Part 3
There were mourning screams and cries being heard everywhere. Widows and orphans of those who martyred displayed their heartfelt emotions presenting a really moving picture for any onlooker. They all had gathered to perform water rites for those left them after disastrous war.
At a distance from there, he watched and felt the pain in those cries tearing him apart. What he lost and what he gained, it was difficult to assess .Even though Yudhisthir had won the war, he was a defeated man standing with head held in shame and remorse.
Yudhisthir had stayed back after his brothers and Mother Kunti left from river shore where they did water rites of their kin and one name in those prayers was of his elder brother whose existence he had just got to know and tragedy was that very existence was no more.
He was feeling worn out after crying out his heart out on the loss and cursing his mother for fate of her first born. He felt like someone snatched away his soul and teared it apart into thousand pieces and what remained was a dead man watching his life slowly going away. It was hard to accept for him that just a day ago he was rejoicing his own elder brother's death as they knew victory was certain once Karna was gone. Before his death, he had spared Yudhisthir's life. He recounted the events at battlefield when he was on the very edge of Karna's aim. They say that he never misses any aim. But he missed that day. Was it only his promise to their mother or his brotherly love? Unanswered questions bothering Yudhisthir even more this time.
Why Mother? Why? ... He barely whispered to himself.
He looked back in time at one such memory of a night between him and his brother. The night where he actually felt he had him by his side as his Jyesth. He could now comprehend each emotion that he saw in Karna's eyes, every bit of it... Yudhisthir now knew that Karna had known the truth just before the war.
He recalled his words to his elder brother I have always looked up to you as my elder brother, now every emotion that Karna felt could be felt by him too. He had often wondered what made Karna stay with him that night. He wished Karna would have just embraced him once that night. They both would have cried at their fate together. He would have given everything up for his Jyesth perhaps that is the reason Karna never revealed to him. He looked at the setting sun near horizon with many complaints. Sun appeared gloomy that evening, it was slowly disappearing among those clouds beneath.
Ahh Jyesth, I wish I too had known.. I would have touched those feet that night...I wish you would have held me in your arms like your child. With those words aloud, he bend down on his knees as Sun filled the sky with its last glorious cry ..
You held my hand when I was torn
Oh brother, you took my guilt along...
I tried to be a father for my younger borns
That Canopy is what my whole being longed
When I was crushed between right and wrong..
You broke into that comforting song...
..Deeds of your kind heart will never be forlorn...
..You gave me a new life my mother's first born..
As I feel you again in that breaking dawn
I will find your precious blessings along!
