Rajasthan Royals have been the team to beat so far: four games, four wins, a net run-rate of +2.055. Campaign starts hardly get better in the IPL. But there's never room to rest and gloat. With three games scheduled in the next nine days, they would want the juggernaut to carry on.

RR have that boy named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but don't let the 15-year-old lord over other high-performers. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been an imperious opening partner, while Dhruv Jurel has effortlessly changed gears at three. Ravi Bishnoi has been cutting through lineups, following the new-ball incision of Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger.

Running into them are Sunrisers Hyderabad, who haven't broken character for the large part. In three out of four games, they have crossed 200, but have suffered from poor bowling, letting Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings chase down 202 and 220 respectively. Against Lucknow Super Giants, their top order was blown away.

But there are still good signs: their Indian spinners Harsh Dubey and Shivang Kumar have stepped up. Heinrich Klaasen, though scratchy, has been among the runs. Abhishek Sharma looks in fine nick. As a team though, they need to click together.

Team Watch

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Injuries/Availability concerns: The wait continues for Pat Cummins, but Brydon Carse should be close to match fitness, having rested out his hand injury in the first two weeks.

Tactics & Matchups: SRH's spin duo has been tidy so far. Together, they have taken nine wickets at 25.44, far better than the pace unit (11 at 44.09). Beyond RR's blistering top three, there's still scope to target their middle order. Both Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer are yet to go big, and how they deal with Dubey-Shivang will make for an interesting matchup. They could also consider bringing in Praful Hinge over one of their veteran Indian seamers.

Probable XII: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Aniket Verma, Salil Arora, Nitish Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Shivang Kumar, Harshal Patel, Eshan Malinga/Brydon Carse, Jaydev Unadkat/Praful Hinge

Rajasthan Royals

Injuries/Availability concerns: With Sam Curran out, RR roped in Dasun Shanaka as his replacement earlier in the tournament. It remains to be seen if he makes it in soon, as his inclusion will bolster their middle-order's hitting power (and give them another bowling option). No other known availability issues.

Tactics & Matchups: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been blowing teams away in the Powerplay (strike rate of 275.86). It would be a steep challenge for SRH, who have conceded at 12.04 an over in the Powerplay so far. But SRH's own top-order is ruthless: they smashed 105/0 in the first six overs in their previous game. How they fare against RR's bowlers, who have taken 12 wickets at 17.25 in the Powerplay, will be a contest worth watching.

Probable XII: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, Donovan Ferreira/Dasun Shanaka, Ravindra Jadeja, Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, Sandeep Sharma, Ravi Bishnoi, Brijesh Sharma

What they said

Everyone loves him. Everyone loves having him around. He likes eating stuff. He likes going out and stuff like that. So we make sure we make that available for him. And he's a 16-year-old kid, 15-year-old, whatever it is. Yeah, doing kiddish things. And he's happy with that. He likes a lot of batting. So we make sure that is presented to him. And if he keeps on batting like that, I think [he'll get] whatever he wants - Riyan Parag on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

In the spotlight - Heinrich Klaasen and Ravi Bishnoi

Heinrich Klaasen is the second-highest run-getter in this IPL. His half-century against KKR has been his best innings of the tournament so far. But the other knocks, while productive, reveal a deeper issue with his batting: 31 off 22, 62 off 41, 39 off 33. SRH have lost all three games. He is not to be blamed for their bowling woes, but he has gone at a strike rate of 140.45 this season which is a significant dip from last season (172.69). He struggled for timing against PBKS in the death overs, and will be looking to score quicker on Monday to give his team those extra 15-20 runs.

Ravi Bishnoi joined his new team, RR, after having his worst-ever season last year. He leaked runs at 10.83 an over and had an average of 44.55. From there, better control over line and length - with a remarkable dip in hit-me balls - has brought those numbers down to 8.76 and 12.66 respectively. The Hyderabad pitch is known for its true pace and bounce, which will present an interesting backdrop to Bishnoi's stock ball: the rapid googly.

Stats and trivia: Sooryavanshi nearing 1000 T20 runs

  • The SRH middle order (Nos. 4-7) has the most runs in the tournament so far: 376. However, they are seventh among all ten teams when it comes to strike rate - 141.35 - which reiterates their inability to kick into a higher gear so far.
  • Head-Abhishek (SRH) and Sooryavanshi-Jaiswal (RR) are No. 2 and No. 3 among the fastest-scoring opening pairs this season: they score at a run rate of 13 and 12.5, respectively, when together in the middle.
  • Sooryavanshi has the chance to equal an ages-old record for fastest to 1000 runs in men's T20s. He is currently on 901 in 22 innings. The record is 23 innings, belonging to Brad Hodge and Shaun Marsh. Hodge was the first ever player to complete 1000 T20 runs. Of the 1061 others to have got 1000 T20 runs since, only Shaun Marsh has reached the landmark in 23 innings too.

Pitch and conditions: Bowlers beware

The Hyderabad home venue, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, is one of the most brutal grounds in the country for bowlers. Pitch number three, where the game will be played, is a flat, mixed-soil deck where spin overs go at a run rate of 10.91. Pace does slightly better, at 9.41, so both teams might predominantly use their fast bowlers. It will also be a hot evening, with the high humidity making the temperature in the low 30s (Celsius) feel like a lot more.

Big picture - New kids on the block take on old guard

Travis Head can be forgiven for thinking 2024 feels forever ago. Back then, he set the IPLrecord for the highest score in a powerplay - 125 for 0 - alongside Abhishek Sharma. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) openers ushered in a new era of big-hitting, unparalleled in IPL cricket at the top of the order. While that particular record still stands, Rajasthan Royals(RR) have their own opening pair knocking on the door of T20 history - the scarcely believable young 'uns, 24-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

SRH know their top-order can still do the job: Travishek made their third 100-plus powerplay score in their previous match, against Punjab Kings. What will worry SRH is how their middle order then fell away, struggling to - at times, even being reluctant to - go for the big shots on a slow deck. They scored 120 for 2 in the first eight overs, then 99 for 4 in the next 12.

Their middle order is now going to face up against RR's all-round bowling attack: if Jofra Archer doesn't get you with his pace, then Purple Cap holder Ravi Bishnoi lies in wait with his spin. To compound matters, SRH's own bowlers looked toothless in the face of a clinical Punjab Kings chase. They have been given three 200-plus totals to defend this season and have pulled it off only once.

RR are at the top of the points table, and SRH at No. 6, because of their contrasting fortunes below No. 3 in their line-ups. SRH will hope that home conditions brings the best out of them.
