The Mending of Broken Hearts

Twinkle plopped herself in front of the vanity, with a wide grin plastered on her face. She picked up the silver earring and placed it delicately in her ear. The red and golden bangles clinked as her hands moved to ornate her.

Today was a special day for Twinkle.

It was the day that she had finally decided to wholly accept her marital relationship with Kunj. She wanted to give him all the rights that he deserves as a husband. The respect, love and companionship that he was longing from her for the past three months, will now finally be granted.

Twinkle blushed thinking about the arrangements that she had made for tonight. She hoped that he would receive it in the same romantic manner that she had set it all up in.

Closing the lid on her lipstick, Twinkle got up to inspect herself.

She's not the type of person to wear sarees. She finds them too tedious to handle and the long pallu that drapes over her shoulder wears her down. However, she made an exception for this case as Kunj had gifted her this particular saree.

Twinkle still remembered how that exchange had played out.

Kunj had come home late that night. While everyone else had eaten and gone to sleep, Twinkle had decided to stay up and wait for him to arrive. She didn't mind at first as she had video chatted with her mom while eating her dinner. It was pleasant talking to her mother after so long. With all the new responsibilities that had arrived after their marriage, Twinkle hadn't been able to take some time out for herself let alone her mother. Thus, to be able to utilize that time to catch up with some plain old girl talk was greatly comforting.

It had been 11:43 p.m. when Kunj had arrived home. Twinkle remembered as that was the first thing she saw when she had jolted awake.

Kunj had loosened his red tie and tiredly put his belongings onto the dining table. Twinkled had felt bad for him, seeing his disheveled state. After they had gotten married, Kunj had busied himself by finally joining his father's business. He was handed over a new segment of the Sarna empire which entailed him handling all contracts concerning marriages. Every day Kunj will come home late and exhausted, barely having time to even smile at Twinkle.

She hadn't been able to remember when was the last time that they had even sat together. Twinkle had felt a pang of hurt as she had come to that particular realization that night.

Getting up, she had poured a glass of water and had offered it to her husband. Kunj, who had been standing with one hand on the back of the velvety cream chair and the other pinching the bridge of his nose, had been surprised to see Twinkle up so late.

"Twinkle, why aren't you asleep yet?" He had asked, not wanting her to stay up for him.

"Well, you didn't come home." Twinkle had answered, looking down as Kunj took the offered glass.

"That doesn't mean you have to stay up. You should go to sleep if I ever get late like this. Don't do it again." He had requested before gulping down the entire glass of water.

Miffed by his response, Twinkle had scolded him. "I stayed up because I wanted to, not because I had to."

She had stomped her way to the kitchen to get Kunj his dinner. She had been unable to believe that Kunj would respond so rudely to her. So what if she had stayed up for him. It wasn't a crime. Plus, if she hadn't stayed up then who would have served him dinner. He sure as hell wouldn't have gotten it for himself. Looking at his tired state, she had feared he might fall asleep standing right there.

Putting away the extra food, she had taken the plate back to the dining table and had found Kunj sitting in one of the chairs, sleeping.

Her shoulders had slumped as she took in how hard-working he had become. She had put the plate before him and sat beside him. His arms had been crossed and his head had been resting upon them. The deep slumber that he had fallen into had given a serene aura to him. Twinkle had been unable to stop herself from forming a small smile on her lips.

Wanting to capture the moment forever, she had clicked a picture. It was a secret that she had wanted to keep all to herself. She had gently caressed her fingers through his hair. There was no particular reason for her to do so. She had simply wanted to.

It was at that moment that he had woken up. He had been taken aback by Twinkle's gesture. Feeling the awkwardness that had spread between them, she had taken her hand back and looked away. Seeing the plate full of food, she had remembered what her original purpose was.

Sliding the plate forward, Twinkle had urged Kunj on.

"Eat before it gets cold."

"Twinkle, I'm not in the mood." He had mumbled.

"What do you mean you're not in the mood?" Kunj leaned his head back on the chair and closed his eyes. "Say that you don't have the energy to eat." She had broken off a piece of roti and dipped it in some dal. "Here," She had extended her morsel filled hand.

Kunj had opened his eyes and looked at her. There was no point in him showing attitude as he knew he was starving. So instead, he had obeyed his wife and accepted the morsel with an open mouth.

Twinkle had chatted the entire duration of the dinner. She knew Kunj had been glad to be able to just sit there and listen without contributing much to the conversation. Although he hadn't said it himself, the softness of his eyes had delivered the message.

When he had finished eating, Twinkle had taken the dirty dishes to the kitchen to clean them up. She had sent Kunj to go upstairs to sleep as he would undoubtedly have another long day at work the next day.

Drying the remaining water droplets off her hands with her dupatta, Twinkle had entered their room. Kunj had just gotten out of the bathroom buttoning the soft white kurta he had chosen to wear for the night. Twinkle had opened their cupboard to take out her own night clothes. She was intrigued by a paper bag that was placed there. It hadn't been there earlier in the day. She had assumed Kunj must have brought it and had thought no further of it.

When she had gotten out of the bathroom, Kunj had settled himself against the bed. However, rather than sleeping like she had told him to, he was busy on the phone. Not impressed, Twinkle too got under the covers. Before she could turn off the light on her side, Kunj had stopped her.

Confused, she had scrunched her eyebrows at him.

"I got you something." Kunj had spoken hesitantly.

"For me?" Twinkle had straightened up, excited to see the surprise. "What is it?"

Kunj had plopped the same brown paper bag that she had seen in the cupboard. Opening it, she had been revealed to a marvelous piece of cloth. She had taken it out of the parcel and saw that it had been a saree. The blouse was made of a royal blue satin material with a golden design embroidered into the elbow. However, the saree itself had been red with a blue and gold embroidery done along the edges. As for the petticoat, it was the same shade of gold as the embroidery done on the elbow. Meanwhile the fall on the petticoat had a gold heavy design on a backdrop of a royal blue.

It was undoubtedly gorgeous and she had been impressed by Kunj's choice. But she was not the type of girl to wear sarees. Not only was it too difficult for her to carry but she wasn't sure if she could pull it off. She simply didn't have the body for it.

Kunj who had been looking intently at her, had perceived her reaction.

"You don't like it?" He had asked.

"No I do." Twinkle had said immediately, which looking back now, seemed like a lie.

Kunj must have thought so too as he had pulled the paper bag away from her.

"Kunj, I said I like it." Twinkle had pulled the bag back.

"You're lying." He had retorted, pulling it back.

"No, I'm not." She had asserted, pulling the bag further to herself.

"Yes, you are." He had bit out every word.

With a force Twinkle isn't sure where he had managed to gather from his tired body, Kunj had pulled the bag and Twinkle along with it towards himself. She had let out a small yelp as her body had collided with his. Her hair falling over her face, and her body half draped over his, Twinkle's heart beat had started to race. Though they were married, they had never established an intimately physical relationship with one another. But being in a close proximity with him, had made her think otherwise.

She had looked up at Kunj to see him staring at her intently. His lips had twitched as if they had wanted to say something. His hand had raised to remove her hair as they had covered her face. It had lingered near her cheek as if it didn't want to let go. His thumb had caressed the skin while his eyes had shifted down to her lips.

Twinkle had become immediately self-conscious and had tried to avert her attention but couldn't. All she could see was the deep desire burning inside Kunj's eyes. They were screaming for a chance to want her, to claim her, to possess and brand her.

She had licked her lips as her own gaze had shifted to his lips. Looking at the glisten on her plump lips, Kunj's desire had grown. His fingers had dug into her back, his palm had pushed her further into his body. Twinkle had taken a few short breaths as she had begun to feel his craving push through. She had gulped as his head had leaned forward and the hand on her back had glided up and down, scrunching up the fabric of her night suit.

Raising her own hand up to the back of his neck, she had leaned him in. She hadn't been sure if they wanted to move this relationship forward in this direction. But she did knew that if they carried on with this there was no going back. Question was, was she ready to move in that direction.

Having Kunj in her arms, to be able to hear his heart beat so rapidly, to feel the short breaths he was taking, to simply having him so close to her... Twinkle wanted this. She wanted all this and more.

Wanting to fulfill her heart's desire, she had leaned forward to lay her lips against his, when Kunj's phone had rang. Picking it up, he had gotten startled reading the name on the screen. Glancing at Twinkle and then the screen again, he had pushed Twinkle off of himself and gotten out of bed to attend the phone call.

Feeling the cold air envelope her, Twinkle had felt a pang of disappointment. A deep yearning was beginning to ache within her as the loss of him had started to form a great hole.

Twinkle can still remember how that ache had slowly started to manifest itself from a small pinprick to a black hole. She had started to miss Kunj in the little things. Sitting together at breakfast, seeing his smile, going shopping, watching a movie, even making fun of people. His companionship was a thing that she had begun to desire the most.

It was during this time that she had realized that at some point she had already moved on. The sign that she had been looking for had already been recognized by her and long accepted.

Examining herself in the saree that Kunj had gifted her, Twinkle thought she didn't look too bad. She still didn't feel like she could pull it off but with the right amount of confidence, she hoped Kunj wouldn't notice her insecurity.

She blushed as she imagined what Kunj's reaction could be upon seeing her. She laughed to herself shyly as she could already feel the intense stare bearing down on her.

Noticing she was missing one important ornament, Twinkle went to the cupboard to retrieve it. She opened one of the drawers and noticed it was missing. Thinking she might have misplaced it, she began searching through all of them one by one. She became increasingly tensed as she was unable to find the hereditary bangle that Kunj had presented to her on their wedding day.

It was when she opened the bottom drawer, she found all the items that were belonging to their wedding day. Their wedding album, the jewelry, the various suits, they were all stashed here haphazardly by her. She had to clean it out and organize it properly, she noted.

As she began removing the suits that were layered at the top, a red file cropped up amidst them. Twinkle scrunched her eyebrows as she found it strange for a file to be stashed amongst the marriage items. She relieved herself thinking that it might be their marriage certificate and Kunj might have placed it there.

Still, thinking of how her life has been eternally linked to Kunj's because of one mere paper awed her. Wanting to see the validity of their relationship, Twinkle opened the file.

The bridal smile that she had been wearing erased itself.

The validity and assurance that she was searching for from the piece of paper was not available. Rather the piece of information that she has received gives reason for her entire ground to be shaken. The stability for the relationship that she wished to form cannot be possible.

For what she held in her hands were Kunj and her's divorce papers.
