| Two thumbs up for a slam-dunk Durban concert Musical maestros rocked |
| November 29, 2005 By Candice Soobramoney Showtime Promotions, take a well deserved bow! The Bollywood Musical Maestros Concert featuring the dashing Shaan Mukherjee, the flamboyant Kunal Ganjawala, the legendary Anu Malik and the diminutive Amit Sana racked up a storm at the Westridge Park Stadium on Saturday evening. What a spectacular concert! I have never seen Durbanites experience such an awesome and mind-blowing time at a Bollywood show before. Hip, hip, hooray! The well-organised event featured a host of local artists belting out a series of tunes before the India stars took to the stage at a decent 7.30pm. Amit, an Indian Idol finalist, decked in a black leather biker pants and zipped-up matching jacket was as funk-a-delic as it comes. He sang one of my favourite Bolly tracks Sonu Nigam's Kal Ho Na Ho, and proved dynamite does indeed come in small packages. The spectacled Amit, with a healthy pair of lungs for delivering those high and powerful notes, performed energetically and undoubtedly wowed us Durbanites. A good-humoured Kunal, wearing a very loud orange printed shirt over a tight pair of jeans, followed and had patrons eating out of his hand with his boyish charm. His jovial interaction with those seated around the auditorium was lapped-up. His hip-swaying manoeuvres weren't exactly Ricky Martin material, but it evoked all-round cheers. The smashing and popular song Chaana Vey was rendered twice because everyone was elated with it the first time around. I had a jolly laugh at a young petite patron, who was bopping and jiving with her hands flying in the air causing attention to herself, and didn't realise that the price tag on her green India top had popped out of the neckline and was lying flat on her back. Sorry, I'm being nasty . . . My humble apologies. The girls, their mums and their grannies were soon swooning when an attractive and ever-smiling Shaan took to the stage. Wearing white pants and jacket and blue T-shirt he looked like Bollywood material. He sang Kurti Sexy, Just Walk into My Life, One Love and a host more. At the end those girls, their mums and their grannies were left breathless when he danced brief Latino steps, while flicking that ebony cascading hairdo. Anu Malik followed Shaan and he was in his element. He was wearing a strange-fitted black leather pants with a muscle-hugging shirt with a waistcoat and peak cap. Despite his unusual and heavy-footed dance routine he rocked! He sang a medley of non-stop hit after hit. I was enthralled with No Entry and Holi. The audience gave up their concrete seats and boogied on their feet with him. I was surprised, in a humourous way, when one old uncle seated at the front must have thought "never mind" and hobbled on to the stage to dance near Anu. This uncle made himself comfortable in the corner and "sent it" until he was asked and left the stage, waving as he walked down the stairs to his seat like a superstar himself. This proves that the concert was a slam-dunk affair. Two thumbs up! |
