Prolouge
The intensity of the silence was killing her. The place reverberated the gloom which was slowly settling in her heart. As she walked down the dimly lit corridor she noticed the stained walls. The floor was covered with dirt and other filth, origins of which she forbade herself to think of. The lights flickered off adding to her dread.
"This way Ma'am."
The sound of her companion startled her. She had completely forgotten about him, preoccupied with the emotions the place invoked in her. The old man moved forward to open the door. She smelled the room before she saw it. The stench pierced her nose and seeped into her being bringing a fresh bout of terror. The stench was so familiar to her, so very dreadfully familiar, the stench of the dead. She closed her eyes once before taking in the sight in front of her.
Hundreds of bodies lay before her underneath white sheets, laid out perfectly, every one of them in a timeless sleep. Her hands shook as she followed her companion across the sea of bodies trying to train her eyes away from them. She hugged herself as she reached the person who had called her. The man, in his forties perhaps, stood hunched over a dead body. He was wearing a uniform, a police officer her mind registered.
"S-s-sir..." her whisper echoed across the room. The man looked up and she felt his piercing gaze on her. She looked on as the man gave her a contemplating look. The suspense of the affairs has driven her close to panic. What was she doing here? Why did he call her? The man hesitantly took out a plastic sample bag from his pocket and indecisively held it towards her. She reached out and took it in her hands. The bag contained a mobile phone covered in blood. The dim light was enough for her to see the blood stained elegantly calligraphic B on the custom made cover. The bag slipped of her hand and fell on to the floor with a clatter.
"...hit and run...Unrecognized vehicle ...there was nothing to do." The policeman fumbled startled by her state. She barely heard the man's words as she moved towards the covered body besides the officer. Her hands shook as she tugged at the side of the sheet. The sheet fell to the floor revealing the body.
"NO.." Her scream reverberated across the room.
