Part 2b:
Apollo Hospital, Children's Day celebrations: 9AM
It's been 3 days since DP's surgery and AP has not left his side in the ICU even for a second. Dr.Somil came to check up on them and she enquired why he came today instead of Dr.Sh.
Dr.Somil: Arre aaj children's day celebrations ho rahe hai aur unki beti perform kar rahi hai. Aap bhi chaliye, thoda sa change of atmosphere ho jayega.
As they were going towards the function hall Dr.Somil informed her that DP's health has progressed well and they could discharge him sooner if the family agreed to it. AP was taken aback by the melody of the sitar and a voice that could make even the nightingales jealous. They took two empty seats beside Dr.Sh, who seemed so enraptured by the performance of two women, of which AP guessed the girl who was singing was his daughter and the lady who played sitar might be the guru and there was a huge choir of kids. Everyone applauded and the host thanked Ragini Gadhodhia and Sharmistha Gadhodhia for a wonderful performance and Dr.Sh for giving them the pleasure.
Dr.Sh turned to AP who was complimenting his daughter. He introduced his daughter, wife, mother and mother-in-law to everyone. Rags touched AP's feet and AP blessed her.
AP: Beta I should thank you. You have such a God blessed voice; it magically removed all the pain in my heart and made it lighter.
Rag blushes while Dr.Sh says AP-ji aap bahut weak lag rahe hai. Aap ko ghar jaake rest lena chahiye. In fact hum DP ko aaj hi discharge kar sakte hai. Chaliye cabin mein baat karte hai.
Dr.Sh Cabin
Dr.Sh orders food for his family, Dr.Somil and AP. In the meantime he tells AP they could arrange a full time nurse in the Maheshawari house and he or Somil will pay regular visits. While everyone was having breakfast AP gets a call, she asks the entire family to come to Dr.Sh cabin.
Full Maheshwari and Gadhodhia family introduction happens. Everyone notices that San and La go and sit beside Rags and start talking too comfortably with her. Dr.Sh explains that they all met his cabin the other day.
San: Sach mein utna repair bill aaya, or you added an extra zero.
Rag: (fumingly) I sent the correct amount only. Your brother must have added the extra zero and smirks.
La: Bows in front of Rags.
Maheshwari Mansion, next day
The morning routines continued under Su guidance, as AP was busy attending to DP. Everyone was having breakfast when Dr.Sh entered for his routine check-up and followed him behind was Rag. Everyone greeted each other.
Rag: Sujata aunty aapka ghar awesome hai, just like in KJo movies.
Su: Doctor saab aur Rag beta aao nastha karo.
Pari: Woww, Rag tum bhi patient check up karti ho.
Dr.Sh: Who, actually Rag ki gaadi repair pe gayi hai aur usne mujhe personal driver bana diya, sighs.
Rag: Rubbed her eyes in disbelief. Aap breakfast ke liye itne dishes banaate ho, like seriously. Hamare ghar pe health ke naam pe mujhe khana hi nahi dete.
Dr.Sh looked at her disapprovingly while others were laughing at Rags. She looks sheepishly and they both go off to DP's room.
San: Lucky, are you ready for your big day.
Dr.Sh and Rag were about to leave when they bump into San & La in the entrance of the house.
Rag: Why big day? Lucky, haan. Is it your b'day Lucky? she says tauntingly...
San to Dr.Sh: Uncle actually woh Rag ki gaadi hamare wajeh se thuki hai. I am feeling a bit guilty seeing you troubled. Apko problem nahi hai toh my driver will leave her at her college.
DrSh was surprised at this revelation and rejected the offer. But Sans insisted so Dr.Sh finally agreed. San, Laksh and Rags were going in the car to leave Rags at her college first.
La: I am going to start working in my family business and today is my first day.
Rag: Sahi hai shaam ko party hai phir toh.
San: Lucky, tumhe itna nervous hone ki koi zarurat nahi hai. Hum sabko pata tha ki this day had to come but only difference is it happened to be a decision forced upon you. I couldn't tolerate anymore how you became laid back about your future.
Rags: Ohh, so that's why you are lucky. "Like Happy Go Lucky types" The typical rich spoilt brats, you are like a Delhi guy then.
La: (irritatingly) maai tu pls chup hoja.
Rags feels offended, she plugs in her ear-phones and looks at the brothers talk with a WHATEVER look. They reach her college and Rags wishes Lucky all the best in a very affectionate tone.
Rags: Lucky, I will give you an advice which a smart person gave me on my first day as a medical student. Everyone thinks first days are screwed up because we are nervous and we don't have any knowledge. But the real truth is we are fighting the fear of the unknown. Just tell your mind you are not the first person who is doing this, how worse the first guy who ever did what you are doing today must have felt. World is full of people ready to help you but you should let go off your fears so you can absorb everything in full spirit. Bye, good luck once again.
Her words definitely were profound but they had a mysterious calming effect on Lucky. San also had a new found respect for the silly Delhi girl now.
Two months later @Gadhodhia House:
The music, the ambience, the guests and the clamor was too loud and new for the otherwise reserved & low-key Gadhodhias. But they enjoyed it all with broad smiles on the faces since it was their daughter's engagement to the Maheshwari boy, who was a high profile name in the city. The families looked ecstatic with the choices that their children made.
The bride and groom sat in the plush sofa on the exotically decorated stage. Ragini looked drop-dead-gorgeous in a royal blue & beige lehenga. Laksh color matched her in a royal blue sherwani with beige pyjama. The pandit finally arrives and asks for the rings. Rag slips the platinum band onto La finger while La raised the platinum solitaire for the entire room to see and announces: Game Over.
Everyone laughs and Rags slaps him on the shoulder. He too slips the ring onto her finger, the duo give each other a hi-fi and they look into each other eyes deeply.
**Flashback**
Laksh's first day at office was not so bad after all. Adar and San made a genuine effort to keep him comfortable and what really lifted his spirits was the watsapp message from Rag. "All Good" she sent. The chat resumed for so long, they decided to take it offline and have a celebration for successful first day with a dinner. San, La & Rag went for a dinner and the trio seemed to hit-off very well.
Over the course of the next month Rag would visit their house with her dad for checking on DP uncle. Join the family sometimes for breakfast and she began to bond very well. Between Rag & La a lot of dynamics changed. Their watsapp conversations got endless, phone conversations got longer and their weekends got busy with he showing her around Kolkata. Somehow AP started to notice the change in La recently she doubted it was caused by him attending office. She asked San what's cooking and he admitted La and Rag seemed to have developed a liking for each other.
When DP completely recovered, AP casually slipped this into their conversation. He liked the idea of an alliance with the family who has given him back his life, who protected their family from breaking apart. They called Dr.Sh and Mishty the same day; the doctor couple had no honest reason to say NO. They simply had once concern if the Maheshwaris were against Rag doing her doctor practice. AP and DP immediately said they would be proud to have a bahu with such a noble profession.
**Flashback Ends**
Rag was superficially smiling to the guests and for photographs but devoted to her phone. She was texting aggressively and when La noticed he snatched the phone from her:
Rag: (shouts back) Lucky phone wapas do mujhe.
La was surprised at so much anger from Rags and especially over something so simple and on their special day.
La: I know bahut log tumhe aaj wish kar rahe honge but you don't have to reply asap na. Shyaam ko you can do this right, when the function is over.
Rag says with an impatient tone, to cut the crap and give her the phone. They were fiddling with the phone when there was a huge spark at the food counter due to an electric short circuit and the entire lights in the house went off. The curtains around caught fire because of the electric spark
Rags: Lucky, what did you do. Aaj bahut bada kaand hone waala hai.
La: Mainey kya kiya, your phone is the remote to electric short circuit or what.
Everyone rushed to put off the fire and they were able to put off the fire since it was low flame. The head chef dragged a girl into the middle of the room and said iss ladki ne short-circuit karwa diya sab kuch.
The girl was wearing army pants with a black hoodie, Stanford written on it and a burnt wire in her hand. As the head chef was about to pull her hoodie back she fought back. The faces of the Gadhodhia's paled out; They knew today isn't going to end well for them. Dr.Sh broke the silence first with a brash voice that had a remorse undertone to it:
Dr.Sh: Swara, I want you out of my house and out of my sight, abhi issi waqt. I don't want to hear another word from you.
The girl pulled her hoodie to reveal a baby looking face with dewy skin and blood shot eyes. Her hair was jet black too many red highlights tied into a high bun. Swara Gadhodhia, stood there in the middle of the commotion, head held low, and pulled her angry fists into her hoodie pockets.
Rags slapped her forehead and started to run towards her father with tear filled eyes. Mishty walks in a trance towards Swara, holds her chin up and says tu hame aur kitna barbad karegi Swara. She starts crying like the floodgates in her eyes forced themselves open.
Swara: I put my phone on charge. American charger tha... wo voltage...short circuit...she was now gulping her words.
Dadi and Dida notice that the situation is getting out of hand with so many guests around and their new sambandhis, throwing puzzled looks. Dadi ushers all the Maheshwaris to a quieter room. Rag helps her mother and father behind them.
Dida looks at Swara and into her eyes and hugs her grand daughter so tight she was making up for the lost 5yrs between them. The nathan she loved and cared for more than any other member in her family was back.
