Significance of 'Yada Yada hi Dharmasya...'

So the hugely anticipated marriage happened today! I'll not be commenting on the various bloopers (and boy were there many!) or the annoyances caused by trying to merge so many things in such a poorly edited way as others have done it far better and with more humour than I can muster just now 😊. However, I saw some comments about the verses from the Bhagavad Gita used and thought about the significance of this in the context of the wedding. Unusual to see this verse from Chapter 4, verses 7-8 from the Gita in a wedding, my favourite verses of all time. However, we usually get the standard "Mangalam Bhagwan Vishnu..." chant and also here I have noticed (in the sindoor episode) they used some beautiful chants- I tried to find them but struggled. Was sure it was a Laxmi-Narayan jaap of some sort but cannot document it!

So the wording and meaning of what we heard today, which many will know is of course:

"Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharata
Abhythanamadharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham

Paritranaya sadhunang vinashay cha dushkritam
Dharmasangsthapanarthay sambhabami yuge yuge" translated as (there are many variations but one I really like),

"Whenever there is decline in righteousness, O Bharata (or son of),
And there is exaltation of unrighteousness, then I Myself come forth;

For the protection of the good, for the destruction of evil-doers,
For the sake of firmly establishing righteousness, I manifest myself in every age."

My entirely subjective interpretation and I have no idea if the CVs thought it like this (others may disagree too) was that this was the proclamation of good winning over evil. The words in the Gita were famously spoken by Shri Krishna to Arjuna, they were the turning point of the entirety of the Mahabharata war. Krishna finally revealed himself to Arjuna, who was giving up on the battlefield and to allay his doubts and fears, Krishna gave him Gita "gyaan". This chapter and verse were fundamental.

Here, I feel there was a symbolism- Swara being Arjuna who has fought for her aims and has stood strong, Sanksaar having been her "sarathi", charioteer- like Krishna was to Arjuna- he literally drove Arjuna's chariot and despite the hard and almost unbearable decisions Arjuna had to make and face in the war, he was assured by Krishna that it was necessary for good and to defeat evil and due to this God himself stood with him.

Please don't think I am literally comparing- I know Sanskaar is far from godly! But what I am saying is he is both a medium and a guide for Swara in her journey. She is able to fight a war because of him and she will not be defeated as he stands by her. The playing of these verses was a reminder that God stands with them as in the show they are on the side of right and whatever is happening is God's will. Hence, God has manifested his power by putting them in a situation, which however hard it seems, is what they really need to do- hence showing the inevitability of their union.

Sorry for rambling so much and like I said, it's only a symbolic (NOT in the slightest literal) interpretation. If anyone has any views, similar or different, please do share!

I took two meanings out of them playing those verses. One as you said to signify the good (swasan) uniting to defeat the evil (ragya, i see both of them as evil).

But the verses about manifesting time and again over the yugas made my shipper heart think of a forever after for SwaSan 😳 Sort of like it is preordained that these two will come together time and again defeating all odds, the typical saat janmo ka bandhan 😆

Beautiful post yar...really, really significant.

"Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharata
Abhythanamadharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham

Paritranaya sadhunang vinashay cha dushkritam
Dharmasangsthapanarthay sambhabami yuge yuge"

It just encompasses everything. An all time favourite of the mass, ever since Mahabarath was shown last year, the popularity of these verses have become phenomenal...I'm sure there'll be a significance on why that mantra was recited during the wedding and not the normal jaap.

Your take makes sense...for me, this also proves that SwaSan is here to to stay and there'll not be SwaLak...

Oh yes very good second point- really like that and agree- the whole meant to be forever in every birth message underlined! Thanks:)

I haven't posted in this forum ever, being kind of a silent reader😊 But here I wanted to state an opinion. As you said the verse was the turning point of Mahabarat, perhaps they took it to symbolize that the wedding is the turning point of Swaragini as well. What I mean to say is that there is no turning back to Sanskar, Swara or Lakshya. Their destinies have been finally sealed. Perhaps it indicates that even if Ragini's truth comes out and Lakshya wants to reunite with Swara his chance is lost forever.
As a Swasan fan this thought thrills me, 😳so I thought I should share it with others😃

that was not supposed to be a wedding mantra at all shruti.
just a VO type thing.
and yes your translation and interpretations are probably spot on.

also...more than everything...i think it means that no matter what...what God ordains, comes to pass for good needs to win ultimately...and order needs to reign.
