Chapter 4

Zoya helped Ayaan pick up the baggage from the carousel and place them on the trolley. Humaira slumped on the top most suit case and refused to move.

"You have to push the trolley with me sitting on it. I am too tired to walk." she said. They had finally arrived in Bhopal. It had been a long journey Zoya had to admit. She was already exhausted when she had reached Delhi only to realize that their travel was not over and they had to wait around to catch another flight from Delhi to Bhopal. Humaira had thrown her hands up in the air and sulked like a baby only to be pacified by Ayaan and Zoya that it would not be a long flight and it would be over soon.

Zoya looked at Humaira adoringly as she pouted and refused to walk while Ayaan cajoled her to take the last few steps and make it to the exit of the airport where he knew his mother and brother would be waiting eagerly to meet their new daughter in law.

"Humaira" Zoya said giving her hand to Humaira and pulling her away from the trolley. "Come on behave like an adult"

"Okay, fine" said Humaira grudgingly but immediately got up and dusted her jeans. She knew Zoya meant business when she called her Humaira instead of Humi.

"Ayaan could you please wait while we use the restroom and freshen up a bit" Zoya said taking her handbag from the pile of luggage on their trolley and pulling Humaira away with her.

When they came back after 15 minutes Humaira was looking her old self, pretty and perky with a fresh new coat of lipstick and hair nicely brushed and tied in a ponytail.

"Okay then what are we waiting for, let's go and meet my new Ammi" Humaira said with a bright smile and marched ahead of them. Ayaan and Zoya looked at each other and rolled their eyes and shaking their head followed Humaira as she made her way out of the airport.

Ayaan pushed the trolley and caught up with Humaira outside the airport. He searched for the face that would always brighten up his days right from childhood. The face that could stand out in a sea of millions with its humility and grace. The face that could make him forget his anxieties and acted as a balm for all the aches and pains that life threw at him. The face that taught him to be kind and humble and made him believe that he could face anything and everything.

Ayaan not only loved his mother, he admired her for the person she was and person she encouraged him to be.

"Ammi!!!!" he finally saw her standing near the end of the line waiting for him. He ran towards her and hugged her. Zoya caught hold of the stranded trolley and kept a pace behind Humaira. Ayaan finally turned towards Humaira and introduced her to Dilshad. Humaira said her salaam just the way Zoya had taught her, Dilshad replied, hugged Humaira and kissed the forehead of her future daughter in law. When it was Zoya's turn to be introduced, she thought a handshake would suffice but she was pleasantly surprised when she was engulfed in a hug. Zoya was taken aback by the warmth exuded by the elder lady and she could not imagine that she had just met her, she felt as if she had known her all her life. The image of the long red hair that Zoya had always associated with her mother came to her mind once again. Zoya hugged her back and could sense a lifelong friendship developing there.

"Where's bhaijaan?" asked Ayaan, looking over his mother's shoulder.

"Asad had an important meeting with the lawyers. He will meet us at home in an hour" explained Dilshad

"Bhaijaan and his work!! I can't get mad at him though. He IS paying for my education" grinned Ayaan

Zoya stepped out of the shower. She dried her hair lightly and tied the towel around her a little more tightly. It felt heavenly to finally look and feel clean. She took the clothes out of her luggage and slipped into her jeans and shirt.

She loved the room she was to stay in. It had huge bay windows with a spectacular view of the huge backyard lined with trees on all sides. Living in the heart of the city she did not get much of a chance to enjoy it but she loved nature and couldn't wait to explore the yard later in her own time.  

She was overwhelmed by the size of the house as soon as the car had pulled up in the driveway. The awe had just increased ten folds as soon as she saw more of the house. She had assumed that she would be sharing a room with Humaira but Humaira's room was somewhere upstairs next to Dilshad's room. There were so many doors upstairs leading to different bedrooms and guestrooms that she had stopped counting after 7 doors. Her entire apartment could fit into their foyer, she thought. She had expected Ayaan to be from a wealthy family but had not expected his house to be a mini palace.

She was now even more impressed by Ayaan's and Dilshad's behavior. They were humble and kind and did not have any airs about them inspite of living in the lap of luxury.

Zoya got dressed and decided to leave her hair damp, snaking along her neck and back. The wet hair gave her a much needed coolness in the heat. She came out of her room and not finding anybody around decided to go into the yard. The heat of the mid afternoon sun hit her and she scrunched her eyes. She wanted to retreat right back into her air conditioned room when she spotted a swing on the far left corner of the house under the shade of a bougainvillea plant. The plant had all but draped itself on the swing with its heavy branches laden with vibrant pink flowers. It looked picture perfect, right out of a magazine clearly reflecting the love and care lavished on it.  It looked too inviting specially to get away from the sun and she decided to make it her favorite spot while she was here in this house.

Zoya's eyelids were getting heavy, she looked at her watch, still showing New York time it was two in the morning there. She yawned, maybe I can lie down on this swing for a little while. I hope it's appropriate, she thought. In a short time she was laying on the soft mattress with her hair fanned out on the silk pillow.

Asad couldn't wait to be home. He was anxious to meet his baby brother. Even though he was not going to be his baby anymore what with him getting married and all. The fool, he grinned.

Asad pulled into the driveway and even before his car could come to a complete halt he saw someone laying on the swing. It was his favorite spot in the whole house, that's where he spent his lazy Sunday afternoons with his coffee and newspaper.  It was usually tucked away and hidden from view, especially from the driveway, surrounded by thick flowery hedges that he had ordered the gardener to plant around it.  The shrubs had been cut short, close to the ground to accommodate for the tents which will soon be erected for Ayaan's wedding celebration.

He started walking towards the swing and the sleeping girl. He moved closer to her.  His hands instinctively moved towards her face which was partially covered by her hair. He moved the hair which he noted was damp and put them behind her ear. He took in her heart shaped face and her cute little nose and bow shaped lips. She was the most amazingly beautiful creature he had ever seen. She looked peaceful and had a child like quality on her. Now he finally understood the phase 'sleeping like a baby'. He smiled to himself. She reminded him of a sleeping princess and he wondered if he kissed her she would come to life.
