It was the happiest day of his life, the day when his love would reach its destination, when Rachita would become his. He had dreamed of this day for a long time and it had come after a lot of hardships. He was dreaming of a life time of happiness with Rachita but his world, his dreams all came crumbling down in a second when the ghunghat of his dulhan slipped while filling the vermillion. Amaya! He was shocked to the core to see her as his dulhan. He refused to complete the rituals.
Manipulated by the lies of his mother as an obedient son would Rama completed the last ritual forcefully and married Amaya. Spineless and coward' Amaya had called him. He was heartbroken as he lost his love. In her anger and hatred for Rama not standing up for his love Amaya told him the truth about Rachita not being in love with him. It was one more blow for Rama. A man takes in frustrations of the entire world and removes it on only one person he feels he has the rights to remove his frustrations on, his wife. Rama too removed all his frustration on Amaya. He threw her out of his room and accused her of being a fraud, characterless woman and a bad daughter.
He could not accept Amaya and could not forget Rachita. If Rachita did not want to marry him and had broken the marriage he could bear that pain. The pain of Amaya's betrayal was too much to bear. Was she the same Amaya who had promised to bring him and Rachita closer? How could she change in a matter of hours or was she like this from the very beginning? There were thousands of questions but not a single answer. Rama was surrounded by problems and he sought a solution in alcohol.
Amaya used to get more disgusted with Rama when she saw him drunk. Instead of finding solutions of the problems and dealing with them he took the support of a drink. In the past 2 weeks he had come home drunk at least half a dozen times. One night Mantu had brought him home. Mantu was heartbroken too because of Amaya's decision. Mantu took Rama to the room. Rama in his drunken state had only saying the same thing over and over again about Amaya's betrayal. Amaya stood there while Mantu made Rama lie on the bed.
"Kitna gir chuki ho tum Amaya! Dekho iss aadmi ko, jo kabhi sharab ki dukaan ke saamne se nahi guzra wo aaj mujhe sharab ke adde par mila. Tumhari lalach tumhari ghatiya soch aur ghinonay iraado ne iss bhale insaan ko barbaad kar diya hai! Pyar karti ho na Rama se? Pyar ujaadta nahi basaata hai Amaya! Sambhal lo Rama ko iss se pehle ki bahut der ho jaaye. Koi toh rishta imaandari se nibha lo!" Mantu tried to make Amaya understand Rama's state. He was full of hatred for her but Rama was his best friend.
Amaya put her hand up and told Mantu to stop. "Bas haan Mantu bahut hua. Tum hote kaun hoi mujhse ye sab kehne wale? Maana ki tum Rama ke dost ho par pati patni ke beech mein bolne ka tumhe koi haq nahi hai. Rishton mein imaandaari ki baat kar rahe ho na? Tumne socha hai ki tumhaari mangetar ko kaisa lag raha hoga jab wo tumhe mere aage peeche ghoomte dekhti hogi? Arre jao pehle Uma ke saath imandaari nibhao phir mujhe lecture dena. Aur haan aaj ke baad mujhe apna ye chehra mat dikhana. Jao yahan se." Amaya pushed Mantu away. After that day Mantu never came in front of Amaya. It was for the best she thought as she could become vulnerable in front of him.
Amaya now knew Rama's truth. His hatred for her was still the same but she had softened towards him. She no longer used harsh words for him. It was late in the night and Rama had not returned home as yet. Amaya knew what it meant. Rama would come home drunk and he did. Amaya went to support him but he pushed her away. "Door raho humse. Khabardaar agar humein choone ki koshish ki. Phele bikherti ho aur phir sametne ka natak karti ho." Rama yelled at her. The members of Chaubey nivas and Gupta house both saw it. No one felt for Amaya only for Rama whose life she had ruined.
Rama fell on the bed. This was the first time Amaya took care of him. He was saying the same thing about how she single handedly ruined everything. He would never forgive her. He hated her and wished for her to never be happy. "Sab theek ho jaayega Rama. Main jaanti hoon maine sabko dhoka diya hai par main sab theek kar doongi. Ek baar mujhe koi raasta mil jaaye ki main sasuma ko convince kar doon ki wo kabhi bhi Rachi di aur ma ka secret kabhi kisi ko na bataye. Ek baar main apne nanaji ki khoi izzat apni ma ki haveli apne papa ki aakhri nishani sasuma se wapas le loon. Ek baar main apne parivaar ke saath kiye gaye ahr galat ko sahi kar doon phir sab theek ho jaayega. Aapki life mein bhi sab theek ho jaayega. Sab theek ho jaayega." She adjusted Rama's blanket and went to sleep on the floor.
Rama woke up with a terrible hangover. Amaya came and put a glass of lime water on the side table. "Ye kya hai?" "Nimboo pani hai pe lijiye, hangover se chutkara mil jaayega." "Is mein thoda zeher mila do. Hangover se hi nahi tumse aur iss zindagi se chutkara mil jaayega." Rama threw the glass on the floor and it broke to pieces. He went to freshen up. Amaya was picking up the glass pieces. "Ye kya shor hai." Rama screamed at Amaya. Amaya did not respond. She did not want to raise her voice at Rama anymore. She knew her faults and his innocence. Amaya agar tune koi jawab nahi diya aur tu aise hi Rama ke saath acchi rahi toh unhe shaq hoga. Kahin sara sach abahr na aa jaaye aur phir sasuma bhi sabke saamne...'
"Ise shor nahi choodi ki khanak aur payal ki chun chun kehte hain." Amaya yelled back at Rama. "Hum jaante hain ise kya kehte hain par ye khanak aur chun chun tab hoti hai jab mann ko sukoon de. Patni ki chodiyaan aur payal ke awaz pati ki din bhar ki thakaan ko door kar deti hai par wo patni jo pati ki pasand ki ho tumhaari tarah zabardasti ki nahi!" Rama stormed out of the room. Amaya turned and saw Rachita standing at the window. Amaya shut the curtains of her bedroom window. "Ab main Rama ke saamne hi nahi jaoongi. Kam se kam kuch toh problem kam hogi unki."
Rama was at the shop. He decided to go thank Mantu for the few nights he had supported him when he was drunk. He asked the boy to take care of the shop and went to Mantu's home. "Mantu, tum kyun uss Amaya kea age peeche ab bhi ghoomte ho? Usne tumse kaha hai na ki tum use bhool jao. Wo tumse nahi Rama se pyar karti hai. Kyun tum uss bewafa ladki ke liye apni aur meri zindagi tabah kar rahe ho? Wo ladki tumhaare pyar ke layak nahi hai usne kabhi tumse pyar nahi kiya." Mantu and Uma were fighting over Amaya.
Rama took his steps back. He went to the ghat. "Mantu Amaya se pyar karta hai? Iss ladki ne aur kitne dil tode hain? Kya mil gaya use ye sab karke? Itne dil todakar? Wo kehti hai ki wo humse pyar karti hai ye kaisa pyar hai jise poora karne ki aaj tak usne koshish nahi ki. Humari patni banna tha use toh kyun aaj tak usne humse patni hone ka adhikaar nahi maanga? Kyun wo aaj bhi humaare kareeb nahi aayi? Kya chahti hai ye ladki? Humein cheenkar apne parivaar ki saari khushiyaan cheenkar apne parivaar ka ghar cheenkar wo ladki khush nahi hai par ek poori gil kya ban gayi wo itna khush ho gayi thi... Kya hai iss ladki ke dil mein? Kya hai iss ladki ka sach?" Rama was looking at the calm water. A little boy threw a stone in it and ripples formed. Amaya too was creating ripples in Rama's calm mind.
Rama came home drunk. Amaya tried to support him but the same events recurred. He pushed her away. Accused her and insulted her. Rama somehow reached the bedroom. He fell on the bed. Amaya took care of him. "Sab theek ho jaayega. Main jaanti hoon maine sabko dhoka diya hai par main sab theek kar doongi. "Rama, mera haath chodiye! Ye kya kar rahe hain aap?" Rama had tightly caught Amaya's wrist as she got off the bed.
