I confess, i used to one of those snobs who never watched hindi soaps ..the vanilla characters with their all black or white shades , overdose of melodrama and kitchen politics was not my cup of tea. So as we have finished one year with our wonderful show, i ask myself ...what made me not just stick to, but become so embroiled in the lives of the people who populate IPKKND land ? Why do I have a bad day when they do, and why do i smile the day their day goes well?
And here's what i think worked for me...the reason is that , like you and me , like normal human beings, EVERY character in this drama is deliciously flawed.
Khushi - Yes, she's loyal and cheerful and brave and generous ...but also naive, impatient and immature
Arnav - Strong , intelligent, loyal again, mature...but oh so arrogant , with a HUGE ego to boot, and a vile temper. Carrying a lot of old baggage, feels its him against the world.
Anjali - Caring, understanding,sweet...but one of the most insecure characters seen on screen in a long time ( i know a lot of you say she's dumb...she's not. It's her insecurity that makes her blank out stuff she doesnt WANT to notice. Also, another reason as i mention in Shyam's character below...)
Shyam - Yes, he DOES have a positive ..a BIG one. He is THE most intelligent out of the whole lot of them...he may not be putting it to good use, but you cant deny it. How else has he manipulated two whole families, and his wife, till now ? His flaw...obviously , lust ...both for Khushi as well as wealth.
Mamiji - FIERCELY loyal ( we're seeing it now ), never say die attitude , and very , very smart . Infact, i would go out on a limb here to say that sometimes she is as sharp as Shyam. Flaw...obsessed by wealth and status due to her impoverished background...and maybe also a little insecure because of that . Makes her over compensate.
Mamaji - From whatever little we've seen...acts like a calming influence to his wife's temper , supports his son. Flaw - quite brow beaten !
Aakash - Gentle, loving, loyal to bhai ,,,,but most of the time doesnt have a strong enough back bone to stand up to his mom. esp for his wife.
Payal - Loves her family, willing to sacrifice everything...but oh SUCH A DOORMAT !!
Buaji - Never say die attitude , fiercely loyal ( LOVED the scene where she pulled Shyam by the collar when she saw him watching Khushi )...but has the habit of harping on "hamara khoon". Favoritism happens sometimes.
Garima - Gentle, oh so mother like, loves her family...but again, tends to misunderstand Khushi a lottt.
Babuji - Soft spoken but a strong character...but i got the feeling he some times got bull dozed by buaji .
Naniji - Young at heart , pretty relaxed unlike most soap grandmas...but tends to be very bull headed ...remember lavanya series, her not being ready to forget mamiji's entry into the household even after so many years
Laxmiji - ( yeah, i got her too đ) - CUTE, saves the day for khushi, keeps company when devi maiyya is absent...but goes to places she shouldnt and knocks down pots in front of Shyam đ
When I see this list, and think of these people, I understand why they mean so much to me...they are ALL flawed. Some more, some less, but all are...and THAT"s why we relate to them...because they remind us of who we / our parents /aunts /sisters / uncles / brothers / friends are...in some form, in some quirk...or at least let us believe that people COULD be them. They are more REAL than 1000 other vanilla creatures on other soaps.
And that is why we want Khusi & Arnav to be together
We want Shyam to rot and anjali to find love again
We want aakash to grow a pair and paayal to grow up
Because in our heads , they are us.
