Short stories work best as short films. There is a certain brevity and inherent pace that must not be tampered with. Especially, if the source material relies on an O Henry ending.

O Henry's short stories, especially The Last Leaf, that Lootera is based on, have the structure of a joke. It's all about the punchline. You need to say it with all the detail you can, keep your audience wondering and before they know it, deliver that last line with sweet timing and get out of there.

The good news is that Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera delivers that last line with perfection.

If only the makers had kept the rest of the storytelling equally tight and gripping. Thanks to the concept of the interval, our films need two climactic twists. One for the interval point and one for the ending. With the spoiler of a title, the interval point here is really not much of a twist. And how riveted you can be for 70 minutes waiting for that titular reveal has everything to do with your patience level and affinity for gorgeously framed images.

The film does work in moments — like when Varun (Ranveer Singh) tries to teach Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha) how to draw leaves in her painting, or when she confronts him about his feelings for her, the gripping chase in the second half and the last leaf in the climax.

Imagine Kunal Kohli's Fanaa adapted for the 1950s, better done, restrained but with the slowish pretension of a wannabe classic. Fine period detailing and tragedy alone don't make for a classic.

If stories of dying people make for a classic, the "no smoking" ads before films are classics. "Afsos Mukesh Bachch Na Saka".

This is a film where you can see that the director learnt his craft from the Bhansali school of grandeur, decadence and drama, but the film also wants to employ Kashyap's minimalist, slice-of-life matter-of-factness and restraint in the same story. It's not an easy rope walk and but no points for trying that. Because this results in many moments of complete dissonance. The background score spells out and underlines every emotion, while the performances are understated.

To be fair to the cast, Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha do an earnest job, keeping the performances completely real. Sonakshi especially turns in a career best, while Adil Hussain, Arif Zakaria and Barun Chanda bring in a lot of credibility to the characters.

This is the kind of film you might get bored watching in the theatres but find your mom crying to, when it plays on TV. Maybe it's generation gap, maybe a threshold for patience...

But I found myself restless in my seat, bored by the indulgence of a filmmaker to turn what seemed like a short, fun story with a smart twist on paper into an unwarranted drama with epic delusions of tragedy.Short stories work best as short films. For me, this is the best movie so far in 2013. I am too tired to write a long review so will come up with a detailed review later BUT, Lootera belongs to Sonakshi! Bloody brilliant!👏👏👏
Only disappointment- Ranvir Singh. Messed up dialogue delivery.

Lootera Sunday Collection Update. Very Good.

Lootera is registering big jump on Sunday from Friday and Saturday as reports are excellent from samples received. Film is good in Mumbai City. Whereas occupancies are excellent in Delhi and Gurgaon.

Lootera is registering an occupancy of 50-60% on average in Mumbai in selected cinemas which is good. Occupancy is as huge as 80% in Delhi today. In Gurgaon occupancy is in range of 80-90%. That's big. Film after a slow start on Friday and a good jump on Saturday has come to full form on Sunday. Film only worry is the mass centers. We are still to receive update on that. If film is doing well there also expect big numbers for Sunday.

Lootera has collected around 10.5 crore nett in first two days. Which is still below par despite good jump on Saturday. If Sunday is good then film will near 18-19 crore nett mark which will bring some kind of respectability. Plus film needs to sustain well on weekdays as opening is just average for the filmn. Let's hope for that.

Watched Lootera. Second day second show😆
Vikramaditya Motwane and Amit Tridevi are in top form.
Vikramaditya's picturisation is amazing. Cant believe he worked under SLB coz hes so much better than him. Even the minute details like the leaves or the birds chirping in the background or the Ramayana enactment were paid attention to.
There were many songs but the way they were merged with the story made them even better .
As people have already pointed out the first half was a bit slow but the second half was intense.
Sonakshi was exceptional . Seeing her do something other than her routine flowerpot roles made me happy. She looked so good sans makeup in the second half.
I can never imagine someone as energetic as Ranveer would
play a gentle character. Future superstar or not the guy is one versatile actor.
Vikrant Massey and the person who played Sonakshi's father were amazing.
The last few scenes are magical. ⭐️

Lootera- So I finally managed to watch the film that was the most awaited movie of 2013 on my list. I had huge expectations from this film and I'm really very happy that the film met all of my expectations. Frankly speaking, this is the best movie for me so far, in 2013. Right from the starting 'Fuh Se Phantom' to the end credits rolling with the song Ankahee, I was completely engrossed in the movie and think this is one movie that can substitute the word 'Beautiful' in the English dictionary.
The film doesn't have a strong story to back on and I would blame the makers to give away whatever was left in the story in the second trailer. If they had just kept all these things a secret, the twist in the tale would have had a better impact on me. I love the way the movie starts with the visuals of the Durga Puja and the 'jatra' and transports you back to the 1950's. Superb art direction with every detailing done the way it should be done. Cinematography was brilliant to say the least. Hats off the the DOP. And the biggest contribution to this beautiful and almost perfect movie was by Vikramaditya. I am in love with his visualization. So happy that such a director with amazing aesthetic sense is a part of our Indian film industry.
Performance wise, everyone gave a good performance but the star of the movie was Sonakshi. She has left me speechless because she doesn't even have much dialogues in the second half of the movie, its just with her eyes and expressions that she manages to keep you glued to the screen. One of the best performances given by any female lead in the last few years, and one of the biggest assets of Sonakshi is that she is a graceful actress. The grace with which she enacted scenes even when she was sick in the film is worth appreciating. However, the biggest disappointment was Ranvir Singh. I had expected a lot from him but I don't why but his scenes and acting always looked half baked. The biggest botheration in his performance was his dialogue delivery; in most of the scenes, i couldn't understand what he was saying, sounded like he was chewing his own words.I thought Vikrant was much better than Ranveer and wanted to see more of him in the movie.
Songs were great. For me , the album too is one of the best that has come out this year.I love the way every song was merged will the scenes and were played at the right time. The picturization of Manmarziyaan and especially Zinda are FANTASTIC!👏 One of the reasons why I was waiting for this movie was because I love short stories and The Last Leaf is one of my favourites, and it was a treat to watch the climax of the movie along with Zinda playing in the background. I literally saw the whole ending of the Last Leaf coming alive on screen...beautiful representation of the story. I have a LOT more to say but that would mean I have to give spoiler tags after every line, so I would keep those things for the Lootera Discussion Thread.
To sum up, I would reinforce what I said earlier- Lootera can be a substitution for the word 'Beautiful' in the English dictionary.I won't give any ratings to the film because I genuinely feel the film is above all the ratings. Just like you can't judge a painting, I am not able to judge Lootera. I am just happy that as an aspirant who wants to work in the industry, I came out of the theatre learning a lot from Vikramaditya Motwane.😊

Lootera starring Sonakshi Sinha & Ranveer Singh was released today. The movie is failed to obtain an expected kick start on the first opening day. The movie is seem to be a big flop on the first day. According to initial date Lootera is only collecting 4 - 4.5 crores on the grand opening day.

West Bengal seems to be the highest grosser for Lootera, owing to the film being shot there. The makers of the film will expect way better numbers on Saturday and Sunday if the film is to put up a decent box office total on the charts.

Following is daily updated chart for Box Office Collection of Lootera..

1st Day Collections : -----------> 4-5 Crores

Lootera : 1st Saturday Box Office Collections

July 7th, 2013 by Koimoi.com Team

Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera is being hailed as a masterpiece by all and sundry. The positive reviews enthralling everybody and with that the film's collections saw a raise of 22% since its opening day collections. On its 2nd day, the film fared well, especially in the multiplexes and raked up an income of 5.50 crores at the domestic box office. With this, the total box office collections of Lootera stand at 10 crores.

Ranveer Singh in Lootera Movie Stills

Extremely subtle and beautiful, the film is mainly directed to the intelligentsia who can appreciate the soul of O.Henry's The Last Leaf in Motwane's work. With strong performances from both Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh, one can expect the positive word of mouth to help hike its collections today. The film's total collections on its opening weekend can rise up to 15 crores if the set predictions come true.
