Part 2

The sunlight streamed in through the thin white curtains and bathed the entire room in gold. The warmth of the sunlight was like a gentle loved peck on his cold cheek. The chirping of the birds irritated him to the core but the sweet sounds of her anklets and bangles poured honey in his ears. His firm lips curled into a slight smile. He opened his eyes when a few droplets from her long wet tresses fell on him. This is exactly how he had woken up on the first morning after their marriage. She never used the hair dryer. "Mere baal kharab ho jaayenge." She had said in a soft voice the very first time he had told her to use one. Lying in bed he admired her as she dried her hair, applied khol in those doe eyes and filled her parting with a long streak of vermillion. Time had flown by they had got busy with family and work. Where had this man gone who admired his beautiful wife when she used to get ready. He was the luckiest man and she the most under-appreciated woman. She looked at him through the mirror and their eyes met. She gave him her best smile.

"Aap uth gaye." "Tumhe kya lagta hai?" Her smile vanished. Ok now that was a silly question to ask when she saw that he was up but his reaction was intended to be a fun one not serious which was the way she took it. Bahut accha Durga Prasad, yeh shuruat ki hai tumne iss khas din ki.' He scolded himself just the way he did others. She got busy in getting his things ready. She put his slippers in place so that he could get out of bed. She placed his towel in the washroom and had hot water was running. He wanted to say something to her but she did not meet eyes with him. She did not want to anger him on this day. He tried his best to get her out of her sehmi sehmi Annapurna mode but was unable to. He went to the washroom before he could mess up more than he already had. After an hour when he stepped out into the room he saw his pen, watch, wallet and handkerchief everything was in its place. He had the best wife in the entire world but was he the best husband or even a good one?

**

Annapurna and Durga Prasad, came down the stairs dressed in the royal clothes Adarsh and Parineeta had gifted them for their anniversary. The rest of the family was waiting for them like one would for celebrities well they were celebrities of the day. Ram-Sujata wished them and took blessings followed by Adarsh-Parineeta, Sanskar-Swara, Ragini-Lakshya and Uttara. They had just finished the daily pooja when punditjee arrived for the anniversary pooja. Only the nearest and dearest i.e. Gadodia family, Shomi-Dida and Parineeta's family were invited for the pooja. Annapurna was very happy seeing Parineeta act as a bridge between Swaragini and all three daughter-in-laws working together. After the pooja the families had lunch and also the couple was given gifts. Ram-Sujata gave them gold plated idols of Laxmi - Ganpati- Sarawati. Ragini - Lakshya gifted them a show piece. Annapurna and Durga Prasad both appreciated all the gifts especially Swara-Sanskar's gift and the thought behind it. Swara and Sanskar had hand decorated a photo frame and in it framed Annapurna and DP's journey of 25 years.

"Annapurna, aaj raat humein bahar jaana hai." Durga Prasad informed Annapurna as they bid good bye to the guests. Ragini's face fell when she heard that DP was taking Annapurna out on a date. "Bahar? Kahan jana hai jee?" "Business dinner hai." DP said and walked off. Ragini's heart did a little happy dance as Swara's idea was not accepted by DP. Yes, the eves dropping queen had heard Swara'a idea about Annapurna and DP going out for dinner.

**

Annapurna was selecting a sari to wear for the business dinner. Durga Prasad came and closed her cupboard. "Ye kya kar rahe hain jee? Mujhe sari select karni hai. Der ho jaayegi toh aapko accha nahi lagega." DP was hiding something behind his back. Annapurna tried to see what it was. "Ye peeche kya chupa rakha hai jee?" DP gave her 2 gift wrapped boxes. "Ye sari aur gehne peheno." DP! Ghengis Khan would have said it more romantically! Annapurna got ready for the dinner. She was about to cover her head when DP stopped her.

He tucked a red rose in her bun. She was pleasantly shocked by his gesture. "Ye kya kar rahe hain jee?" "Tumhaare joode mein gulab laga raha hoon. Nahi laga sakta?" "Laga sakte hain jee." "Annapurna tumhe apne baalon mein gulab lagana kyun chodi diya?" She looked at him. "Aapko kaise pata ki main baalon mein gulab lagati thi? Aapne toh kabhi kuch kaha nahi." DP realized that he had made many mistakes and this was one of them. "Annapurna, maine kabhi kaha nahi iska matlab ye toh nahi hai ki mujhe pata nahi ki tum apne baalone mein gulab lagati thi. Uss gulab ki khushboo meri saanson ko mere jeevan ko mehekati thi. Tum achi lagti ho aise. Lagaya karo phool baalon mein." "Pehle ki baar aur thi par ab iss uar mein ye sab kahan shobha deta hai jee!" DP looked at her. His silence told her that he would love it if she put a rose in her bun daily. She too smiled in agreement.

"Haye jijji, aap toh ek dum nayi naveli dulhan lag rahi hain!" Sujata's compliment embarrassed Annapurna. Everyone else smiled. DP and Annapurna came out of the house. The driver was waiting for them. DP took the car keys from him. "Main dirve karoonga, tumhaari chutti." Annapurna looked at DP. He had not driven the car in a long time. He opened the passenger side door for her. She was again surprised. DP sat in the driver's seat and started the car. They must have gone a few meters away from the house. "Annapurna, radio on karna." Once again shock was all over her face. "Jee?" "Radio on karo wo kya hai na itne saalon baad drive kar raha hoon aur tumhe pata hai ki mujhe traffic pasand nahi toh local radio par traffic ka haal aata hai na." She shook her head. Such a long explanation only to get her to turn on the radio so she could enjoy her favorite genre songs! Annapurna turned on the radio and giggled. DP looked at her she covered her mouth with her pallu to muffle the giggle. Badle badle mere sarkaar nazar aate hain song was playing. It was a sad song but the words Badle badle mere sarkaar fit perfectly on DP at the moment.

"Ye hum kahan aa gaye hain jee?" Annapurna asked looking at the garden restaurant DP brought her to. "Wo yahin dinner karna hai." DP showed her the way. They walked on a stone path leading to a single table in the middle of a beautiful garden. DP pulled the chair for her. Annapurna was still confused. "Aaj ki raat yahan sirf hum dono honge, ek doosre ke saath ek doosre ke liye." Annapurna had tears in her eyes. "Main jaanta hoon Annapurna main 25 years late ho gaya hoon par kya tum aaj iss raat ko mera saath qubool karogi? Mujh jaise boring aadmi ke saath akele bore toh nahi ho jaaogi na?" Annapurna looked at him with a smile on her lips and tears in her eyes. This was the best anniversary gift he could have given her. This is what she wanted every year, a little of his time which was only hers.

Annapurna and DP enjoyed the dinner. It was a special menu which comprised of her favorite foods which she had given up because he did not like and also a few which they both loved to feast on. They talked about the two of them, everything that was understood but unsaid till now. DP was a rookha sookha kind of a man and to adjust with him Annapurna had given up a lot, one of them being her love for music. Annapurna looked at her plate as the waiter lifted the cloche. There sat on her plate a CD case. She looked at DP. "Ye kya hai jee?" "25 saal tumhaare saath raha hoon, tumhe aur tumhaari pasand ko jaante samajhte hue bhi kabhi tumhe wo na de saka jo tumhe pasand tha... pasand hai. Annapurna, main har saal tumhaare janam din, humaari shaadi ki saal girah, teej tyoharon par tumhe sari aur gehne tohfe mein deta raha par tumhe toh mera waqt chahiye tha aur aisa kuch jo tumhaare dil ke kareeb tha jaise sangeet."

Annapurna opened the wrapper covering the CD case. DP took the CD from her and asked for it to be played. "Annapurna, is CD mein wo 25 gine chune geet hai jo mujhe laga ki tumhe bahut pasand hain. Tumne kabhi gaaye nahi par main tumhe gungunate suna tha. Baccho ko sulaate waqt, humaare kapdo ke toote button seete waqt, ghar ka chota mota kaam karte hue... Zyada toh kuch kar nahi saka itne kam time mein 25 saalon ki bas yehi kuch yaadein kaid ki hain is CD mein." Annapurna's joy knew no bounds. She had never anticipated that this 25th anniversary would be so special.

"Aapka bahut bahu shukriya jee ye sab karne ke liye. Mere liye itna kuch sochne ke liye." SP took her hadn in his. "Annapurna, tumne apna poora jeevan mujhe de diya hai uske muqaable maine toh kuch bhi nahi kiya." "Jee, ye koi competition thodi hai ki maine aapke liye aur aapne mere liye kya aur kitna kliya hai? Bas jo kiya jitna kiya dil se kiya aapne mere liye ye bahut hai." It was time to come clean DP. "Wo Annapurna, ye sab maine akele..." "... nahi kiya, Swara aur Sanskar ne aapki madad ki hai na?" DP looked at her, she knew him so well. He did not need to tell her anything she could read him. "Haan, par tumhe kaise?" "Aisi soch humaare parivaar mein sirf unn dono ki hi ho sakti hai." "Tum unse naraaz ho?" "Nahi, bahut khush hoon ki unhone humaare liye itna socha. Unn dono ke liye inaam banta hai!"

Annapurna made a few calls. DP was confused. They returned home. Annapruna asked the family to get together in the living area. "Ragini-Lakshya, maine aur tumhaare papaji ne socha hai ki tum dono ko honeymoon ke liye world tour par bheja jaaye. 3 mahine sirf tum dono ek doosre ke saath. Khoob enjoy karna!" Ragini was on top of the world on hearing about her and Lakshya's honeymoon. She gave Swara a nasty look as no one thought of sending her and Sanskar for their honeymoon. Swara felt that emotional blow. Sanskar could not believe that his badi ma would do this partiality. Sujata was also excited about Lakshya and Ragini's honeymoon. She went to her room to make a shopping list. Only Annapurna-DP, Swara-Sanskar remained in the living area.

Annapurna blessed both Swara and Sanskar. "Thank you tum dono ka! Aaj tumhaari wajah se mujhe wo mila jisko main pichle 25 saalon se taras rahi thi. Inhone jo mujhe itna khaas tohfa diya hai wo tum dono ke bina mumkin nahi hota. Thank you." Swara Sanskar wished Annapurna and DP good night and came to their room. Annapruna and DP were in their room. DP knew that Annapurna was not partial she loved Sanskar as much as she loved Lakshya but her decision to send one couple for their honeymoon and not both confused him. "Tumne toh kaha ki Swara Sanskar ko inaam milna chahiye. Toh ye sab? Lakshya aur Ragini ko honeymoon package ka gift aur Swara-Sankar ko kuch bhi nahi." Annapurna smiled on hearing DP's question. "Waqt sabse bada tohfa hota hai! Maine Swara aur Sanskar ko yehi diya hai. Honeymoon par jaane se zyaada zaroori hai Swara-sanskar ka yahan rehna. Lakshya-Ragini yahan nahi honge toh inn dono ko waqt milega iss parivaar aur ek doosre ke dilon mein apni jagah banake ka!" DP agreed with Annapurna's decision. "Swara Sanskar ka anniversary gift accha tha par tumhaara return gift uss se bhi accha!"

On their own silver anniversary, the golden couple gifted Swara-Sanskar the gift of time and togetherness, for many more years to come wishing one day on Swara-Sanskar's silver anniversary the next generation would do something special for them like they did for Annpaurna and Durga Prasad.
