The story of Creation of Lanka

Posted: 7 years ago
Post yesterdays episode we are clearly headed in the direction of the creation of Lanka-the land of Lankapati Ravan

i know many people may have found it hideous, funny, perhaps even weird that Parvati is shown making such a demandLOL-but there is a very popular story behind it(actually there are many versions-so posting some of them hereBig smile)(although i seriously wish the Cvs could have handled this better without making Parvati look like a tantrum throwerThumbs DownOuch)

Point is that Lankas creation itself and it being handed over to Ravan, itself created the foundation towards the Ramayan happening-Ravan getting powerful, misusing his powers and using Lanka as his fortress, the birth of Rama to end his evils, and so on and so forth i guess youll know the rest of the storySmile

So in my opinion Parvatis demand, the creation of Lanka and it being given to Ravaan was the beginning of Ravans rise.It was just a means of getting the ball rolling towards the birth of Lord Vishnu in the form of Shri Ram-beacuse somewhere down the line every single event, however small or bit leads to a big happening.Thats what happens here

There is also a story behind the construction of Golden Lanka. When Lord Shiva married Parvati, he asked Vishwakarma to build a beautiful palace for them to reside. Vishwakarma put up a palace made of gold! For the housewarming ceremony, Shiva invited the wise Ravana to perform the "Grihapravesh" ritual. After the sacred ceremony when Shiva asked Ravana to ask anything in return as "Dakshina", Ravana, overwhelmed with the beauty and grandeur of the palace, asked Shiva for the golden palace itself! Shiva was obliged to accede to Ravana's wish, and the Golden Lanka became Ravana's palace.

"Once Narada (a saint and a devotee of Sri Narayana, one of the trinities), went to Parvati (consort of Lord Shiva, one of the trinities) and told her that Lakshmi (Sri Narayana's consort), lives in a beautiful palace while you live in a graveyard and that too in the cold Himalayan mountains.

Listening to this Parvati went to Lord Shiva and told him that she wanted to live in the best palace that the world has ever seen. To satisfy his wifes wishes Lord Shiva had Viswakarma build one of the greatest wonders in the world for a palace. It was a Golden Palace which was so splendid in all aspects that Viswakarma had to say "This is by far my best creation".

It is a custom that the first time someone moves into a house we perform a "Griha Pravesha" homam (house entering ceremony). For this she wanted the "Greatest Brahmin" on earth to perform this ceremony for her.

She called upon Ravana to do it.

Ravana performed the ceremony so well, that Parvati was uttrerly pleased and told Ravana to ask for a boon in return for his service. She said "Ask anything and it shall be yours"

Ravana said "I want this palace" :)

Parvati was totally dumbstruck and angry. Since she was bound by the boon she gave up the palace to him. But also cursed him and said that "This palace and all those who live in this land shall always remain in conflict"

And to this day Lanka remains a place which sees conflicts everyday."

Once Devi Parvati request to Lord Shiva to built a palace. But Shiva denied as he love Vairagya. After several request from Parvati finally Lord Shiva ordered Vishwakarma to build a palace. Vishwakarma went to Lanka Dweepa and built a wonderful palace. Then Lord Shiva wanted to do griha pravesa. At that time King Ravana was doing Tapasya for Lord Shiva. Pleased by his Tapasya, Shiva & Parvati appeared before him. Shiva gave boons. Ravana was Brahmin by birth & a master of four Vedas, so Parvati asked Ravana to perform puja for their griha pravesa. King Ravana accepted and did all Pujas. Pleased by the dedication of Ravana in doing pujas, Devi Parvati told him to take a boon from her and Ravana asked the palace as a boon. Devi Parvati accepted and gave Lanka Palace to Ravana as Dakshina. Then Ravana request Devi Parvati to live in Lanka. Devi Parvati told that she will be in the form of Shankari Devi (Shakti peeth) as long as Ravan follows her word or else she will leave Lanka. But after some time Ravana brought Sita Mata from Lord Sri Rama. Then Shankari Mata told Ravan to return Sita Mata to Sri Rama. But he refused and Shankari Devi left Lanka.
there are more versions i suppose, but i am unable to find themLOL
please post more stories here if you find themSmile

Shruti thanks for sharing these stories. You do feel bad for the actors when the writers are responsible for shaping characters on screen which can make u look good or bad and get all the flak. Confused

Indeed he was a great scholar , But, due to ignorance and the things he did.. For what he is now widely famous for that villianious role.. In this track maybe the Moral part is, one shouldn't show ignorance towards right path or be proudy about his capability otherwise, it's the very first thing that can make or break your future.Big smile

Don't blame me.. you asked for the stories..LOL.. here they come..

This one by far is authentic .. this was shown in Raavana serial ( Zee TV ). Certain parts of this story are not authenticated by any sources rather was the interpretation of the author.
Ravana-Certain Facts You Never Heard (Then & Now)

Ravana's Background:

Daitya King Sukesa was married to Gandharva princess, Manimaya and had three sons with her: Malyavantha, Sumali, and Mali. The three brothers performed a great penance and had boons from Bramha Deva. The Great Sculptor Architect of Daityas' namely Maya (Mayasur) built Swarna Lanka for the three. The 3 brothers settle in Lanka and started invading all the three Lokas and harassing people. Then Devaganas along with their King Indra went to Lord Siva seeking his help. Lord Siva directed them to Lord Vishnu and then Vishnu came for the rescue of all the three Lokas. He killed Mali with his Sudarashana Chakra. Afraid of Vishnu, Sumali and Malyavanth left Lanka and ran to Pathala Lok. Then Kubera, the son of Vishwavasu took the control of Lanka and started living there.

Sumali/Sumalaya married to Kethu Mathi and gave birth to a daughter Kaikasi and also had some sons. The escaped Sumali wished her daughter Kaikasi to marry most powerful being in the world so as to produce and exceptional heir who can then re-establish the Rakshasa Kingdom in the 3 lokas. She searched all over the world and selected the great sage and Kubera's father Vishwavasu to marry. Vishwavasu is a son of Pulastya Bramha, who is one of the ten Prajapathis called Bramha-Manas Putras.

Hiding her identity Kaikasi married Vishwavasu and one fine day asked him about having sons. Vishwavasu warned her that the time she asked about having sons is evening time (asur sandhya) and it is not the right time. If at all anybody born on that time they would be Rakhas. But she insisted him and first gave birth to 2 sons – Dasa Kanta and Kumbha Karna; later at night she gave birth to Vibheeshana. Thus there is a vast difference in the first 2 and later.

Ravana was thus a Daitya Bramhana. He is a great devotee of Lord Siva and mastered in 4 Vedas and 6 Upanishads. Thus he is also symbolically said Dasagreeva. Once Kaikasi asked Ravana about having a world's greatest Siva linga at Lanka for her daily puja. Arrogant Ravana, tried to take Kailasa to Lanka. He lifted Kailasa on his shoulders. Maa Parvathi asked Lord Siva about the leaning of Kailasa. Lord Siva told her that it was Ravana's act and he simply pressed Kailasa with his thumb. With that Ravana strucked between Kailasa Parvatha and Pridhvi and experienced intolerable pain and shouted very hilariously. This sort of sound is described in Sanskrit as Ravanahh. Thus he got the name.

Ravana took his Lanka from Kubera, and Kubera left to Gandhamadhana Parvatha with his Yaksha and Kinnera Ganas.

Now (2 Yugas Later)

Lemoria: As per the existing geographies, Ravana's lanka was in Atlantic Ocean west to North America. The island/lanka was called "Lemoria" which was submerged into Atlantic after few years of Ravana's era.

Mayan Race & Civilisation: As earlier said, the Swarna Lanka was built for Sumali by Mayasur. Maya ruled the land around Mexico in North America. That is the reason why we heard about the race and civilisation called "Maaya" in North America. Even this is also the reason for Mexicans even now celebrating RamSita festival.

More interestingly, if you observe the names of Ravana's grandfathers:

Sumali/Sumalaya: In Africa, right now we have a nation called "Somalia" whose name was derived from the name of Sumali/Sumalaya. Observe the physical characteristics of humans in these countries: Black, above 6 foot, very strong physic etc. Apart from this we have very dangerous Pirates there as of now. Also see the conditions in these countries.

Mali: Now we have "Mali", an African nation.

About Sri Lanka – It is treated as actual Ravana's lanka in contemporary scenario. But it might not be as per the above research. Also Ravana's lanka was a Swarna Lanka which was ruled by Vibheeshana after Ravana's era. Then why it is treated as Ravana's lanka?

The reason could be Ravana placed Sita in this Island, thus it got the name like Sita Lanka which later became Sri Lanka. Sita is treated as ansh of Goddess Lakshmi who is also referred as "Sri". Thus Sita Lanka might have become Sri Lanka.

Andaman: The reason behind this Island's name is that Lord Hanuman took some rest over this Island while travelling to Sita Lanka. The Bushman in this Island worship Hanuman as their god thus it was called Handaman which later became Andaman.

Syria and Around: After the Ravan'asura's era, the left out from the race "Asura" travelled towards Middle East and then to East. Many of them settled in Middle East and formed "Asiria" which now comprises Syria and the Middle East countries. The race thus travelled to East formed Indus/Sindhu valley civilisation. That is the reason why historians found the same script in Mayan race and Mexico what we found in Sindhu civilisation.

@Anjaani-thank you for posting the story it is pretty intresting...

Ravan wasnt a bad guy-he was a brilliant scholar, its just that some times even the greatest men succumb to the more darker side that is in them-that doesnt make him evilSmile

i think beacause Parvati had Lanka created and blessed it,no one was able to even touch it as long as she protected it-till he left Ravan was undefeatable

but in DKDM i wont be surprised if they show the version of Parvati cursing Ravan
