Malayalam film director Ranjith granted bail in sexual assault case; Strict conditions imposed

Following his arrest on March 31 in a sexual harassment case, Malayalam film director Ranjith has been granted bail by a magistrate court. The court, led by Judicial First Class Magistrate L Usha, imposed strict conditions as part of the bail.

Ranjith asked to surrender his passport

These conditions include surrendering his passport, remaining within the Ernakulam district, and avoiding the Fort Kochi crime scene, where the film shooting took place. He was also mandated to provide a bond of ?1 lakh and two solvent sureties of the same amount. Additionally, Ranjith must appear before the investigating officer every Monday for the next three months or until the charge sheet is filed.

Ranjith, currently held at Ernakulam Sub Jail, is expected to be released soon. The prosecution opposed the bail, citing a lack of cooperation with the investigation. However, the defence argued that Ranjith had not resisted arrest or custodial interrogation and also mentioned his health condition. Considering his health and the investigation's progress, the court decided to grant bail.

Accusations faced by Ranjith

Filmmaker Ranjith claimed accusations against him were false and he'd prove innocence after being taken into custody in Kochi. His lawyer plans to move a bail plea. Police formed a Special Investigation Team after the actress filed a complaint, verifying allegations before arrest. The case involves alleged sexual assault during a film shoot, with an FIR registered on March 28 based on the actress's statement. Ranjith's team is preparing for a court appearance, maintaining his innocence amidst the allegations.

Actress reports sexual assault

An actress reported that Ranjith attempted sexual assault on a film set, leading to his arrest in the Idukki district. The actress's complaint details Ranjith inviting her to a caravan and attempting assault. Consequently, charges include outraging modesty, sexual assault, wrongful confinement, and obscene gestures.
