Wives of the Pandavas (other than Draupadi)

So, some people seem to be freaking out over the fact that Arjuna ki chaar-chaar biwiyaan hain!!

Even Starbharat has confirmed that Arjuna has four wives. I know it seems funnily ironic that he went on an exile for breaking a marriage rule, but ended up marrying three more times as well during the same exile. But vo to aap Bhagwan Ved Vyasa se hi poochhiye ki unhone Arjun se exile mein teen aur shaadiyaan kyun karwaaye...only Bhagwan Ved Vyasa can answer all your queries.

Anyway, my topic is "Wives of the Pandavas (other than Draupadi)". This is just to give a reassurance that within the family itself, Arjuna has wonderful company as far as multiple marriages are concerned. Fortunately for him, he is not alone - yes, ALL his brothers had multiple wives too.

I am repeating this statement for the nth time on the forum - Draupadi NEVER banned the Pandavas from having multiple wives. The ONLY condition was that these "other" wives shouldn't come to Indraprastha. That's it. Which is why Draupadi freaked out when Subhi came to IP after her shaadi to Arjuna. But she accepted her completely on account of being Govind ki behen.

So, who are these "other" wives of the Pandavas? Let's take a look, each Pandava separately, oldest to youngest -

Yudhishthira - Devika, daughter of Govasana of the Saivya tribe. They had a son called Yaudheya.

Bhima - Hidimbi (Hidimbaa), a rakshasi, and they had a son called Ghatotkacha; Valandhara, daughter of the King of Kashi, with whom he had a son called Sarwaga.

Arjuna - A nagkanya called Uloopi, their son was called Irawan; Arjuna fell in love with Chitrangada, the princess of Manipur, and they had a son called Babruvahana; Arjuna's last biwi was none other than Krishna's own priya behen Subhadra, who became mother to the heroic Abhimanyu.

Nakula - Chedi ki raajkumari Karenumati with whom he had a son, Niramaitra

Sahadeva - Vijaya, daughter of the Madra king, Dyutimat. They had a son called Suhotra.

My source of information is the KMG translation, the link of which is given below -

There are various other versions which state that the Pandavas had wives OTHER than the ones mentioned above. Can someone please share more information regarding this? The KMG translation mentions only the above wives. I have read that Sahadeva also married the daughter of Jarasandha, the king of Magadha.

P.S. - If the DTs think that this topic can be merged with the Pandava AT, please do so.

Shani.. these are the only 9 wives of Pandavas I have come across.. I do not have any idea about the other versions.. from my dull memory I think Arjuna took one more wife when he was in his Aswamedha campaign.. some previous birth connection.. dont remember the name.. may be someone can help..
but this your posts reminded me of my long time question on Ulupi and Chitrangada.. which I will take to the D&D thread.. thanks for that 😊

👍🏼

I did read that Arjuna took a wife during the Ashwamedha campaign - but I was highly surprised to read it...I guess the most accurate info would come directly from the original Ved Vyasa version itself. And if Ved Vyasa himself says that Arjuna had four wives...

That's what I referred to. Other versions put down OTHER wives for the Pandavas as well besides the ones mentioned in the Ved Vyasa version.

Duri definitely WASN'T joking!! I can guarantee you about that!!

You can read the entire MB online on this website.
This is the KMG translation of Ved Vyasa's MB - the most accurate English translation of the original work.

Did you check my question on D&D? two wives of Arjuna are missing there in the part you shared while his exile does mention them.. so I wonder how accurate this part is..
