~:* THE HITCHHIKER *:~
Prologue
All of a sudden, her eyes caught the sight of a distant light. 'Yes!' she thought, extending her arm and putting her thumb out. 'Please stop, please stop...,' she pleaded softly, as the car drew nearer and nearer, the bright light causing her to squint her eyes.
But she had no luck, as the driver paid no attention and drove off speedily. Dirt splashed across her clothes as the car dashed through a large muddy puddle. She swore under her breath as she miserably stared down at her mud-laden clothes.
'Yeah, thank you very much!' she shouted after the car, not as if it would do any good. 'Don't I have enough problems??!! These were my only clothes! URRRRGH!' she shouted angrily, trembling as the rain showered more rapidly. Her hands felt numb and were beginning to turn purple, but she couldn't let herself become weak. She feebly fell to the ground on her knees, burying her face in her hands.
'Are you okay ma'am?' a voice pierced through the air, causing her to turn her head around so fast that she almost felt she had sprained her neck. She stared at the man sitting comfortably in the car, surprised at how suddenly he had appeared. Shock left her unable to speak or think for a moment. It was almost magical, as if her knight in shining armor had come. The dark shadows made it hard to see his face and she stood up slowly, stepping forwards to convince herself that she was not dreaming. Apprehensively, she opened her mouth to speak.
'Ummm, yes, sorry...I...needed a lift...,' she stammered.
'Where to?' he asked simply, not concerned with who she was and where she had come from. All he could tell was that she needed this one favor, and desperately.
His deep, velvety voice resonated through her brain, the sound of it so strangely harmonious.
'Ur...,' she thought for a moment before deciding where she wanted to go, '...Mumbai,' she answered quickly.
'Get in. I'm going that way too.'
She couldn't stop the smile that crept upon her face. 'Really? Thank you, I really appreciate it,' she said quickly, pulling her backpack off her shoulders and hurriedly slipping into a seat at the back of the black Mercedes car. He started the car again, pushing down on the gas pedal with his foot, yet did not even say a single word to her. It was only when she was seated in the car that she managed to calm her breathing and get a good look at him. He was unlike any other man she had seen in her life, she thought as she sat comfortably in the warm leather seats. His face was perfectly sculpted, his jaw set in a perfect line, he had luxurious brown hair falling beautifully across his forehead, and he had the most striking chocolate brown eyes. Realizing what she was doing, she shook her head, cursing and giving herself a mental kick for her unabashed thoughts. Yet, it did not stop her from glancing at him every now and then.
As she looked out of the window, an odd inkling of fear spread through her body, causing her to shudder. She asked herself whether she was doing the right thing by getting a lift from a strange man that she did not know.
'What if he tries something with me?' she thought suddenly and then shook her head slightly. He did not seem like that kind of person. And he was the first person to help her, when she needed it the most, she sighed. She closed her eyes and sent a short prayer up to God before letting her head fall back on the headrest, her body melting against the comfort of the seats.
She did not notice the two eyes that were watching her intently from the rear-view mirror.
