Chapter 15
The excitement had reduced to dullness at Royal Institute. The boys were staying for another week before they go back to Ashvamedh. The extension was made in order to complete the quarter and give them time to pack, as the 'test-mission' had belated their arrangements. (I scored 98, incase you're curious.) For the next few days, the junior class was sullen and silent.
"And do you know? I heard that Dr. Desh broke his nose and a moral tooth had come loose."
Well, everyone but Juhi Mathur.
"Tell us Gen," She turned to my bestfriend. "Is it true?"
Gen's eyes gave her a pointed look but spy or not, Juhi Mathur was a daughter of Covert Gossip Column writer. She disregarded the look. "No Juhi. He just bled a little due to my ring." Gen held up her mood ring. The boys were not in the class. They were taken to field for mock duels.
"Oh. So you did--" Juhi started again but was interrupted by another voice.
"Welcome back ladies." Jay Saxena strolled in. "Close your eyes."
I felt like a Dj vu as my teacher instructed us. In the time of 3 months and 27 days (119 days, 17 weeks, 2856 hours, 171,360 minutes and 10,281,600 seconds), I have come to respect and admire my favorite teacher.
"What is the color of my shoes?" He asked us.
"White." The class answered in unison.
"Since I walked in, I have left finger prints in three different places, name them sequentially." He asked without missing a beat.
"Door, table and your watch." The answer wasn't in perfect unison, but it was correct anyways.
"Am I right handed or left?"
"Both." The class answered.
"Ms. Rai?" Mr. Saxena called out. I was the only one in the room who hadn't answered his last question.
"You're right handed." I said.
"Open your eyes." We all did. "Everybody else says I am both handed, how did you come to your conclusion?"
"When you're climbing stairs, you lift your right foot first. You wear your watch on left hand in order to make writing more efficient with right hand and when you handed me the envelope few weeks ago, you handed it with your right hand." I wasn't sure I was right, but when I watched Mr. Saxena's lips twitch to contain a smile, I knew I was right.
"Good job." He said slowly. To say I was proud of being the only student to have received a good job would be an understatement. I felt as if I had achieved my goal, but somewhere in me I knew that this was only the beginning to a greater adventure.
Saturday morning was a complete chaos as I tried to sleep. Hallways were buzzing with gossips and talks as the boys prepared to leave. They were leaving tonight; the jet had already arrived this morning. I wasn't in mood to face anyone though. I had doubted them--still do. I still don't know why they were solving my dad's codes.
I was about to drift off to sleep again when the knock on the door sounded. I groaned and got up to open the door, hoping it wasn't Juhi again. She had knocked thrice that morning, asking for things like Strawberry lotion and flat iron.
"Hey Neesha." Shakshi smiled. "Mr. Saxena asked you to go to the Hall of History."
I sighed and went back to fix my hair in a ponytail. My hair felt static due to bed-hair-day and my bangs tickled against my forehead. I patted it in frustration before heading downstairs.
"Neesh!" I turned to look at Ranveer run down the hallway. I smiled at him.
"Hey Ranveer." He looked a bit nervous and frowned.
"Are you going to the Hall of History?" He asked and I nodded. "Can you bring this book for Panchi. She asked me to but I was running late for a boys meeting and I couldn't say no to her." He scratched his neck and handed me a sticky note.
"Of course I will." I said and saw his face lighten up with a smile. He grinned and pulled me into an unexpected hug.
"Thank you!" He said, all cheered up now and ran away. I shook my head and walked on towards the Hall of History, stuffing the note in my pocket.
"Neesh!" I turned again to find Kush emerging from behind a trophy case. I frowned. He was covered in spider webs and dirt. What one earth was he doing in that dirty passageway?
"Kush!" I said amused. "What--"
"Don't!" He stopped me, holding up his hand and then started rubbing away the dirt and webs from his head and shirt. "I know I look like an idiot. But really, this is all your friend's fault."
"Gen?" I asked, grinning. He sighed heavily and nodded, his eyes still on the webs. He had dropped most of them though. I reached out to ruffle his head, and the dirt spilled off from his hair. I laughed as he sighed again, but laughed with me anyway.
"Yeah! She dared me to find her favorite passageway." He said.
"And you accepted the dare." I asked, curious. He shrugged, a tinge of scarlet spotting on his cheeks.
"And...why would you do that?" I raised my eyebrows at him. He shrugged again and mumbled something that I couldn't quite register. "What?"
"I will get a kiss if I completed the task." He said, a bit louder but still slowly. His face red. That was all I could bear before breaking into a huge grin.
Oh. My. Gosh!
How could I have not seen this? This was so'good! I felt goofy all of a sudden. My best friends! All of them were involved in the Ashvamedh boys' schemas!
"I might be able to help you a little." I said. His face broke into a smile. I leaned into him and whispered slowly. "Find Miss. Anamika!"
"What?" He whined, while I kept up my smile. He pouted. "Why would you do that to me?"
"Sorry Kush, but if you want to be with my best friend, you must probe yourself worthy of her." I smiled.
"But there are like, hundred Anamika portraits and stuff in this school." He said.
"You're exaggerating. There are fifty two." I said. "If you know Gen, it won't be hard." I smiled.
"Fine!" He grumbled. I laughed at his childish nature and turned to walk away again. I think I am late. "Hey Neesh!" He called again and I turned around with a smile. "Thank you." He mouthed and I blined back at him with a nod.
"Mr. Saxena?" I said, letting him know of my presence. He was standing against a window, staring out into the garden where girls practiced ancient martial arts. He turned around just for a second before turning and walking down the hallway, indicating me to follow him. I did. He didn't stop for long as we turned corners and ran into eigth graders. Instead he led me towards the Sublevel One, but instead of stepping inside the lift, he opened the locked door next to it and led me into a dark hallway. He switched on the lights, illuminating a small room with iron blocks. As I stared around, I realized they were safes, some of world's best. He led me to a particular golden one and fingered its door edge.
"Do you know what this is?" He asked me. I nodded and pressed my hand against its cool surface.
"Russian safe used to transport gold in 2007 until banned in 2009 sure to its risky lock." I said. "The lock is uncrackable." I said in awe.
"Good." He said. "It better be." With that, Mr. Saxena, who once asked me to call him Uncle Jay, pushed me inside the safe and banged the door shut before my shocked face. You must be kidding me! "You won't be coming out until you crack that." I heard Mr. Saxena's muffled voice.
"Yup, I definitely admire him." I jumped at the voice and turned to look at Ayush leaning against the metal wall, biting onto a Dairy Milk. His face was masked with shadows inside the closed, dark box. The only light was filtered by tiny laser beams in the ceiling.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, a bit too harsh to be honest.
"Awe, don't be so mean, Princess!" He said. Then he pulled out another Dairy Milk from his pocket. "Want a chocolate?" Yes.
"No." I muttered and he shrugged. I turned away from him and started trying to crack one of the best locks made in the world. I think we were meant to be doing this together, but Ayush just stood there, biting onto his ridiculous redolence of temptation. I ignored him and started to turning the escape wheel and matching it's spikes with the wheel train's. I put my ear near it and waited for a sound of click.
"You know, you look cuter when you're focused." He said, and I tried my best to clench down the blood rising to my cheeks. "I mean, trying to focus."
Ignore him. I told myself, and went back to focus on my lock.
"Why don't you tell me about him?" Ayush said in a low voice after a long silence. I frowned and looked up at him. "Your father." I felt color drain from my face as I turned away, looking at the damned lock again. "You tell me about him, and I will tell you about mine."
"He was on a mission." I felt myself saying as he stepped closer, stuffing the wrapper in his genes. I felt my throat constrict and my voice melt under it's pressure. I bent down and started to turn the lock combination again, waiting for the click. "He never came back."
That was all I needed to say. A moment after the words left my mouth the lock clicked and I pushed the door open. Without glancing at Ayush, I ran down the hallways. I didn't stop until I reached the window by the Hall of History. I let the tears roll down my eyes, waiting for the pain to die. The loss of my father will never be filled. The hole in my heart was evident of his loss. I can never bring myself to forget him, or stop looking for him. I am still hoping, that he will be out there somewhere, waiting for me to find him.
And I will find him.
Alive. Or dead.
"Why now mom?" I asked her. I needed to ask this question. I have wanted to, since the day Ashvamedh boys stepped inside the Royal Instute's Grand Hall. "Why this year?"
"You know the answer Neesh." She whispered. We sat on the couch in her room. Her eyes stared out of the window.
"Is it because of Kartik." My mother turned to me.
"The board members were alerted Neesha. They didn't know what would happen when you're actualy exposed to them outside these walls. We needed you to get to know the people you will be working with once you're out of here."
I nodded. My relationship with Kartik had shaken the board of Royal institute. It was the first time in over a century that a Royal girl had been involved with an outsider. And not even in a covert sense.
"You should go. You might catch him." I frowned at her. She smiled a little, the light rays falling through the window shining in her eyes. "Ayush."
By the time I reached his room, (Or the boys' room) he was already packed, zipping up his bags. There was no one else in sight; everybody was at the gates already. And some were saying goodbyes to their friends.
"You're packed!" I said, because that was all I could say.
"Yup. We were given a deadline." He replied, turning to look at me. I stared at him, waiting for him to tease me, or ask me questions that embarrass me--like he did all semester this year.
"That looks bad." I said, pointing to the bruise he had received from the fight last week. A scar ran right above his eyebrow, brown and menacing. He reached up to touch it with his finger slightly and shrugged.
"It's not that bad. He hits like--"
"What? He hits like girls?" I snapped. Ayush didn't smile. He just whispered as something hung between us.
"Not like the girls I know."
I looked at the boy who had annoyed me, teased me and embarrassed me all semester. The mysterious boy who turned up when I least expected him, and almost in an enigmatic way, looked at me like he knew me--really knew me. He was still arrogant, and stupid. But he was still the guy who had offered me Gems when I was hungry. He had still been my Knight in shining armor. I guess, it wasn't his fault that his armor had been a bit tarnished.
None of us spoke as Ayush hauled the bag over his shoulder, leaning on to it and walking past me towards the door.
"No one to be your annoyance monster now." He chuckled, still walking towards the stairs. "No one to tease, and no one to call you Princess." He continued as he ran down the stairs. I followed him, not daring to say a word. "Sounds like you will be getting back to normal life now."
He stopped and turned to smile at me. I smiled back, not knowing what to say. I shrugged and turned away to walk towards my room. Back to my future, and my normal life'or whatever it is suppose to be.
"Oh, and Neeshu." I turned around, expecting him to tease me or give me one lasting embarrassing moment to remember. But instead, I felt the whole world turn upside down as Ayushman Kashyap gripped my waist and dipped me in the middle of the echoing Dome. He smiled the smile I have come to know as he said, "I always complete what I start."
And before I could register his words, his lips pressed down on me, and my mind swooned.
Then he smiled the smile I have come to know. "I always finish what I start."
"So this is the good bye then?" I asked, pushing back the constriction forming in my throat.
"Come on, Princess." He said. "What could be the odds of that?"
Then he turned around and walked away and I could tell he never looked back--because neither did I.
A warm feeling settled inside me, knowing that I finally knew most of Ayush's truth. Atleast now I knew he wasn't the wrong one, and that he can be trusted.
Because trust is one of those thing that they never teach us here, and knowing you could trust someone is a new lesson in itself.
I have far to go, and this is where it begins.
The end.
Until next Series! 😆
