Chapter 5 - The Buddy Project
After repeatedly pressing the 'snooze' button on her phone, but getting frustrated when the alarm wouldn't stop ringing, Panchi shoved her duvet aside and trudged towards the bathroom.
The mirror showed her a ghastly sight. Bloodshot eyes, hair like a cuckoo's nest and a frown on the otherwise cheerful face.
Was last night not enough? Why must my features constantly remind me of the hours that I spent bawling my eyes out? It's like a hangover, but worse. Actually, they're kinda the same. Both make you look like zombies. But that's not the point right now. HOW do I fix this?
After a shower, she looked much better already. The hair had calmed down and fell around her shoulders instead of sticking out on ends; her eyes had lost some of the redness, and that's all she could do to them.
She got dressed and for the first time, she didn't weigh herself before heading out of her door. It felt good! She had planned to join a dance class, and maintain a diet plan; not necessarily to lose weight, but to be fit. She decided that she didn't care how she looked; people called her fat? Let them. She wasn't going to let herself go through the pain that she'd gone through the previous night again. Ever.
As she stepped inside the gates of Royal Academy, a gust of wind hit her face, making her smile. However, that smile soon changed into a frown when she noticed that her hair had taken the same form from earlier that morning.
'Yo fatso! Having a bad hair day?', one of Ranveer's birdies scathingly remarked. As expected, her posse giggled.
Panchi'd had enough. She smiled sweetly and said bluntly before heading off to class, 'Yeah well, everyone has one of those days. You have them everyday though! Isn't that right?'
The agape faces staring at her let her know that her remark was received and understood by the supposed airheads. Add the word 'hair' into any sentence and it immediately attracts their attention. Oh well, Panchi finally felt great! She'd answered someone back! Sure, it wouldn't help her maintain the 'friendly' image that she'd built for herself, but it'd give her the identity that she'd lost.
'Woah, Moti! What was THAT!?'
And there he was. Of course he'd ask her that. He'd never heard her answer someone back like that. Before she could answer, a new voice interrupted them.
'Hey guys! Good morning! What are we talking about, hmm?'
Ranveer Shergill didn't like Arjun Khanna. He saw how the new guy was looking at Panchi yesterday. And he didn't like that. Not one bit.
'Good morning Arjun! You're still in school? After meeting everyone yesterday, I was sure you'd get yourself transferred to a new school!' Panchi chortled, much to Ranveer's annoyance.
Arjun grinned back, but hadn't failed to notice the redness in Panchi's eyes, which she was conveniently trying to hide. 'Nah, I like it here! Interesting set of people'. He'd started to walk, Panchi falling in step with him.
And just like that, Ranveer remained standing behind, staring confusedly at the retreating backs of the two people that he'd stood next to a few minutes ago.
As they were walking to their first class of the day, Arjun gently and hesitantly asked Panchi 'So, care to explain why your eyes are the colour of tomatoes?'
Panchi quickly stole a glance at Arjun and said 'What do you mean?'
'Panchi. You know very well what I mean. Aankhein laal kyun hai tumhari?'
She tried to avert the question by asking one of her own, 'Are! You didn't tell me where Payal was?'
'Really? That's the best you can come up with?' Arjun rolled his eyes and sighed.
Panchi couldn't help but sigh. 'Arjun, please? I don't wanna talk about it abhi.'
He looked at her and saw the dejected look on her face, the ghost of a smile still there on her lips, her eyes telling an entirely different story.
Panchi kept her gaze steadily on the floor. How had he noticed? Even Ranveer hadn't said a single word about it. There used to be a time when he could tell what was wrong with her by the way she kept her hair. She found herself asking the same question: What had changed?
Arjun walked a bit faster and stopped right in front of her, making Panchi stop in her tracks and look up finally, only to find herself staring in those friendly, warm, amber eyes. She instantly found herself drawing into his intense gaze. His eyes were so different from Ranveer's. The latter's eyes didn't have that magnetic pull; that warmth, that friendliness that the former's did. Ranveer had never once looked at her in a way that was so earnest. Maybe it was because Ranveer had never cared about her as much as she did for him. Sure, he had defended her, been there for her at times, but never in a way that screamed 'friend'. If Panchi didn't know any better, she'd say that Arjun was interested in her. However, she had gotten so used to that look; it was a deeply deploring look; one that she had given Ranveer every time she had been concerned about his well-being; not because he was special, but because she cared for him.
'Panchi, I don't know what has happened to make you merge this facade with your regular personality so subtly that no one even knows the difference between the two, but just know this; whenever you need to talk, about anything, I'm here, okay? And yes, it sounds cheesy and probably clichd, something that you may believe to be surreal and forced, but it isn't. Believe me. Yes, I also know that you have no reason to, but despite that, I ask you to trust me.'
Panchi was left speechless at the genuine and sincere tone Arjun spoke in. She kept looking into his eyes for something that gave him away; something that told her that he was just like everyone else. That he didn't really care for her, she was just another guinea pig to him. However, she couldn't find any signs of betrayal. All she could see was concern and warmth.
She nodded weakly and replied, 'Thanks Arjun, but not right now please? It's not a good time.'
He smiled at her and just shrugged, 'It doesn't have to be right now. Whenever you want to'
Panchi smiled back and realised that they were the only people left in the corridors. The two gradually made their way to Chemistry class and took their seats. Panchi was lost deep in thought going over the conversation that she'd had with Arjun in the corridors.
However, she was surprised with Jaitley's voice rang out loud and clear, quickly snapping her out of her thoughts.
'Yes, it's me and not your chemistry teacher. I understand that there are only a few students to choose from for the new venture that I'm about to embark upon at Royal Academy. Could I have Panchi Roy, Arjun Khanna, Payal Khanna, Kiya Gujral and Keshav Desai in the next classroom please?'
Saying that, he left the room and the students whose names were called out gradually gathered their things and walked out. Upon arriving at the said classroom, Panchi saw Ranveer, Bobby, Piddi, Samar and Juhi already seated and throwing about their reasons as to why Jaitley had called them in particular and no one else.
