Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men" is a famous statement from historian and moralist John Emerich Edward Dahlberg Acton. Power is simply defined as "the ability to make choices or influence outcomes, which is also power held by a person or group of people in a society". Nowhere in the definition of power does corruption come into question. So where has this idea come from? Who or what events have arisen which make us associate corruption with power?
"Power corrupts." So what exactly does corrupt mean to us? Simply, corrupt means to move from good morals to bad moral. Sometimes, corrupt people don't understand right from wrong. If they do, they choose to do morally wrong behavior anyway.
When someone possesses control and authority over others, they become infected with evil and wicked behavior which begin to dominate and destroy their minds. Like Hitler, Mussolini, Bush, and Saddam Hussein who all desired absolute power. Their "vaulting ambition" led to many unfortunate incidents which resulted in the death of innocent lives. People who believe that absolute power doesn't corrupt absolutely are very mislead. Power is evil unless used appropriately.
When given power, many people use it in selfless manners because power tends to corrupt the people who posses it. These men and women may use their power to pull funds out of their respected countries that they rule in and use it for their personal welfare and finances instead of industrializing and advancing their nation. Others may become arrogant because of their power and not see the suffering of his or hers' own people which they rule. The past and the present has supported Lords Actions statement that "power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" and can be clarified through many books, observations, and personal experiences.
