Duh! Not another love story; haven't we seen it all? Love stories are believed to be the perfect launch vehicle of star sons. So, if Raj Kapoor made Booby to launch his son Rishi, Rajendra Kumar came up with Love Story for his son Kumar Gaurav.
Shot on exotic locales, garnished with ear pleasing songs and served with parental opposition for that added drama our typical Indian prem-kahani is ready to be served.
The film - Dil Jo Bhi Kahey is basically a launch vehicle for Karan Sharma and papa Romesh Sharma off course has got everything it takes to make his son a hero.
Written, Directed and Produced by Ramesh Sharma, the story of Dil Jo Bhi Kahey can be summed up in two lines. The film is about two lovers who hail from different backgrounds facing the cultural conflict that exists between societies, each trying to endorse their own culture.
Sharma takes a calculatedly cautious approach to make a movie that has a little bit of everything. Would it work! Well read on.
Jai Sinha (Karan Sharma) falls in love with Sophie Besson (Annabelle Wallace) while both of them are studying in Stockholm. By the time their college ends - both want to tie knot. Jai's father Shekhar (Amitabh Bachchan) has a liberal view on marriage and approves the relationship with zero hesitation. But Sophie's arrogant father (Malcolm Stoddard) and Jai's orthodox mother Sandhya (Revathy) launch a staunch opposition against the match.
Succumbing to the pressure Jai accepts to marry an Indian girl (Bhumika Chawla), a doctor, chosen by his mother. But she backs out when realizes the real story.
What ensues is a predictable fair. Finally, Jai's friend (Manuj Gulati) and Bhoomika Chawla play an important role in uniting the two lovers.
Dil Jo Bhi Kahey started off well. Nice locations and some humm-able tunes. Half an hour hence, realization begins to sink in.
- You have seen it all. Romesh Sharma's story has no novelty. The screenplay is lackluster and story lacks depth.
- Karan Sharma, despite his 6 feet 5 inch frame lacks the screen presence.
- The lack of chemistry between Karan and Annabelle irks you.
Love Stories are built around lead actors. So if Hrithik carried Kaho Naa Pyar Hai on his muscular shoulders, doesn't means Karan could do the same! Karan isn't Hrithik and Romesh is nowhere near Rakesh Roshan.
Romantic movies always piggyback on the chartbusting music. Shankar - Ehsan - Loy's score in Dil Jo Bhi Kahey, despite the hit title track, leaves much to be desired.
One almost fells sorry for Amitabh Bachchan who tries hard to fill the screen with energy and enthusiasm. He adds the star value to the film. Without him, the film would have gone un-noticed at the box-office. Revathy is adequate as a nagging but doting mother. Bhoomika Chawla gets too few lines. Annabelle is photogenic and gives a commendable performance.
To sum it up - Karan! Dude, Better luck next time.
