep it close to our literary heritage, something people could relate to, that they had a deep connection with.

How about the playback singers?

RJ: Aparna, a child from my class, has given her voice to the song sung by the child Poonam. The heroine's songs have been sung by Shreya Ghoshal. All the singers who have worked with us have performed with true dedication and commitment. Shreya, Udit, Suresh, Shaanu, Sudesh Bhosale, Pamela Jain, all of them.

What role do the songs play in the film?

RJ: Actually, the songs are not just there for the sake of adding a song. Each one is a scene which adds to the story. Each song is special. For example, this tune, 'Milkar kya bolein' is a Himachali folk tune. Raj babu has always loved it. The pahadi folk songs are lovely. Then you have 'Oji ji' – during this song, the affectionate relationship between the sisters gets established. And there's a sense of excitement, the hero is expected at any moment . . . as I said, each song is part of the story. I have used some words from brijbhasha in this song, the names of some typical sweetmeats.

'Milan abhi aadha adhura hai' . . . before this song there is a four-line bol, very lovely . . . Raj babu likes this best of all the songs . . . it's not the typical thing where the heroine sings and dances. But it expresses her inner feelings, her thoughts, there's some masti to it, it is rhythmic.

Which is your favourite song from this film?

RJ: 'Mujhe haq hai'. This song . . . uske rang . . . the writing has such colour in it . . . it's a little urdu-oriented, ghazal ka rang hai . . . but I've kept it sweet and melodious. In keeping with the tradition of Rajshri films. And both Shreya aur Udit have rendered it beautifully. I think you'll like the arrangement and the orchestration too. Also, it's been picturised very well. 'Rajshri ke liye gaaoon . . . mujhe haq hai . . . saath Sooraj ka nibhaaoon . . . mujhe haq hai . . .' Aur Sooraj kahenge . . . 'Kaam dada se karaaoon . . . mujhe haq hai!'

Tell us about some of the other songs which stand out.

RJ: For the first time the hero shows the heroine their room, I came up with three songs. Raj babu liked 'Yehi wo ghar hai priye' a lot. Then I thought, I should create a song to please the younger generation. So I came up with 'Hamari shaadi mein'. Babul Supriyo sings it. It's a very lively song. After all, the older audience is familiar with the Rajshri style, but there should be something young people can relate to as well.

Any other songs you would like to mention?

RJ: The song of the two samdhiyon is very unique. In fact the whole situation is very unusual. They are both singing about their respective children . . . 'is this the same little chap who once' . . . A lot of people think that this song is the most significant song of the film, and Sooraj personally also likes it and the whole situation in which it is sung.

As a music director, what can you tell us?

RJ: Sangeet is founded on two pillars. Swar (sound) is one, and taal (rhythm, beat) the other. Both are equally important. Swar captures cadence and rhythm is connected to the heartbeat. It's a cycle. At times one dominates, at times the other. I think it is very important to keep a balance between the two. Or else sometimes the song seems to gallop and at other times to drag. This proportionate balance is what I try to achieve in my songs. And I think this is what you will enjoy in the music of this film.
