Actor Ranveer Singh has informed the Karnataka High Court that he is willing to submit a revised apology in connection with the ongoing controversy linked to his imitation of Rishab Shetty’s character from Kantara: Chapter 1. The development comes months after the incident drew criticism during a public event.
According to a report by Bar and Bench, the actor’s counsel, Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, informed Justice M Nagaprasanna that a fresh affidavit would be filed. The court was told that Singh has expressed regret and is ready to address concerns raised over the matter.
Reading from the affidavit, Poovayya stated, “I have filed an affidavit of apology. And I have undertaken in that affidavit that I will visit the temple as well. (The affidavit states) on the date of the incident, even for a moment, I did not realise I offended the worshippers of the Daiva. I also want to clarify, I was raised in a Sindhi household in Mumbai and I was not aware of the sensitivities. I, through this affidavit, once again convey my deepest regret, and unconditional apology. I will be visiting the temple of the deity in due course to offer my prayers and express my devotion.”
The complainant, Prashanth Methal, argued that the apology did not reflect genuine remorse. He also claimed that Rishab Shetty had indicated on stage that Singh should refrain from the imitation. Following this, Poovayya told the court that he would engage with the complainant to revise the wording of the affidavit before submitting it again.
Taking note of the submissions, the court adjourned the matter to April 23 for further hearing.
The controversy dates back to November 28 last year during the International Film Festival of India held in Goa. During an on stage segment, Singh attempted to mimic expressions associated with Shetty’s character while praising his performance. The act was repeated more than once, including during a greeting, leading to visible discomfort.
Singh had earlier issued a public apology, stating, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
