My Friend's Fiance

I am sure I will get beaten up someday, for disappearing and again all of a sudden making my entry back in the forum! Anyways this short story i just started long back... I dont think I gave any updates at all..so I thought I will atleast complete this one thing.

Marriages in India are always given so much hype that it has so happened that the first thing we associate with when it comes to Indian culture is the wedding ceremony. Abroad marriage is yet another legal formality, but here in this country Marriages are divine...they are made in heaven. No matter where ever you are, however you are or whosever you are...you cannot escape this bond called marriage if you are Indian. Hahaha...yes its true...then why do you think this term Big Fat Indian wedding got its origin.

Let me make myself clear "No Indian has ever and will ever escape Marriage"...So was the case with two lost souls Yuvraj Singh and Amanpreet Seghal in Short Yuvi and Annie...who lived thousands of miles away from the country of celebration - India as complete strangers. Strangers but not for long, hahaha...you guys watch for yourself what happened here...

London:

"What? W-A-R-A-T? What on earth is that now?" asked the 20 year old confused Annie to her daadi in the living room of her house in London. "Haiyya rabba, what do I do with this girl? Le, she does not even know the meaning of Warat. Who will even marry her now?"

"Dadi dadi...please not again to the same old boring topic of marriage." She said standing on the sofa in her living room with a puppy face. This certainly did not go well with daadi, she immediately signalled, "Get down...Get down right now. Girls of these days have no shame and don't even know how to behave with elders. Is this what your mother has taught you in the last fifteen years while I was in India?" She asked.

Annie could clearly sense another typical Indian saas-bahu nok-jhok in her house when she found her mother trying to listen to every bit of what her mother in law had to say from the open kitchen. These women seemed as though they were waiting to pick a fight with the other. Annie suddenly got down from the sofa.

Her mother was almost ready with her counter argument, when Annie spoke, "Okay fine. I agree to anything you say Daadi. Happy?" she asked. Uff...She was at least able to stop another Hindi serial scene from commencing. She was relieved but then her dadi spoke again, "Chalo good. First go wear something Indian, something that can cover you from top to bottom. Look at you, it looks like you are wearing some torn old clothes" she said eyeing Annie's jeans that had slits all over it.

"But?" Annie protested. "What but? Don't tell me your good for nothing mother has not bought you a single Indian dress in so many years." Replied dadi.

This time Annie was of no help. "Ya right. I am good for nothing. I work all day long all alone in the kitchen and I am good for nothing. I at least had Kamala (servant) who used to help me out. But no...Your Ladli beti Paramjeet's servant had to return to India and she took away Kamala also along. And you call me good for nothing? Good for nothing is your daughter Paramjeet." Replied Annie's mom.

"Oh lord, when will these women grow up?" Annie said while the two women continued with their never ending argument in the background. Annie walked to her room to wear something Indian and to also Google what warat meant.

On the other hand...

London University, Basketball court. Alumni (Old Students') Basketball match.

The Alumni Basketball match of this year was something the University eagerly waited for a year, because this time they had their old student and basketball champ Yuvraj Singh to play again another basketball champ Vicky Malhotra. The court was full; everyone possible was present there, right from the present students to the old students. In fact even the Professors of the University did not want to miss it. Lisa once the hot shot cheer leader of the university and currently a top notch model was ready with her team of cheer leaders. It was not really an excitement for anyone to guess who she was supporting in the match. It was obvious she would support Yuvraj's team because he was one of her crushes in college.

Both teams were set for the ultimate battle to begin and with the whistle of the referee the match began with Yuvraj taking the ball first. It was a nail biting match and the audience were kept wondering who the winner would be until the last moment when Yuvraj threw a basket and won it. Both Yuvraj and Vicky played the match as though they were born enemies of each other; however it was a known fact that Vicky and Yuvraj were the best of friends anyone could ever find.

In the Singh Bungalow: (Dining Table)

Abhilash Singh, Yuvraj's father, was a well known business man, his name was very popular in the London Corporate Circle, and however he was not very liked by his only son Yuvraj. Mrs. Mithali Singh, Yuvraj's step mother, was once a top notch model, but after getting married to Abhilash, she quit modelling and now had turned into a socialite. She too was very well known figure in the kitty parties. She had all the style, attitude and poise required to be called the perfect socialite woman. However, one thing she lacked was a bit of love that she never gave to Yuvraj. The Singh family though appeared to be a perfect family to any outsider was filled with hatred. To be frank there really was nothing called a family, because family was one with Love. On the other hand, Singh Bungalow was more of a office where three people met every day on a very formal note. The actual understanding of relationship for them was a obligation one had to fulfil towards the other.

Abhilash: Hey, Mithali. Where is Yuvraj?

Mithali: Hmm... He must be with his friends. Don't worry much about him Mr. Singh. He is grown up now. He can take care of himself. (She said with an assuring smile)

Abhilash: Yes. You are right. That is exactly what I feel. I think it is high time for him to now, start taking responsibilities and get settled in life.

Mithali: May be you are right. I think we should talk to him about getting married. It seems to be a right time.

Abhilash: Yes. We should talk to him about it. Let us talk over it at dinner today.

He said, leaving from there. So did Mithali after she was done with her breakfast. She had to attend fashion show and she surely did not want to miss it.

Locker Room, London University:

Vicky: Shucks Man...If I would just win this match.

Yuvraj: Hahahaha... Not that easy mate. You are competing against Yuvraj after all. (He said teasingly)

Actually, this side of Yuvraj was rarely seen by the world outside. In fact not even in his house. It was only Vicky who Yuvraj would open up with and once before did to his mother who left him all alone in the cruel world when he was only 8 years old. Since then the only relationship he understood was that of a friend which Vicky was. No one could ever take the place in Yuvraj's life.

How would Yuvraj react when his parents would ask him to get married? For that wait for the next update.

"What?? Marriage?" he spat the water in his mouth. Yuvraj, Mithali, Abhilash and Vicky were at the dinner table in the Singh Residence. It was the usual family perfect dinner, which Mithali could boast about in her kitty parties to show off how perfect her little imperfect family was. However Yuvraj had insisted that Vicky stayed over for the dinner, as he badly wanted to avoid the awkward dinner it would be for the three of them. That is when Mr. Abhilash brought up the topic of Yuvraj's wedding.

On seeing Yuvraj's reaction, Vicky who was eating pasta dropped it down and blurted out laughing loudly, such that Mithali and Abhilash started staring at him. "Sorry," he said controlling his laughter and pretending to be not interfering in their so called family discussion.

"Yes Yuvraj. You have to get married one day or other then why not now? After all there is nothing wrong in getting married. You will become more responsible..." Mithali tried to convince him and advice him on why he should marry, while Yuvraj cut her off mid sentenced, "Yeah! Your right Mrs. Singh! But I wonder which snobbish kitty party friend of yours has a pretty daughter now all of a sudden." He said these as his voice was filled with sarcasm and got up to walk from the table.

"Yuvraj! Mind your tone, will you? Don't dare forget you are talking to your mother!" Abhilash raised his voice seeing Yuvraj's behaviour towards Mithali.

"No DAD! You are wrong! She is not my mother. She will never be my mother. All she is and will continue to remain for me is Mrs. Singh, wife off Mr. Abhilash Singh who was once my father and the reason for my mother's..." Before Yuvraj could complete his sentence a tight slap landed on Yuvraj's cheeks. It was Mithali. "Yuvraj! How dare you talk to your father in that tone? God Damn!! He is your father and he for god sake just wants your happiness." Mithali said.

Yuvraj was shocked and not just Yuvraj but also was Vicky, Abhilash and everyone around including their household help Mrs. D'Souza. This was for the first time that Mithali had ever raised her voice in front of Yuvraj, let alone slap him. For once Yuvraj could see his mother in her eyes, and ever since his Mother's death, he had never seen this in Mithali's eyes. His eyes had turned moist. He knew if he had stayed there for even a second longer he would break down, and he did not want Mithali or Abhilash to know this soft corner of his. He walked away from there, while Mithali now stood there with tears rolling down her eyes. Abhilash too walked from there as his phone rang leaving behind Vicky, Mrs. D'Souza and Mithali.

"Aunty! You don't worry. I will talk to Yuvi! He is a bit stubborn and you know that very well." Said Vicky trying to assure Mithali that he will take care of Yuvraj. For the first Vicky realised that Mithali was not that irresponsible a mother, Yuvraj always thought she was. Mithali sat down helpless on the chair, while Mrs. D'Souza walked up to her. "Mithali ma'am! I know you are feeling bad for what you did. But, it was much needed. If Savithri Didi was here, she too would have done the same. Ma'am, if only you had done this much earlier, things would be much different today. Yuvraj would not be the Yuvraj he is today. But it's okay! I am happy to see Savithri Didi back in this house once again." Mrs. D'Souza had tears of happiness as she said these sentences to Mithali and walked from there.

Next day morning, Annie's room was a mess with her dresses lying all around the room, while she was busy digging through her wardrobe. Suddenly as she was busy checking out the different dresses dadi ma enters talking to someone on the cordless phone, "Arey! Girl calm down and stop with this stupid angrezi accent of yours! And what do you mean by your name is Naro! Which place are you from? Chup! Stop pretending to talk in that fake Hindi of yours! I know proper English! I might be your friend Annie's Dadi, but I am a well educated Dadi. Get it??"

As soon as Annie realised Dadi's voice she startled and in the hurry hit her head to the wardrobe edge. She snatches the landline from Dadi, "Hello! Naro? Why did you have to call my landline? Ohh... Opps yeah! I left my mobile in the living room itself! I had kept it for charging there and it is in silent. Haan... That was Dadi! Hmmm..Yeah...Hmmm...She is right here. Yeah!! Cool I will meet you in the cafe in half an hour. Yeah! Okay bye!"

"Haiyye rabba!! Yeh kya? Satyanash ho tumara! Look at the room. This is worst than a kid's room! Why do you have to make the whole room such a mess? When will you even learn?" said Dadi looking around at the scattered room.

"Uffoo Dadi! You wanted me to wear something Indian! That's why I was searching for one. That's all! Waise Dadi, I wanted to ask you something..." said Annie.

"And what is that? Look Annie, don't you dare give me some reason for not keeping the warat ahha! These days' girls have some reason or the other! Don't you forget you are an Indian, not firangi, like what was that girl's name?..aah... yeah Naro!! You are not some firangi like Naro sharo!!" said Dadi annoyed.

"Uffoo!! Dadi...Dadi!! Calm down. First of all Naro is not Firangi! She is an Indian like you and me! Not all from outside Punjab are firangis! She is from Assam, and second I will keep the Warat! I said na once? All I wanted to ask you is that I want to go to the cafe to meet my friends. Can I go?" asked Annie.

"What Cafe?" asked Dadi with a Hitler look. "I knew it! You have to have a problem with everything. Gaawwaad!! Why?? No matter what I want to do, you have to interfere!" said Annie annoyed with Dadi and slept on the bed and mocked crying.

Looking at this Dadi thought to herself, "Arey Bhaghawan! Aaj kal ke bache aur unke nakre!" She walked towards Annie and sat on the bed, "Annie Puttar! Listen to me. When did I say you cannot go?"

Annie gets excited, "Really Dadi?" "Yes beta! You can go. But there is one condition." Replies Dadi.

"Condition?" Asked Annie.

"Yes! I will also come along with you." Said Dadi with an excited smile. "What? Are you kidding me?" asked a rather shocked Annie.

Mithali is sitting in her room in front of the dressing table. Abhilash isn't there at home as last night due to an emergency business call he had to leave for the US. Mithali opens a drawer and takes out an old paper. It looks like an old letter. She opens the letter and reads it, and she goes on reading it, she has tears rolling down her eyes. She closes her eyes, as pain is clearly visible on her face, she recalls herself and Abhilash standing next to each other with the wedding garlands still around their neck. Savithri standing next to them with tears in her eyes, as she suddenly collapses on the floor and an eight year old Yuvraj returns home from school at the exact very time to see Savithri fall, he shouts, "Maaa" and runs towards her and starts shacking her violently, urging her to wake up! Mithali and Abhilash run towards them, when Yuvraj angrily pushes Abhilash away and starts begging Savithri to wake up! He cries and shouts such that his voice echoes, throughout the house, "Maaa!! Maaa!!" Mithali is standing there dressed in a normal red sari, a necklace around her neck and her newly found ornament the mangalsutra and the red vermillion on her head! She tries to control her tears, but she cannot. She whispers, "Kyun?".

Yuvraj wakes up from his bed shouting, "Maa.!!" He was sweating and he looks at the picture hung on the wall with him and Savithri playing, where Savithri is trying to tickle him and he goes on laughing. He recalls, how he was angry on Savithri for not taking him along with her for shopping and she starts tickling him to make him laugh. It was Abhilash who clicked that picture and then he himself had joined them in the tickle fight. Yuvraj has tears rolling down his eyes, "Why dad? Why did you do this?"

What was the letter that Mithali was reading? Who wrote it to her? Dadi in a cafe with the youngsters, Would Annie be able to manage it? Will Dadi like Annie's friends? How will Yuvraj be able to walk out of his past? Will Vicky help him do that? To know this wait for the next episode of - My Friend's Fianc.
