Shah Rukh Khan says Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi remains favourite, declares 'Mona jaisi koi nahi'

At the preview launch of Aryan Khan’s directorial debut series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, Shah Rukh Khan made headlines with his candid exchange with actor Mona Singh. The actor praised her work but questioned why she has so often been cast as a mother despite her relatively young age.

Speaking on stage, Shah Rukh recalled her popular TV show. “Bohot saalon se kehta aa raha hu, ki mera favourite show tha Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. Usmein meri ek favourite cheez thi Mona. Aur aaj bhi mujhe aisa lagta hai ki Mona Jaisi koi nahi. But ek complain hai yaar. Chhoti si umar mein bhi ye mummy ka role kyu karti ho yaar tum? Bohot achha karti ho,” he said.

Mona, known for her sharp wit, gave a lighthearted response that drew laughter from the audience. “Shah Rukh ab main kya bolu yaar? Aap hero Jawan banke baithe huye ho. Toh kisi na kisiko toh mummy ka role karna padega na? How will I get younger roles?” she said.

In response, Shah Rukh surprised her with a promise. “Agli baar hum dono karenge saath mein. Pakka. 100 percent!” he declared, suggesting he would ensure she gets a lead role opposite him in the future.

The exchange sparked buzz, highlighting the typecasting that often shadows female actors once they cross a certain age, irrespective of talent or screen presence. While Shah Rukh’s comment was made in jest, it drew attention to the limitations actresses frequently face in mainstream cinema.

Mona Singh has in recent years played multiple on-screen mother characters. She was seen as Abhay Verma’s mother in the 2023 horror-comedy Munjya. Earlier, she portrayed Gurpreet Kaur Chaddha, Laal’s mother, in Laal Singh Chaddha alongside Aamir Khan in 2022.

For Shah Rukh, the moment doubled as playful banter and an acknowledgement of Mona’s calibre. For Mona, it offered both humour and an unexpected assurance from one of Bollywood’s biggest names.
