After 6 months:
Long ago, men went to sea, and women waited for them, standing on the edge of the water, scanning the horizon for the tiny ship. Now I wait for him. Each moment that I wait feels like a year, an eternity. Each moment is as slow and transparent as glass. Through each moment I can see infinite moments lined up, waiting. Why has he gone where I cannot follow?"
Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife
She was waiting for him to come back to her for the past six months. 6 months, 180 days and 4320 excruciatingly painful hours of waiting for him to open his eyes. Oh how she missed the warmth of those molten brown eyes so full of love that she could just drown in them. His smile god damn his adoringly cute grin she missed it terribly. She ruffled her fingers through his hair which had grown longer and now covered his forehead. The doctor would be coming soon to check up on him and she was hoping against hope that at least this time he would show signs of improvement. 6 months felt like a life time actually know it was more like the period of the living dead for her because she would truly be alive when he would open his eyes. Swara was busy in arranging flowers on the vase beside Sanskar's bed when she heard someone entering the room. She thought it was the doctor coming in for the regular checkup.
"Sorry doctor I am moving away in a second ..you can..." She stopped in the middle when she saw it was Laksh and not the doctor.
"How dare you step into his room?"
"Please Swara its been 6 months and the only time I get to see Bhai is behind the glass doors. I need to see him properly. I need to feel he is really there and I need to apologise" Laksh pleaded
"Sorry but he is not your Bhai you lost that right and please my husband posses some bad blood so you might get contaminated if you come in close proximity of him" Swara said
"Swara please I was angry at that time I am sorry"
"Do you even know how much you hurt him that day, Laksh. Words are a powerful weapon but if used in the wrong way they can obliterate the other person. That day I saw a broken Sanskar because even after putting his blood and sweat into making your stupid family comfortable all he got in return was an insult against his mother. So please forgive me but I am not going to forgive you until he does. Now get out" She said and pointed at the door
"Swara I need to talk to you please"
"Are you deaf I asked you to leave" She said
"Please it's important it concerns him"
"Okay than we are not going to talk here let's go the hospital caf" She said
"Swara I don't know how to tell you this but its been six months since Bhai's accident and now some of the investors are backing from some of the projects. Bhai had a flair for business that I unfortunately do not posses. In addition to this some of the media houses think we are wasting hospital resources on him. They say since we are rich we can do such things but it portrays a bad image. The doctor already talked to you about this. I think its time we think about other options."
"Wow Mr Laksh Maheswari I am disgusted that I once defended you in front of Sanskar. He was right his family is bat- shit crazy and selfish. Please leave otherwise I wouldn't mind asking the hospital security to throw you out. Don't you and anyone from your family come here. We have had enough of you all"
"Swara I..."
"I said leave" She shouted
Admitting defeat Laksh walked out. She couldn't hold back her tears any longer. She rushed to his room.
"Sanskar I feel so lonely please come back. I need you"
A memory of a similar heart-breaking time assaulted her
"Kal kia hoga Sanskar mujhay daar lag raha hain" She said
"Kal sirf humrai shaadi hogi aur kuch nahi. Yeh Sanskar Maheswari ka wada hain tumse or main apnay waaday mahi todhta"
True to his words against all odds they did get married the next day
She got reminded of the promise he had made to her his last words:
"I am coming back to you I promise"
This was his promise Sanskar Maheswari's promise and she knew he would hold up his end of the bargain. So she wiped her tears and waited.
Sanskar had been right she thought his family was disgusting. Such cheap people they were. Just than Ragini walked into the room.
"Ugh Rags what do you want your idiot husband just left" She said
"I am not here for him I am here for you. Swara you haven't eaten anything since the past three days. I know you are keeping the Nirmala fast but what about your own health. "
"Ragini please we have already had this discussion. I will break my fast tomorrow I promise"
Ragini realized that any further argument would be futile to convince her so she left. Night came and Swara slept on the sofa in Sansakr's room. She woke up before the doctor came. As usual she started talking to Sansakr.
"Good morning Sunny it's beautiful outside I wish you could see it"
"The sun is shining but when will it shine in our lives?" She said with tears in her eyes
"Please wake up" She pleaded and placed her head on his chest
Like always she braced herself for silence but than the unthinkable happened
"Shona... Shona" He croaked his voice was raspy
She looked up and saw him struggling to open his eyes.
"Swara the explosion where am I? Are you okay?" He asked
She must be looking hideous she thought she hadn't taken a bath and was wearing the same clothes since the past three days.
"You look beautiful Shona what happened why are you crying?" He asked
Trust Sansakr to know her so well that he could tell what she was thinking
"Welcome back Sansakr. I am so happy don't you dear leave me again" She hugged him
"Shh it's okay see I am here. I am fine what happened the last thing I remember is our phone call. Why were you driving while crying so careless Swara? Kuch ho jata toh?"
"Aur tum toh chup raho you idiot kaha bhagg rahay thay tum apnay saray waday todh kar or tum na dekh kar bola karun. What was the need of going to the airport that day. Acha hain serves you right you missed the last six months of your life and our anniversary too" She fumed
"I was unconscious for six months I am so sorry Shona you must have been miserable" He said
"Miserable doesn't even come close to what I felt but you are forgiven. I love you Sanskar don't you ever forget that"
"I love you too Shona. We both love each other but just not in the same way but it doesn't matter anymore." He smiled at her
She started feeling dizzy. The last thing she heard was Sanskar's frantic scream.
Doctors and nurses rushed into the room.
"Oh Mr. Maheswari you are up finally" The doctor remarked
"Please my wife just collapsed what's wrong with her?"
"Oh your wife loves you a lot. You are very lucky. Nurse please take the mam to the ward for checking."
"Please check her here. There is another bed in this room. I need to know she is okay" He requested
"Wow Mr. Maheswari both of you are similar I am glad to see so much concern" He said while checking Swara's vitals
"It seems like she fainted due to fatigue she hasn't eaten in the past few days probably fasting for your health. I have given her some nutrients in the IV. She will wake up shortly. I suggest you don't stress yourself and take rest" The doctor advised and left
Sansakr looked at his sleeping wife. She looked so weak and fragile. He noticed that she had lost a lot of weight and had dark circles around her eyes. He cursed himself for putting her through so much pain.
A few hours passed and Swara regained consciousness. She had seen the most beautiful dream Sansakr had woken up. With a jolt she looked at Sanskar sleeping on her bedside his hand entwined with her. If this was a dream she never wanted to wake up. On cue Sansakr woke up she expected him to look at her lovingly but instead she saw anger.
"Pagal ho, stupid ho idiot ho what was the need of starving yourself for my health. What if something had happened?" He shouted
"Nothing happened na we are both fine"
"Tum meri jaan ho Swara agar tumhay kuch ho jata hain toh main pagal ho jata hun. Please take care of yourself I will die if something happens to you"
"Shh Sansakr don't talk about dying these past few months were the toughest when you oscillated between life and death. Let's talk about good things."
"You know that Pooja is coming up and remember I promised you something" He smiled
"What I don't remember"
"Oh ho Swara yay hi kay iss saal hum teeno woh Pooja karay kay chalo iss saal nahi toh next year" He smiled at her naughtily
"Hum teen kon?"
"Main tum aur humraha baal gopal ya baal gopi abb iss saal toh possible nahi toh next year" He teased her
"Kuch sharam karo Sanskar"
"Kia karun Mrs Maheswari you are irresistible"
"I missed you so much don't you dare leave me again"
"Chodna chata hi kon hain"
"Hamesha meray saath raho gay?"
"Hamesa. You are my always Shona"
"Promise me that you will stay with me forever"
"Forever is beyond me Shona but I can promise you a lifetime" He said and hugged her
"Love isn't practical. It isn't meant to be easy. It doesn't appear on command. It doesn't let you fall for whomever you'd like. It surfaces neither at the most opportune moment nor in the most convenient. It'll pair you with someone you might never have expected. It'll put you face to face with endless obstacles. But in the end, none of that will matter because its how you overcome its obstacles that will define your love. It may not be practical but love is ultimately the best thing that will ever happen to you"
