Whatever story we have seen so far gives us the impression that Anjali has taken after her Mom. We have seen how Anjali is self centered and selfish person. Only thinks about her own pain and dont give a damn with whatever happening with rest of the family. I would go to the extent that she is even responsible for her miscarriage.
I see the similar traits in Mrs. Malik as well. So she found out about her Husband's affair. And from the scene it looks like right on her daughter's wedding day. The way she questioned him - how could you do this!!
She was a mature woman with grown up kids.. and still she got so engrossed in her own pain that she forgot about her kids. About her daughter who is ready as bride.. about her son who is apple of her eye and needs his mom. She did not even wait to get Anjali married before start thinking about her own marriage life. The children didnt matter to her. Her, who was asking her unfaithful husband minutes ago how could you do this to me... you did not even think about your children.
She chose to kill herself within minutes, leaving her kids in pain. What a weak and selfish lady!! If anybody is responsible for painful past of Arnav and Anjali, its their own Mother, who chose to abandoned them... It was her why Anjali was left stranded at the alter and not Garima.

I know this aspect will never even be raised as no one is supposed to bad talk about dead... but thats the impression I get about her...

YES!!!!!!!!!! Exactly!!!!!!!!!!! I've made a similar post at https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/iss-pyaar-ko-kya-naam-doon/3212977/anyone-noticed

I'm quoting the last para from the post:
"And what good your mom has done you you? she commited suicide on darling daughter's wedding day only to ruin it!? she was selfish enough to leave you and your lil bro to face in the world alone. She could have been strong to face the situation like Khushi has done!! Accept it, She was too weak to face the realiy of a harsh world!!! You have also proven by your selfish deeds that your are her daughter!!!"

Yes I totally agree-she is being portrayed as an innocent victim but she was also very selfish-any mother who reacts like that without thinking about her children is selfish-yes she is dead now and there is so much emotion that has been shown wrt Anjali and Arnavs memories of her that she is being thought of as all good.
In the neginning when I saw those scenes b/n Arnav and Anjali crying for their mother I felt bad for her-then I didnt know how she dies or even that she took her own life--but how can they gloss over that fact completely?
And the children were not children-they were teenagers-didnt they feel betrayed by both parents?
Thtas why all this extra guilt addition on Garima-SHE caused their death etc--no she did not-they were both too weak.
And Anjali-less said the better-her character has been totally butchered-bears no resemblance to the sister she played in the beginning of the show

Just read your post. yes, its the same personality. selfish to the core. She abandoned her kid just as her Mom had abandoned them.. the kids did not matter to them compared to their husbands..
And here I believe that a woman would always be a mother first.. when it comes to relationships. I always feel that Mother-kid relationship is the strongest bond..

agree with your post.

if you remember, once even daadi said to arnav that your mother was too weak to handle the things and she abandoned you by killing herself... at that time i felt angry towards daadi for forgetting her own duties... but some how what daadi said is true and now anjali is a living replica of her mom... trying to torture everybody around wit her antics... doesn't even have guts to kill herself in one shot like her mom did... both cowards..
