Disclaimer: This update is mainly to set the tone of the Maheshwari's as a family. The telly show has a very strict and orthodox family but in my FF the Maheshwaris respect culture and ethics but they is also a lot of parent-child interlaced bonding in the family.
Rag phone rings; Sw informs Rag she reached airport and is ready to board. Rag wishes her sister a happy & safe journey.
Rag: Di ne board kar liya, she will reach her house tomorrow morning.
Mishty's expression became grim at the mention of "her house".
Mishty: Shona kitna badal gayi hai na gudiya. Kitna tomboyish hoti thi, uske boy-cut aur kitna patli dubli hua karti thi (she starts smiling to herself). She killed my innocent cute little Shona to become an arrogant and cold-hearted woman.
Rag: Wrong. Di kitna badal gayi hai yeh aap nahi jaanti. She was so stressed with her work and the journey, upar se aap logon ke insults. She dint sleep or eat properly, kal poore din upset thi. Ab flight mein hi soyegi.
Mishty: Aur woh ladka, who bhi aya hua hai kya uske saath.
Rag: Nah, who akeli aayi hai.
Aur mein tere baba ke opinions ke against nahi ja sakti, why it is important to support your husband you will understand when you get married.
Rag: Maa relax, I understand you are torn between being a wife and mother. In fact I am very thankful ki aapne aur baba ne mujhe di se milne se ya baat karne se kabhi nahi roka. Thanks for letting me make my own choices.
Hugs her mother. Rags takes a quick selfie, whats-apps the pic to Sw and writes "Di, guess what? Ma was concerned about you". Sw replies with a smiley.
Rag: Bas ek smiley. Don't you call this progress?
Sw: Haha. Progress would be when she asks me about you (winks)
Rag: Ever heard of small mercies.
Sw: Hey can you send me La & San phone numbers.
Rag: What a JOKE. You know their entire biography but you are asking me for numbers, itni shareef kab se ho gayi aap.
Sw: Chup kar. Taking Off. Bye
San Office Cabin, Same Day As Swara left (11AM)
San returned to his cabin after going for a visit to the mills with Adar. He needed much more than coffee to keep his day active; he needed a thorough background check on a certain someone. He ordered Kunal (his PA) to dig some dirt on Sw. Kunal came back with some already known facts and some interesting ones:
He decided to stop characterizing Swara from opinions derived from her family and decided to stick to facts and do some more research. If he even remotely considered getting involved in a business deal with someone San needed to know the strengths & weaknesses of those he is dealing with.
On the Internet he found a lot of her interviews, motivational speeches, business mantras, she had a tech blog too. He was impressed with her professional track record and was surprised how deep the roots of her company spread in the USA clothes retail industry. So he decided her business proposal was worth considering .
San Office Cabin, A week later
San saw an unread e-mail in his inbox written by him to him. He opened the mail with a puzzled face:
"San, how have you been? Guessing from the background checks you are running on me you are interested in my proposal. Sending you some confidential information (files attached) about brands we do business with and I could set up telephonic calls between you and them. I am an impatient woman San, so make a choice fast and delete the mail after you read it."
This mail would usually make San outrageous (for privacy reasons), but his reflexes were acting strange today. He just smiled to himself and almost impulsively replied: "Set up the calls".
He explained Sw proposal to La & Adar. Over the next couple of weeks San and La had extensive conference calls with VPs of very big brands. Surprisingly, Sw was never a part of these calls but both parties were well introduced even before the call. SanLak liked the promise these companies showed in terms of brand building for Maheshwari Textiles and a couple of companies wanted SanLak to visit their office in USA.
Maheshwari Mansion (Almost a month later):
Everybody stared at San in disbelief. His bade-papa and his papa were completely against it while AdarSanLak were okay with the idea of taking Swara's help.
RP: Dekho beta, I agree with her idea of moving from Europe to USA markets and exporting textile to Bangladesh and not China. But can we avoid taking the help of that girl.
San: Lekin papa, Sw hame sirf contacts degi she will not interfere or invest directly in our business. Aisa nahi hai ki hame contract mil chuki hai. Mujhe jake companies ke VPs se milna padega, business proposals present karna padega. Then the companies decide if they want to do business with us or not.
Adar: Aur chacha-ji kab tab hum chote mote brands ke liye raw material export karenge. Jitne bade brands se hum logon ne baat ki hai, who shayad hi hum khud se kabhi approach kar pate.
DP: Lekin jis ladki ka madad tum log lena chahte ho uske maa baap uske khilaaf hai. Aur who apne honewale sambandhi hai.
La: Papa yeh issue hi kyun hai. Swara di iss deals mein bilkul involve bhi nahi hogi. Aur Rag ko problem nahi hai iss baat se toh uske parents ko kyun hoga.
The older generation finally felt like they should leave these choices to their younger generation and they half-heartedly agreed. Now the three brothers had a point to prove to their parents. SanLak were hard on business proposals and Adar was taking care of production.
Since it was decided that San would make the 2week trip to USA and he was getting ready for his VISA interview when his mother came to his room.
Sujatha Maheshwari, might seem like a nobody, but the Maheshwaris know she is the thread that holds the graceful garland called Annapurna Maheshwari together. Su comes from an affluent family and she is more educated than all the Maheshwari's of her generation. But she realized on the first day of her marriage itself that she was going to have to live under the shadows of her husband and his family. AP was well respected in the family but Su was the one who had the real authority & wit to get things done in the house.
When Su had her first child a son, she decided he would not inherit the fate of his father. She wanted San to be a natural leader and an over-achiever. She would never let San settle for the second best in his life. She nurtured power-hungry and cutthroat competitive nature in him. Su realized that in the 3yrs when she was taking care of pre-born Uttara, San has received all the love and affection he never got from his own mother from his badi-ma. So the equation between Su and San was always that of a teacher-disciple or two friends. Su could perfectly understand what's up in San head but seldom his heart.
Su: San aajkal tu decisions dil se leta hai ya dimaag se?
San: Matlab?
Su: How come La got so much interest in our business suddenly?
San: Mom, usko kabhi na kabhi toh yeh sab seekhna hai na.
Su: Haan par abhi hi kyun. I don't get this. His sister-in-law is helping our family. You are doing all the hard work. Lekin tujhe nahi lagta jab credits dene ki baat ayegi saara credit Laksh ko milega?
San: Mom aap itna complicate kyun kar rahi ho?
Su: Mein complicate nahi kar rahi hu. I am telling you my fears. But get one thing clear in your head, you lose focus you lose everything for which you struggled your entire life. I made you a man capable of being a natural heir to this business.
San: Mom, bade papa ne decide kiya ki business mein sambhalunga. Papa aur Adar bhaiyya ko bhi problem nahi hai agar mein business takeover karlu toh. Lekin mujhe problem hai, I want La to get a fair chance to learn the business. Uske baad aap sab log decide karo who should take up the business, let the best man win.
Su: All I am saying is don't let the love for your brothers blind you. You also know it will not the family which decide who will be the next MD of Maheshwari Textiles. The winner of the complex game your papa and bade-papa devised will become the natural heir to our business. So please play with your cards close to your heart San.
Maheshwari Mansion, Day before the journey (2 months after Swara left)
The visa process took 2 weeks time. In San room, he and his badi-ma were doing gup-shup. He was showing her photos and lifestyle in SFO. He laid down his packing checklist and happily delegated the packing to his family who wanted to help him:
