In the Singh Mansion, in the dining table:
Mithali is sitting alone as Mrs. D' Souza serves her breakfast. "Where is Yuvraj?", Mithali asks her. "Don't know ma'am. Yuvraj sir is not in his room, since morning. The watchman said he left from home very early in the morning, like around 6 in the morning."
"That early? Hmmm..Okay." Mithali replies and continues with her breakfast, when her phone kept on the table starts ringing. She answers, "Hello! Yes Mrs. Mehra?... Ah no actually I won't be able to make it for the kitty party today... Yeah I know, but then I am feeling a bit unwell today...I am really sorry...Yeah yeah nothing serious...You guys carry on...and have fun! I will call Mrs. Sharma and apologies...Yeah..Bubye."
Mrs. D' Souza has a know it all' smile. It was for the first time in the last ten years, that Mithali was not attending some kitty party. "What are you smiling for?" Mithali asks Mrs. D' Souza sternly and walks from there. Once she is gone Mrs D' Souza to herself, "Finally order in this house is not very far away. Oh lord, our father! Bring back the happiness of this family."
Annie drives her fancy sports car in all might towards The Blue Charm Cafe' in a cosy street of London. The Blue charm cafe had been the favourite hangout place for the Best friends' gang of Annie. Naro, Rathi and Alisha her best friends were already there waiting for Annie, as Rehan Malik the young and dashing hot owner of the cafe and also Annie's Dad's best friend was too had joined this gang, when Annie and Dadi walked into the cafe. The cafe was crowded as usual, and Dadi's presence there kind of seemed odd with it to be filled with all young students, and one old Dadi of course.
"Hey guys!!" said Annie as usual with an extra chirp in her voice, when Rathi made gestures, asking who the old lady there was? "Ohh!! That? Well guys, this is D-A-D-A-D-I (a bit embarrassed) and Dadi, they are my friends, Naro, Rathie and Alisha! Oh and yeah! That's Rehan, Dad's friend and the cafe owner"
"Namaste Bacho!!" Dadi said in her traditional and yet proud voice. The whole gang tried their best to be the most traditional they could be and joined hands, however it did seem a bit odd with all the torn jeans and mini-skirts they wore. However, isn't that what India is all about? A right blend of modernity in its own traditional way! That's exactly where the beauty of India and Indians lie, no matter where they are - The Land of Ironies.
It was one hour past and an awkward silence enveloped at the table in the cafe, with Rehan occasionally trying to build the conversation with Dadi, as at present he was the only person eligible enough to do so, not that he was very old, but at least being older than the other present there. The youngster gang and had somehow managed maintain a bit of good image in front of Dadi, when suddenly Parminder a.k.a Pam enters the cafe with her two sycophants Riya and Zorro. Pam was the snobbish girl in college, but unlike the usual Bollywood drama queens, she was not the vamp kind. Pam was a good at heart girl, just that she preferred to wear the bad girl mask on at times. Like every snob queen, Pam too had her own fan following of which her only two friends were Riya and Zorro. Pam was very close to Annie, Naro, Rathie and Alisha and was the three of them were equally a part of the gang. Among all, Rathie was the one who would go gaga on Pam, while she too enjoyed this attention. More of all Zorro has his hots for Rehan Malik, though Rehan was straight unlike Zorro.
Pam as soon as she entered shocks Dadi, because of her fake British accent and her even skimpier dress with high heels. "hey folk! So wassup!" said Pam and "Wassup! Wassup!" repeats Riya, as her habit goes to follow Pam, quite literally. "Hello Baby!" said Rathie and returns Pam her hug, not realising Dadi's presence. Pam as normal as it could get gives Rathie a peck on his lips! "Baby I missed you so much!" she said as she tightens her hug.
Dadi gets all conscious and is left all the more baffled after seeing this public display of affection, if Pam's skimpy dress was not enough to do the trick. "Haye Rabba!! Mai Mar jawa!! Yeh kya balla hai??" says a shocked and angry Dadi!
Naro suddenly comes to risk, as suddenly gets up to separate Rathie and Pam, and blurts out, "Yeh Balla nahi Dadi, Kela hai...I mean Khel hai!" with a fake amusing smile. Pam and Rathie realise, Dadi's presence and are got back from their world of cupid. "Khel?" asks a confused Dadi! "Haan Dadi Kehl! Nahi Zorro?" says Annie trying to cover up for what Pam and Rathie did. Zorro does not reply, who was by now lost in the dark chocolaty eyes of his Mr. Perfect - Rehan Malik, until Annie gives him one hard punch with her elbow! "Ouch! Haan haan... Khel.. matlab game!" he adds, agreeing to Annie and Naro's lies.
"You know what Dadi! We challenged Pam to act like, who is that... Haan Sonia in Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Ghum!", says Naro. "Sonia? Who Sonia?" asks a even more confused Dadi!
"Eeww!! Sonia? Actually it is not Sonia you dumbhead! It is Pooja... Ewww.. by the way I am not some Pooja and stuff," says a Pam, still not understanding Naro and Annie's plan. "Haan Haan...wahi Pooja! Wow! Pam!! What nice acting man! You are just too natural!" said Annie, trying to cover up, again!
"Oh!! But what nonsense? Someone plays game like that also? And Kya fatte mooh acting... Huh..! This girl does not even know how to walk properly, acting tho is a very far thing! Acting was once day in our days, by Madhubala, Wahidha Rehman!...Wow! What days were those..(recollecting her old times) and here today! People dont even know how to dress! Huh" says an annoyed Dadi. The gang kind of breathes a sigh of relief as for once Dadi fell into their trap, while Pam and Riya were still confused and does not understand what this was all about! Before Pam or Riya could mess it up further, Annie interferes, "Dadi! I think we should take leave now! We had enough Drama! (under her breath).
"What? Drama?" asks a suspicious Dadi. "Drama.. I mean Hindi Serial Drama! Remeber your favourite serial... what is that.. haan Yeh Rishtha Kya Kehlata Hai' will start in sometime?"
"Oh!! Haan! How could I forget! That too today they are gonna show, Karvachauth special! Chalo..Chalo" says Dadi and Annie and Dadi leave from there.
"How dare this old woman insult me?" says Pam, as Riya repeats, "How Dare? How Dare?" "I swear I will teach this oldie her lessons! Huh!" says Pam!
Mithali was feeling bored, because for the first time she was actually spending time in her house. The usual day would be wake up, have breakfast and then straight away head towards kitty parties being organised by her lady friends, or walk towards a club and spend her time socializing, shopping or even attend lavish events as the wife of the most talked about Indian Businessman in the whole of London - Mrs. Mithali Singh.
As she sat by the balcony of her room, she was lost in turmoil of thoughts and as her attention went towards two white kids cycling down the empty lane. Suddenly the small boy fell off his bicycle and from god knows where, a concerned mother came running towards him, "Tom! Are you alright my honey?" she hugged the crying little Tom and took him inside, consoling him, "Its okay baby! Your momma is here!"
This scene allowed Mithali travel back in time. It was already three months since she was married to Abhilash Singh and Savithri Singh, had died due to a cardiac arrest (weak heart). Things were sort of falling in place and Yuvraj too had somehow learnt to smile yet again, Abhilash had once again started getting busy in his business and Mithali had sort of blended into the so called lavish lifestyle of the Singh family.
It was a regular Sunday afternoon like this, when Mithali sat in the garden trying to impress some of Yuvraj's friend's parents and have tea among chitter-patter and line of gossips that followed, as Yuvraj cycled with his friends in the garden. Yuvraj fell off the cycle and started crying. Mithali stood up from the tea table abruptly and ran towards Yuvraj with concern and in this had dropped the tray in her hand, messing up everything around, as the clutches of the other women were all now soaked in tea. "Are you alright Yuvi beta?" enquired a concerned Mithali, as she sat down next to Yuvraj on the grass, trying to examine his hurt and bleeding knee. Only reaction she had then found was a hard push by Yuvraj, brushing her away and some harsh words that she recollected even today, "Stop pretending to be my Maa. You are not even close enough! And yeah! Stop calling me Yuvi, only my Maa is allowed to call me that. Get that?" saying this he walked from there.
"Oh god! What is this Mithali? How disappointing? We come here for the first time after Mrs. Singh's death, to only embarrass ourselves and spoil our expensive accessories. Our clutches! They are all drenched in tea!" said an angry Mrs. Mehta.
"Oh come on Mrs. Mehta! What did you expect? After all Mithali, just came from India! Hahaha! Being loud and extra dramatic is her right, isn't it? Let us leave! After all I think we have to go get ourselves some clutches you see!" said another woman from the lot and as they all left with a mocking laughter. The young Mithali had tears rolling her eyes as she had then promised herself that she would become, Mrs Singh. Today! It had been fifteen years since then and lot had changed now, while some remained to be the same.
Mithali did live up to the promise she made herself. Here she was successful as a perfect Mrs. Singh, but yet still she had those tears rolling down her cheeks even today. She recollected Yuvraj's words last night, "She is not my mother. She will never be my mother. All she is and will continue to remain for me is Mrs. Singh, wife off Mr. Abhilash Singh..." As she did, Mithali today had only regret filled in her mind, for being the one she was not. "Yes Yuvraj you were right. I could never be your mother. Never!" Mithali whispered and silently cried now looking at the little Tom who was now back again on the street cycling, but only with a plaster on his knee and his mother carefully watching out at her son, from the window.
