CHAPTER 2
Ragini looked up at the clock. It was 8 pm. Di and Dadaji werent back home yet. Di was such a workaholic. Well she had her own work to do. She took a box of medicines and started placing the medicines in two plates. It was time for Dadi and Nani to take their medicines. She walked down to the hall where they were seated. Both of them were chattering excitedly like little kids. After all it was their dear Ragu's roka the next day. Ragini grew nervous thinking of it. Tomorrow she would take the first step towards becoming Mrs. Maheshwari.
Seeing Dadi and Nani like this no one would even make a guess that these two had been sworn enemies till a few years back thanks to their kids. The beautiful, intelligent, strong-willed middle class Bengali girl Sharmishta Bose had fallen for the kind, soft-hearted rich young Marwari man Shekhar Gadodia. Their parents were against this relationship despite their friendship. While the Gadodias couldnt comply with the idea of a Bengali bahu for their only son, Nani who knew the Gadodias was against the relationship as she feared her daughter would never be accepted. As a result the young couple had eloped. A year later Swara Gadodia was born and around that time Nani had accepted her daughter again. She was the one who brought up Di. Three years later just before her birth Dadi and Dadaji had brought their son back home though still hostile yo their bahu and the little girl who had been brought up like a Bengali. When she was born Dadi took it upon herself to see that she was brought up as a perfect Marwari girl. This led to her partiality for one granddaughter while completely ignoring yhe other. While her father had talen this lightly her mom being unable to see Di's pain had fought for her. Things went haywire. Eventually her parents ended up divorced. Ma had angrily left the city with Swara Di and she who was more attached to her Dadi than anyone else stayed behind with her.
Over the years their anger faded away. She and Di werent together but the sisters grew close through letters. She had started receiving letters from her Di wheb she was 8 years old. Over the next 4 years they grew really close. When 4 years later Ma decided to come back to Kolkata for her new project Swaragini had reunited them. Not that it needed much effort. This time misundestandings cleared they were one happy family. Dadi let go off her prejudice and they were all happy till thatvwretched accident took away her parents. After that Nani came to live with them. The 2 women had bonded over the sorrow of losing their kids.
"Lado...what will happen when you get married and leave?? Kaun rakhega mara khayal?? " Dadi asked.
"Dadi Nani dont cry...I am here...and anyway I will come everyday to give u meds" Ragini said hugging them.
Dadi and Nani laughed.
"Na Lado...we will take care...you be happy there" Dadi replied.
"Haan anyway...there is still time...roka bhi nahi hua and you are thinking of bidaai" Nani reassured Dadi.
They heard the sound of a car. Finally Di was here.
Swara walked in. Her Dida and Dadi looked so happy.Ragini came running and hugged her.
"They liked Ragu" Dida said.
Dadaji blessed her while Dadi said " who wouldnt like my Lado?? I am proud of her"
Dadaji replied " Haan...its double happiness today...we have to be as proud of Swara as of Ragini...she signed a very important deal today...the clients were so impressed."
Dadi and Dida blessed Swara. Then the sisters hugged.
"Congrats di" Ragini said
"Congrats to you Ragu...I am so happy" Swara said with moist eyes.
The roka was to be a quiet affair. Only members of the two families would be present. Dadi and Nani engrossed themselves with the preperations. It was 11 when Ragini forced them to go to bed. As she came into Nani's room Ragini saw her looking atvan album.
It had photos of little Swara and baby Ragini.
"Wow...Nani Di looks so cute...such a big smile" Ragini said.
"Haan...Swara always used to smile full time...but now...My Swara has changed Ragu...sometimes I feel its just my Swara's body...she seems lost...she is always busy...barely talks to us..not at all like her...I am worried" Dida said.
"Dont worry Nani. Its your feeling. Di has so much to handle. Its just that she is busy. She has grown up. Thats all" Ragini comforted her.
Then she came back to her own room. She took out a photo of her Ma.
"I miss you Ma. Nani is right. Something has happened to Di. She is not the Di I used to know.She still loves us but she is distancing herself from us. At first I thought it was the pain of losing you. But no. She was alright even when she came back home forvacation the first time...your first death anniversary. But when she came back from Ahmedabad after graduation she was a changed person. TThis person who never seems happy.Even her smile feels incomplete.Even her relation with me has changed. She loves me a lot. As much as before. And I love her. But I miss my purani Di. I need her now Ma. Its my marriage. I need her. Please do spmething" Ragini said crying.
Unknown to her Swara overheard all this. She ran to her room and closed the door.
"Sorry Ragu. I am so selfish. I was so lost in myself. I felt this was better. I put up walks so that you wouldnt have to know my pain. But I can do anything for you. I promised Ma to take care of you. I am giving you back your Di or what is left of her atleast" Swara told herself.
'Your di is back Ragu" she said.
