The house was pitch black as she entered. She closed the door behind her with utmost care to avoid making any noise. When she had closed the door she turned around and heaved a sigh of relief. It seemed as though she had dodged a bullet for some magical reason. She slowly raised one foot as she planned on tiptoeing to her bedroom when the lights suddenly went on and her Dadi ma, along with her father, were sitting in the living room. The sight before her made Ragini's breath get stuck in her throat. Her Dadi ma stood up with her eyes shooting daggers, her teeth clenched, she looked like a volcano that was about to rupture. Shekhar didn't know whether to scold Ragini or keep his mother from pouncing on her. He quickly stood up as well, he had to control the situation before his mother completely lost it. "Ragini, do you have any idea what time it is?" he asked. Ragini had a tight grip on the strap of her bag, digging her nails into her palms. Her eyes were nervously wandering as she was too scared to look into her Dad's or Dadi ma's eyes, especially Dadi ma's. "I-I was-" Ragini was fumbling for words. Shekhar saw his mother taking a deep breath, filling her lungs with enough air to spat something out. "It's late. Go to your room. Now. We will talk about this later" He said coldly. Ragini rushed to her room, the tension in the living room could be cut with a knife and she had to get out of there as soon as possible. She went into her bedroom and closed the door behind her. She closed her eyes as she rested the back of her head on the door and took a deep breath. Her heart pounded and her chest heaved rapidly. It had been a long night. "I tried to cover for you" a voice startled Ragini as her eyes shot wide open. "Swara" Ragini whispered. Swara was sitting on the bed "She is hard to fool, you know" Swara continued, referring to Dadi. "What are you still doing awake?" Ragini whispered and took a few steps closer towards her sister. "I had to make sure you'd pass the living room alive!" Swara joked. She stood up and walked up to Ragini and put her hands on Ragini's cheeks and stomach and joked "No cut wounds. No blood. Oh my God, you survived the wrath of Dadi!" Swara put her hands on her cheeks and opened her mouth in mock horror. "Swara" Ragini said in a whispering chuckle while she smacked her sister lightly on her arm. Her sister always knew how to make her laugh, even at times when laughing would be the last thing she'd imagine doing. The sisters were very different, but they got along really well. "Chalo, lets sleep, or Dadi ma might come in here and kill both of us" Swara joked and went to bed. Ragini shook her head at her sister whilst smiling.
It was past 5 am when Laksh arrived at the mansion; he had thrown his suit coat over his shoulder as he walked up the stairs towards his room. "Laksh?" he heard the familiar voice of his mother as he was about to enter his room. He turned to look at her, she was standing a few meters away down the hall. She looked concerned and her eyes showed traces of disappointment. He could read from his mothers expressions what she was thinking, what she wanted to tell him. "Not now mom. I'm tired" he said curtly and went inside his room.
Annapurna hadn't slept all night, not even after Laksh had arrived. As she was helping her husband get ready, he sensed that something was not quite right with his wife this morning. "Annapurna, what's wrong?" he asked his wife calmly but curiously. "I think it's time we find a suitor for Laksh" Annapurna said somewhat nervously. She knew that Laksh would never agree to it, but maybe if he got married he would settle down, quit his bad habits and change the way he was living his life she thought...
