Disclaimer: This update is mainly to set the tone of the Maheshwari's as a family. The telly show has a very strict and orthodox family but in my FF the Maheshwaris respect culture and ethics but they is also a lot of parent-child interlaced bonding in the family.

  • Adar is very close and comfortable with his chacha-ji (RP) and not his father
  • San is closer to his badi-ma (AP) but he equally loves and respects his own mother (Su)
  • Pari is very close to (Su) since Su treats Pari like her own daughter. Pari fulfilled the void Uttara created in Su life.
Part 5:
Gadhodhia House, Same Day As Swara left (7 AM):
Rag carefully climbed up the ladder and slipped into the room quietly like cat and was startled to find her mother with a cup of coffee.
Mishty: Gudiya tu kuch jyada hi moti ho gayi ek raat mein, she pointed to the pile of pillows beneath the blanket on Rag bed.
Rag: Ma I am really sorry I din't tell you. But even if I asked you very nicely you wouldn't have given me permission.
Mishty: I thought Shona misused the freedom we gave her but now you are also following her path. Teri shaadi hone waali hai 4 months mein, itni badi ho gayi hai tu, ab mein tumhe sahi galat ka farak kya sikhau. Chal you have your coffee (was about to get up and leave)
Rags: Ma aap bahut personally le rahi ho. I did not mean to lie, I told dida and went. Please lets drink coffee together.

Rag phone rings; Sw informs Rag she reached airport and is ready to board. Rag wishes her sister a happy & safe journey.

Rag: Di ne board kar liya, she will reach her house tomorrow morning.
Mishty's expression became grim at the mention of "her house".
Mishty: Shona kitna badal gayi hai na gudiya. Kitna tomboyish hoti thi, uske boy-cut aur kitna patli dubli hua karti thi (she starts smiling to herself). She killed my innocent cute little Shona to become an arrogant and cold-hearted woman.
Rag: Wrong. Di kitna badal gayi hai yeh aap nahi jaanti. She was so stressed with her work and the journey, upar se aap logon ke insults. She dint sleep or eat properly, kal poore din upset thi. Ab flight mein hi soyegi.
Mishty: Aur woh ladka, who bhi aya hua hai kya uske saath.
Rag: Nah, who akeli aayi hai.
Aur mein tere baba ke opinions ke against nahi ja sakti, why it is important to support your husband you will understand when you get married.
Rag: Maa relax, I understand you are torn between being a wife and mother. In fact I am very thankful ki aapne aur baba ne mujhe di se milne se ya baat karne se kabhi nahi roka. Thanks for letting me make my own choices.

Hugs her mother. Rags takes a quick selfie, whats-apps the pic to Sw and writes "Di, guess what? Ma was concerned about you". Sw replies with a smiley.
Rag: Bas ek smiley. Don't you call this progress?
Sw: Haha. Progress would be when she asks me about you (winks)
Rag: Ever heard of small mercies.
Sw: Hey can you send me La & San phone numbers.
Rag: What a JOKE. You know their entire biography but you are asking me for numbers, itni shareef kab se ho gayi aap.
Sw: Chup kar. Taking Off. Bye

San Office Cabin, Same Day As Swara left (11AM)
San returned to his cabin after going for a visit to the mills with Adar. He needed much more than coffee to keep his day active; he needed a thorough background check on a certain someone. He ordered Kunal (his PA) to dig some dirt on Sw. Kunal came back with some already known facts and some interesting ones:

  • Swara Gadhodhia, was an alumni of Mayo College-Ajmer and IIT-Bombay. These were the only records found under that name.
  • She is now Swara Sebastian Davis, popularly called the Cinderella of Silicon Valley. She now carries dual citizenship as she married an American. Her university sweetheart Sebastian Davis from Stanford, who also happens to be her co-founder at Nasty Gal. Swara and Sebastian (SBD), met as freshmen in Stanford. They started a store on Ebay to sell vintage clothing for some pocket money, but they saw so much potential in it, they dropped out of college, set up Nasty Gal and also got married the same year. The duo built a billion dollar business in less than 4yrs. They have zero controversies and are happily married which is why they are a hot favorite among VCs and investors.
  • Swara's net profit is close to $200 million and has real estate in more than 10 countries. She donates 50% of her income to charities across the world to educate orphans.
This information somehow did not add up well with what Sw parents think of her. A carefree drug addict can NEVER build a billion dollar company. Who better than San would know how much hard work and conviction is required to run an empire. Although San did not have to claw his way up the ladder he knew too well the sacrifices one must make to stay at the top of their game.

He decided to stop characterizing Swara from opinions derived from her family and decided to stick to facts and do some more research. If he even remotely considered getting involved in a business deal with someone San needed to know the strengths & weaknesses of those he is dealing with.

On the Internet he found a lot of her interviews, motivational speeches, business mantras, she had a tech blog too. He was impressed with her professional track record and was surprised how deep the roots of her company spread in the USA clothes retail industry. So he decided her business proposal was worth considering .

San Office Cabin, A week later
San saw an unread e-mail in his inbox written by him to him. He opened the mail with a puzzled face:

"San, how have you been? Guessing from the background checks you are running on me you are interested in my proposal. Sending you some confidential information (files attached) about brands we do business with and I could set up telephonic calls between you and them. I am an impatient woman San, so make a choice fast and delete the mail after you read it."

This mail would usually make San outrageous (for privacy reasons), but his reflexes were acting strange today. He just smiled to himself and almost impulsively replied: "Set up the calls".

He explained Sw proposal to La & Adar. Over the next couple of weeks San and La had extensive conference calls with VPs of very big brands. Surprisingly, Sw was never a part of these calls but both parties were well introduced even before the call. SanLak liked the promise these companies showed in terms of brand building for Maheshwari Textiles and a couple of companies wanted SanLak to visit their office in USA.

Maheshwari Mansion (Almost a month later):
Everybody stared at San in disbelief. His bade-papa and his papa were completely against it while AdarSanLak were okay with the idea of taking Swara's help.
RP: Dekho beta, I agree with her idea of moving from Europe to USA markets and exporting textile to Bangladesh and not China. But can we avoid taking the help of that girl.
San: Lekin papa, Sw hame sirf contacts degi she will not interfere or invest directly in our business. Aisa nahi hai ki hame contract mil chuki hai. Mujhe jake companies ke VPs se milna padega, business proposals present karna padega. Then the companies decide if they want to do business with us or not.
Adar: Aur chacha-ji kab tab hum chote mote brands ke liye raw material export karenge. Jitne bade brands se hum logon ne baat ki hai, who shayad hi hum khud se kabhi approach kar pate.
DP: Lekin jis ladki ka madad tum log lena chahte ho uske maa baap uske khilaaf hai. Aur who apne honewale sambandhi hai.
La: Papa yeh issue hi kyun hai. Swara di iss deals mein bilkul involve bhi nahi hogi. Aur Rag ko problem nahi hai iss baat se toh uske parents ko kyun hoga.

The older generation finally felt like they should leave these choices to their younger generation and they half-heartedly agreed. Now the three brothers had a point to prove to their parents. SanLak were hard on business proposals and Adar was taking care of production.

Since it was decided that San would make the 2week trip to USA and he was getting ready for his VISA interview when his mother came to his room.

Sujatha Maheshwari, might seem like a nobody, but the Maheshwaris know she is the thread that holds the graceful garland called Annapurna Maheshwari together. Su comes from an affluent family and she is more educated than all the Maheshwari's of her generation. But she realized on the first day of her marriage itself that she was going to have to live under the shadows of her husband and his family. AP was well respected in the family but Su was the one who had the real authority & wit to get things done in the house.
When Su had her first child a son, she decided he would not inherit the fate of his father. She wanted San to be a natural leader and an over-achiever. She would never let San settle for the second best in his life. She nurtured power-hungry and cutthroat competitive nature in him. Su realized that in the 3yrs when she was taking care of pre-born Uttara, San has received all the love and affection he never got from his own mother from his badi-ma. So the equation between Su and San was always that of a teacher-disciple or two friends. Su could perfectly understand what's up in San head but seldom his heart.

Su: San aajkal tu decisions dil se leta hai ya dimaag se?
San: Matlab?
Su: How come La got so much interest in our business suddenly?
San: Mom, usko kabhi na kabhi toh yeh sab seekhna hai na.
Su: Haan par abhi hi kyun. I don't get this. His sister-in-law is helping our family. You are doing all the hard work. Lekin tujhe nahi lagta jab credits dene ki baat ayegi saara credit Laksh ko milega?
San: Mom aap itna complicate kyun kar rahi ho?
Su: Mein complicate nahi kar rahi hu. I am telling you my fears. But get one thing clear in your head, you lose focus you lose everything for which you struggled your entire life. I made you a man capable of being a natural heir to this business.
San: Mom, bade papa ne decide kiya ki business mein sambhalunga. Papa aur Adar bhaiyya ko bhi problem nahi hai agar mein business takeover karlu toh. Lekin mujhe problem hai, I want La to get a fair chance to learn the business. Uske baad aap sab log decide karo who should take up the business, let the best man win.
Su: All I am saying is don't let the love for your brothers blind you. You also know it will not the family which decide who will be the next MD of Maheshwari Textiles. The winner of the complex game your papa and bade-papa devised will become the natural heir to our business. So please play with your cards close to your heart San.

Maheshwari Mansion, Day before the journey (2 months after Swara left)
The visa process took 2 weeks time. In San room, he and his badi-ma were doing gup-shup. He was showing her photos and lifestyle in SFO. He laid down his packing checklist and happily delegated the packing to his family who wanted to help him:

  • La was taking care paperwork: passport, visa, business proposals etc
  • Su was packing San clothes
  • Pari babhi was packing some good to have food items and other emergencies
AP: Su yaad hai hum log kitna pack karte the jab yeh aur La hostel ke liye nikal jaate the (and a tear rolled down her eyes)
San: Badi maa, 2weeks. I will be back before you know it.
He hugged her from behind and consoling her when Rag and Mishty came.
Rag: Bhaiyya, packing ho gayi ya help chahiye.
San: I have enough help for packing (he grins) Aao dekho tumhare sasu ma ro rahi hai. Console karo badi-ma ko.
Rag: Bhaiyya ek chota sa favor karoge
San: Bolo.
Mishty: (very uncomfortably) Beta kya tum Shona ko yeh packet dedoge.
Everyone was a little shocked but they did not show it on their faces.
San: Sure.
He takes it from Mishty and silently hands it to his mom to place it in the suitcase.

Mumbai Airport (2 months after Swara left)
San settled comfortably into the seat and adjusted his seat belt. He thanked god as the business class had better leg space than the crammed up domestic flight from Kolkata-Mumbai.
San reeled into how adverse the past two months were for him in terms of work. He felt burdened and manipulated to make all the hard choices especially when extending help to a person who knew his weaknesses more than his strengths. This financial crunch definitely brought the three brothers working together for a common goal of saving Maheshwari Textiles. But his mother's premonition that he is taking his right to being MD of the business too complacently bothered him. He drifted off into a sleep with all these unsettling thoughts. Since it was an early morning flight he reached SFO the same day mid-night as per American time.

San Francisco (Almost mid night)
San collected his baggage and as he walked out the arrivals a cold dry Nov wind welcomed him with a blast on the face. He dint mind chill reaching his bone as he warmed up to a feeling of Sw coming to the airport for picking him up. A slight careless smile crossed his lips and the thought of her. It vanished immediately when he saw a driver holding his placard.
San thought to himself, she sent a driver and then convinced himself may be it's too late, may be she's too busy, may be it's her husband. The driver helped San to a black Land Rover. The driver opened the door and an American lady in a business suit greeted San into the car.

Lady: Hi Sanskar, I am Mindy, I am Sw assistant. She profusely apologizes for not being able to come to the airport personally. She is busy with a product launch and you have an appointment set up with her at 6PM tomorrow.
San: Okay.
Mindy: Rhetorically asks how was your journey San? And here
She hands over a Burberry shopper bag to San. San opens the bag and finds a tan color woolen trench coat and it has a sticky note on the collar. He read the note and it was written by Sw.

" Welcome to my city. Sorry I couldn't come to airport. Hope this will keep you warm and toasty. Cya tomorrow."

Precap: Since the entire next update will be SwaSan in SFO, I needed to squeeze it all of Sanskar's context into this update.

Hi Chitra!!
The update actually clears all the mysteries save the tattoo one!

Swara is married.. then how do we get SwaSan? I am sure you will make that work. 😊

I liked how Sanskaar, Adarsh and Laksh see the business proposal as it is rather than based on some prejudiced opinions.

The email was very cute😳 sneaky girl!

Please continue soon and thanks for the pm.😊
