Rising with time

The Rising's director Ketan Mehta goes back to his television roots with Time Bomb 9/11. What is Time Bomb 9/11 about?

It's an international political thriller with its epicentre in South Asia. The protagonist, Varun Awasthi, is a special agent with the Agency to Counter Terrorism. Over a span of 24 hours, he tries to outwit the terrorist Osama, who's planning a terrorist attack more grand than 9/11.

Is your villain Osama bin Laden?

The name is globally recognised as a symbol of terror. The character in our story is not the real Osama bin Laden, but a fictional character in a future India.

You claim to have broken many rules with this show. What were they?

One is that it's the era of saas bahu soaps and you can't do a complex political thriller. Two, that you need to keep it simple for the audience. There's nothing simple about this show. Even in terms of form, we've used simultaneous happenings and fast-paced editing.

It looks more like a film than a TV show?

It's been shot like a film, with special effects and larger than life characters. It's also the most expensive show ever produced on Zee.

Why a new show that's only 24 episodes long?

It's like a 25 hour film. After The Rising, I wanted to do something that's compact.

How did you research for the show?

This is fiction based on well known facts. The story evolved out of the feedback from journalist friends and Indian Intelligence officers. The plot evolved from those interactions.

How did you cast the lead actors?

I selected them on the basis of their personae. Rajeev had the look of a hero, and Akash looks evil enough to play Osama's son, Usman.

Kay Kay Menon has played a prime minister earlier on your show?

He did an excellent job in my earlier show Pradhan Mantri. Time Bomb is an extension of that show, so it was appropriate to cast him again.

Do the negative characters on your show smoke?

No, I gave up smoking a while back. But I feel that the ban on smoking onscreen is ridiculous.

Kashish vs Kasshish

After the TRP catfights between assorted saas-bahu serials, it's now the turn of the eleven o'clocker family showdowns.

On Star Plus' Kahiin To Hoga, lead protagonist Kashish (will someone please fix her messy hair?) seems to keep the struggle going. Struggle to keep a husband alive, that is. (They should rename her Koshish.) And Sujal's plastic surgeon seems to have screwed up bigtime.

Apart from tinkering with lover boy's bone structure, he's also implanted the new Sujal with a brand new tapori voice.

The usually confused storyline seems to be taking an interestingly familiar turn… a lawaris son demolishes errant dad's biz empire (Trishul's Vijay should land up at Balaji's office with his trademark ambulance).

At the same time on Zee we have a new entrant called Kasshish. In this one, the lady (no, she isn't called Kashish) doesn't have a dead hubby, he only looks it.

Why would two utterly gorgeous ladies like Simone Singh and Kitu Gidwani crave a stone-agey dud like Ayub Khan? The meatball better be a rocket in bed. Cheating on the spouse makes for great TV entertainment. The challenge is to keep the eyeballs glued after the 13th episode is done.

Sujal O Sujal!

I just cannot figure why Time Bomb 9/11 (Zee) doesn't send the pulse racing.

The weekly serial's loaded with all it takes for a high action drama to grab the imagination: a rapid pace, gripping action sequences, a very, very real plot (am sure Osamabhai has his own solution for the Kashmir dispute). And it's a clone of Keifer Sutherland's 24, which rocked the US.

So what's the problem? I think it's gotta to do with a casting blooper. No, I ain't speaking of the actor who rather cutely plays Osama (an uncanny resemblance to the benign gent who mans the cash counter at Gulshan E Iran near Crawford Market — don't miss the great mutton biryani), it's got to do with Rajiv Khandelwal.

The TV actor is best at playing the chocolate hero… a self destructive, brooding romantic type. This weepy king of love is most unconvincing playing a hard-edged secret agent.

Think of Rajesh Khanna in Mission Impossible. It just doesn't work. Khandelwal walked out on Ekta Kapoor's Kashish saying his Sujal wasn't going anywhere. Well, he's licked that problem with Time Bomb. Varun Awasthi is racing ahead… to explode right in Sujal's chikniya face.

Shah Rukh's lost it

The IIFA awards ceremony on Star Plus was an utterly snoring show. And the fault lies with SRK.

The actor did such an awful job of compering, that suddenly we all wanted Ruby Bhatia back, and that's saying a lot. King Khan's wit seems to have dried up, his legendary energies sapped. Happens, when you drink too much koffee with Karan.

Hottest TV job

Every journo in this country hates Aneesha Baig. The hysterical NDTV reporter gets flown to Amsterdam to hysterically ask Hrithik, Bachchan and Preity, "So what are your plans for tonight?" AND, she gets paid for this. Grrr.

Living alone? Here are some survival mantras

Rashmi Ail | October 20, 2005

Everybody loves the warmth of home and hearth. Sometimes, however, out of choice or compulsion, one has to leave the comfort zone. Better career prospects, study plans, etc, propel you to pack your bags and move to a new city.

The general tendency is to equate living alone with lots of freedom, late nights and a-devil-may-care attitude. Those who do a good job of living alone, though, are not the rudderless kind. They not only know what they want in life but are already on their way to getting it.

Taking the plunge

Shefali Jain, who hails from Jaipur, landed in the city of dreams, Mumbai, to study management and later secure a dream job. She has lived on her own for six years.

"I had to convince my parents to let me leave Jaipur and fend for myself. We were a group of five sharing a two bedroom-hall-kitchen apartment. Food was a major concern. For a month and a half, I survived on bread and butter till we discovered a decent place to have dinner on the way back from college," she says.

For model-singer-actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthy-Kapur walking out of home was an act of rebellion. She reveals," I had completely conflicting views from my parents regarding the way I lead my life and the career choices I made. I come from an academically inclined family, and my parents couldn't accept my entering showbiz. My parents kept threatening me -- either do as we say or get out of the house."

So Suchitra left home in the face of opposition, and took up a paying guest accommodation for two years. "I survived pretty well," she says.

Coping with difficulties

Suchitra shares some of her travails.

"I am petrified of cockroaches and I would sleep with a knife under my pillow. At home if a cockroach sneaks around, you can yell your lungs out and somebody is always there to come to your rescue. But when you are on your own, you jolly well fend for yourself," she says.

"When you are with your parents you take luxuries like a television set, phone, VCR for granted. Till you sleep on the bare floor you do not realise the value of a soft bed, a cushioned existence," she adds.

Passion for acting brought actress Sonali Kulkarni to Bombay. She candidly says, "Hunting for a decent accommodation took me all over Mumbai -- Vikhroli to Dadar, Vile Parle and Bandra. Though my relatives helped me out, I had to interact directly with the estate agents.

"The attitude of neighbours to a single girl living alone is not very encouraging or protective. They are curious. I could always see a few eyebrows raised. At times I would feel lonely, especially when I would see a friend's guy helping her out. But I hate playing the innocent, helpless, vulnerable girl.

"There are other hitches too. If you call for a plumber and he takes three days to fix things you get very irritated," she says.

Strong, smart, independent

According to Pankaj Rokde, a marketing executive in a reputed company, living alone forces you to do everything on your own -- washing utensils, sweeping, swabbing, replenishing the groceries, cooking.

"You learn how to make your salary last the entire month. For instance, you decide whether you should buy a Peter England shirt or an Allen Solly shirt, even if your pocket permits you to buy what you want," he says.

You don't go running to your family for every little thing. "Yes, at times when you are in a dilemma about what career choices you need to make, you do call your parents and talk things out, but the ultimate decision remains yours," says Pankaj.

Tips for living alone

~ VJ Yudi who's been there done that, shares his tips for househunting.

"You realise that everybody is not very nice, you learn to deal with landlord hassles and agent hassles. Be very clear when it comes to money matters. They have hidden messages and you are supposed to crack the code. When you are signing the deal, you need to have a clear picture about factors like the electricity, water supply, etc," he cautions.

~ It is very important to have good friends you can bounce things off. "I have friends who stay with their families and I have acquired family that way. If I fall sick, they send me homemade kichdi," says Yudi.

~ Actor Rajeev Khandelwal (the former Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga), who has lived on his own for the last 10 years, articulates the importance of doing things on your own. "There is nothing around the house I can not do -- be it cleaning, dusting, washing, ironing. I love cooking. Learn to do things yourself," he says.

~ Saving for a rainy day is very important. "If you have a regular source of income, it makes sense to save some for a rainy day, to tide you through rough weather. Money plays a very important role in life at the end of the day," says Rajeev.

~ Get your priorities right. "Never abuse your freedom. One can indulge in small pleasures as long as one has his priorities right. In my field of work, there are certain schedules I need to follow religiously. If I need to go to the gym tomorrow morning, I cannot drink myself silly tonight. One needs to know their limits," he says.

~ Actress Diya Mirza stresses the importance of safely. "Live in a safe locality with very good security systems and nice neighbours," she says.

~ VJ Yudi adds, "Don't leave your family for the heck of it. Your parents' home is a good place to be. Live alone for the right reasons, if it helps you grow as a person, for your career, for better prospects, not because you want to get away from family."

~ Planning is essential. There is the milkman, the newspaperman you will have to attend to, bills to be paid etc.

~ Never cut ties with your family or say bye to your past. Strengthen every relation and offer support in return.

~ Be strong. Don't run away from problems. Face them head on.

Planning to live alone? For all you know, you might surprise yourself and come face to face with a whole new transformed you. You'll discover facets to your personality you never knew existed. It's a great exercise in character building. Don't forget, though, it is also a lot of hard work.

Do you currently live alone?

Was is tough locating a house? How do you manage money every month? Are the neighbours nosy?

What advice do you have for those who are planning to live on their own?

The trials, the tribulations, the bouquets and the brickbats, we want to hear it all. Don't forget to mention your name, age and what you do for a living.

KAY KAY MENON - LIVING THE ROLE

the intense actor reveals his deep dark secrets ...😳 😳 😳 😳

** What has been your most exhilarating acting moment ???
In the play Mahatma vs. Gandhi , when Gandhi (Naseeruddin Shah) is confronted by his son (me).

** What's the biggest risk that you have taken ??
Jumping headfirst from a two-storey building in chhal.

** What's been your most violent act ??
During the shooting of paanch, i was working out a lot. I was on my way to a shoot when my rikshaw driver broke some rule, (rikshaw!! 😕 😕 😕 😕 ) and the cop demanded a bribe. When I began to walk away, he grabbed me by collar and punched me. (didnt he know k yeh PM Anirudh Prakash hai 😆 😆 😆 😆 )

** You played a rocker in paanch. Given a choice, which rock group would you join??
I'd like to be Elvis presley all over again !! (hmmm...😳 😳 😳)

** If you had to choose between films, theatre, and tv....
I'd pick films. There are so many variables involved, nothing is constant : even cloud cover can change your whole schedule. Also, because everything is magnified, you can't cheat as an actor.

** What is the most valueable thing in your wardrobe ??
The lack of skeletons in it. ( that was a pj 😆 😆 😆)

** Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi - What are three things you'd wish for??
(smiles) I had this idea as a kid : if i got such an offer, i'd wish for all my future wishes to come true ! (same answer as mine.....i also wrote this in rajeev's slam book 😳 😳 😳 )

** The co-star you've enjoyed working with ??
Amitabh Bachchan. Because, while rehearsing for Sarkar, i saw the actor and not the star.( Where is my sweeto's name 😭 😭 😭)

** The criticism that has most hurt you??
During my cameo in Naseem, a critic wrote that i looked "famished and malnutritioned." that hit me hard because i was living in poverty and had not eaten for a while.(so sad... 😭 😭 😭 😭..these critics naa...they r jst 😡 😡 😡 😡)

FREUDIAN SNIP

HIT: illusion

WAITING: anxiety

CRAZY: politicians (now he must be knowing better since he plays one 😉 😉 )

VICTORY: subjective

GODFATHER: god and father should be seperate

BOLLYWOOD: Lot of wood that would serve better as furniture than actors.

that is it....hoping next week they have an article on rajeev...😃 😃 😃

Rajat Kapoor
He found it very hard to play the child-abusing uncle in "Monsoon Wedding". But actor-turned-filmmaker Rajat Kapoor still managed a very fine performance.

"I was so scared to play that role. When I saw myself I was petrified. I said, 'What have I done!' I did it because of Naseeruddin Shah and (director) Mira Nair who insisted that I do it," Kapoor told IANS.

He is upbeat right now, with his directorial debut "Raghu Romeo" having been released Friday.
"I don't know how well the film will be liked. It's a small release... about eight prints for Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune and just two prints for Delhi."

Kapoor's unhappiness with Bollywood's way of functioning is manifested in "Raghu Romeo" where the characters are rendered dysfunctional by the conventional formulas of Hindi cinema.

"I'm not really disgusted with commercial cinema or popular television. 'Raghu Romeo' is inspired by a quote I read from Graham Greene many years ago. He was in a hospital and in the next bed a little boy died. The mother was stricken with pain. But all she was articulating in her grief were lines from cheap soap operas. Graham Greene's anecdote was with me for 10 years. That was the triggering point for 'Raghu Romeo'.

"I wrote it in 2000... I feel popular cinema and television have become distanced from reality. We're surrounded by make-believe images." The film has been produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), Jeetendra Sethi and Rajat Kapoor.

"I've been saving money for the last four years to make 'Raghu Romeo'. Fortunately, my acting career allows me to make some money. I managed to save almost Rs.1.3 million-1.4 million."

Naseeruddin Shah is a close friend.

"I remember I had gone visiting his office. He asked me if I was getting sufficient finances to make 'Raghu Romeo' and then gave me Rs.500,000 on the spot. I was so touched."

Talking of the cast, his face lights up. "I had written the protagonist's role for a friend, Vinay Pathak, who was a Channel V veejay. Then while I was working with Vijay Raaz in 'Monsoon Wedding', I began to change my mind.

"There's one scene (in 'Monsoon Wedding') where his character returns home and slowly takes off his clothes. When I saw that sequence I told my wife, 'This is Raghu'.

"I told him whenever I make the film, he's on. After 'Monsoon Wedding' I started getting panic attacks. Would he able to do it? The image of his character in 'Monsoon Wedding' had become so strong in the audiences' mind. But now I can't see anyone doing so much justice to Raghu's character."

Speaking of an incessant flow of songs in the film, Kapoor explains that the protagonist is a product of pop culture.

"Raghu remains a victim of MTV culture. During a play I was doing I heard a backstage boy singing a song by the rapper Shaggy without knowing the words. He had made it into Marathi!

"That's the kind of cross-pollination that's affected our culture. That's the trap Raghu falls into... baseball cap worn backwards and all."
Kapoor is sure "Raghu Romeo" will find its audience.

"When I made the film I saw it as a small endeavour that may not even get released. But the film has grown in stature. It was received with great warmth in India and abroad."

The 'multiplex' phenomenon will help the film.

"Some of these multiplex products are giving the small film a bad name. It's become like the 'India Shining' campaign. All rubbish. But let's look at the brighter side, at least 'Raghu Romeo' gets released because of the multiplexes. But at the end of the day it'll have to compete with 'Lakshya'.

"I'm under no illusion about 'Raghu Romeo'. I'm hoping that by word of mouth it will become popular. If it doesn't, at least too much money wasn't spent on making too many prints.

"But I'm very excited. I get very positive energy coming from the audience. I feel nothing can go wrong. I'm flying... I'm not tense at all."

Next Kapoor is making "Mithya" this year, provided he gets the Rs.15 million it needs. "It's about a very bad actor who wants to make it in Bollywood. Guess who plays the lead? Vijay Raaz, of course!"

On Heels Of Swadharma
Author : Shilpa Banerji

Kay Kay Menon is one of the lucky few who had the courage to answer his true calling. He grew up in Pune, did the usual school and college plays, went on to complete his MBA at Pune University, followed by a five-year stint at climbing the corporate ladder, before chucking it all up for a career in acting.

According to Kay Kay, "One fine day I found my work completely uninteresting and what I wanted to do just stared at me in the face. So I followed the swadharma — my path in life."

After nearly 10 years of being in the profession, Kay Kay's path has been full of interesting episodes: much like the 20-25 odd serials he's acted in. "When I started out, I was doing small cameos and involved in stage activities. The pay was not much but it wasn't hurting since I was doing it out of choice. In a sense, I felt liberated after I started acting."

Prime time television had just taken over the minds of half the population and like many, Kay Kay got a chance to make his foray into the half-hour slots on the small screen. "I had done a cameo in Sayeed Mirza's Naseem five years back and around the same time the TV offers came," says Kay Kay.

Darr, which was aired on Star Plus, was one of the many serials he made an impression with. But with soaps like Shanti and Swabhimaan ruling the TRP's, Kay Kay instead chose to build his repertoire with weekly serials. "I was never in favour of soaps. It's extremely gruelling so doing serials suited my appetite."

Kay Kay got an opportunity to act opposite Naseeruddin Shah in Mahatma vs Gandhi where he played Gandhi's son. He thinks, "That was the highlight of my theatre career. We toured abroad and both audiences as well as critics appreciated my work. It was then all worth it."

Adman and film director Mahesh Mathai saw Kay Kay in one of the performances and called him to audition for a film he was planning to make. What followed was Bhopal Express, a film that toured the festival circuit but got little commerical acclaim.

Kay Kay played a newly-married Union Carbide supervisor and once again, got rave reviews along with co-stars Naseeruddin Shah, Zeenat Aman and Nethra Raghuraman. "After Bhopal Express, I didn't have to introduce myself as an actor. It was good for me."

He has also completed another low-budget film by scriptwriter-turned-filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. "In Paanch I play a negative protaganist. The character is diametrically opposite to what I played in Bhopal Express." Besides this, he is also due to start shooting for Hanslal Mehta's Chhal.

Although both films are due to release later this year, filmmaker Ketan Mehta caught some scenes of Paanch and was suitably impressed. "He convinced me to do Pradhan Mantri because of the different colours in my character."

Playing the Prime Minister of India, Kay Kay says, "is a challenge because I have to play every emotion with dignity. For example, anger has to be channelised and curbed to the right extent." So what is the PM like? "Oh, so far he is a very nice man, a good father, husband.

But a TV script always develops. This guy doesn't come from a political family so it's not like there is a legacy to uphold like Rajiv Gandhi. He comes to power because he has no enemies and people think he's the best bet in the situation. But then he makes his own decisions, of course."

Kay Kay admits he is not a very political person and did not do much in-depth research because "it's not a historical role which would recquire me to study" but with help from M.J. Akbar who conceived the script, he says, "I found out the decorum of how a political family functions."

Does he hope to get much mileage from the role? "I don't like to run, I prefer walking instead," concludes Kay Kay. Yes, Prime Minister.

Donno if it has been posted before😕

Zee TV's Time Bomb has received an extension of 96 episodes and will air thrice a week. Ketan Mehta, who was directing the series, will hand over charge to Gulshan Sachdeva, the man who made Aap Ki Adalat. He says, "The story will now revolve around a Punjabi family and I'm auditioning many people for the lead role."

Meanwhile, Rajeev 'Sujal' Khandelwal is out of the show. "Judging by his popularity, he should have remained. But there were some issues and we did not meet at a common point." Rajeev, who won the MTV Lycra Style Award for the Most Stylish Person on Television (Male), said, "The adrenaline didn't flow and I told Sachdeva then and there."

Lately, the Time Bomb unit threw a surprise party for Rajeev. "It has been great working with Ketan and Deepa. Also, Zee has been kind." What next, Rajeev? "Time Bomb is coming to an end for me, but my sixth sense tells me something exciting is going to happen soon."

Note that the Time Bomb is the same thriller which has received the Delhi HC notice in July this year, issued to producer-director Ketan Mehta, his wife Deepa Sahi and their company Maya Movies on a plea by 20th Century Fox Film Corporation to restrain Zee TV from telecasting Time Bomb teleserial.

At the time of launch Abhijit Saxena, President, Zee TV had said, "Time Bomb is Zee TV's prime property right now. We have left no stone unturned to promote the show and TAM ratings are a clear indicator of our success. Time Bomb has been able to draw viewers away from their daily dose of drama. With the performance of Time Bomb and the slew of new shows lined up in the coming weeks, Zee TV is on its way to the pivotal position that it long deserved."

He was Star's heartthrob with Kahiin To Hoga, but couldn't really set the Zee fires ablaze with Time Bomb.

Now, Rajeev Khandelwal, the nearest one could come to a phenomenon on Indian television, will join the CID team on Sony as ACP Prithviraj.

Will he pull CID to the top of the charts again?

Rajeev will take over the mantle of the senior cop from ACP Pradyuman, played by Shivaji Satam, who will be shown suspended from the police force in the next episode of CID. Pradyuman faces the axe, thanks to his son Nakul (Rahil Azam), who's been charged for being part of an international terrorist group.

Pradyuman decides to side with his son, and this gets him suspended, on technical grounds, says the show's supervising producer Yash Patnaik. Whether Satam will stay off the show for long, or will be brought back, is not known. Satam himself was unavailable for comment. Satam has played ACP for the last eight years, ever since the inception of the show.

Whether Rajeev, who played chocolate hero in KTH and a sleuth in Time Bomb, will enjoy playing the new ACP for a long time, remains to be seen. Stay clued to this space for details.
