Now Let Me Sleep is an awesome book and the only way I could digest the KaLi angle.

.Sabhayata, you said you hadn't read any good Karna books. Read this one. But read it on a bright sunny day, sitting outside. It's a very dark and depressing POV.

I think the trouble is that in our society we generally want the hero opposite the heroine. So whoever is writing Karna drags poor Panchali into the picture. Which would have been fine, if they had ever shown the slightest positive inclination towards each other or even ANY inclination.

In the epic, the object of Karna's obsession was not Panchali😆 and Panchali wasn't bothered enough about him to love or hate

I agree with every thing except the one in bold.I agree MJ and KW have some mentions of that angle but in a subtle way.But the book which made this angle so popular was POI and that was NOT a book on Karna. And Yajnaseni has unbelievable incidents projecting this angle🤢But again that was NOT a book on Karna. So I guess it is the other way round.Whoever writes on Panchaali drags Karna into it

It's the soap mentality.
You have a hero? He needs a heroine😆. I wonder what will happen if a hero ever remains single.

Why I said Panchali is dragged in is because the popular books which have him as the / a hero, actually present her as pining after Karna. It doesn't have to be a Karna focused book. As you said POI. Ajaya also has the same angle.

Plus all the pining they have her do, makes me nauseous. I doubt Panchali had time to pine or the inclination to do so.

They had absolutely nothing to do with each other in the epic. If CE is to be believed he didn't even attempt to win at the swayamvar. Even his disrobng inciting was more to attack the Pandavas. Sad to say, but those days, her feelings wouldn't have come into it. It was all about what affected the men the most. Sort of like "dekho, hum tere cheez ko haath laga rahe hein".

well I think its upto author's own view to write, they felt this angle can be explored so they did. we cant say its full modern day mentality when we can see even kashiram das mahabharat of 16th century contains jambul tree story.
but anyway modern or not some authors like to bring it. we cant tag them fan of any character for that .
lets see which book the show is following and what they going to dish out

Yes, you are right Jhum, it is for the authors to explore whichever angle they think will work. I missed the first episode since i was travelling but from what I've heard, it doesn't seem as if they are following any of the known books on Karna, but a version of their own. 😕.
For once, I'd like to see a show where Karna is portrayed as he is, with the good as well as the bad... and i am keeping my fingers crossed..

It is the author's right to explore any angle. But then, it is my right as a reader to critique. 😊

Thankfully for readers like me, there exists plenty of versions none of which ever even suggest such an angle, and actually never even have them interact except extremely negatively in the DS, so we can compare the authors' works to something

Vani...I think, the truth is, whoever writes on either Karna and Draupadi likes to drag the other into it... 😆
Whoever writes on Draupadi makes Karna a bigger hero that Arjun n whoever writes on Karna wants the heroine to have atleast some feelings for their hero...

So, I guess this is very much mutual.

As for Kashiram Dashi version having the Jambu fruit angle...well I once read an article by Pradip Bhattacharya where he said that Kashiram had himself admitted that while writing his version of Mahabharat, he had travelled in many parts of the country n heard various folktales...He had included all those in his version.
Jambu fruit is not the only folktale in his writing...
There's a lovestory between Lord Shiva n Mohini, a long elaborate marriage of Arjun n Subhadra where Subhadra is more desperate than Arjun, and when Draupadi falls down, the Pandavas actually stop and mourn her death.
Why are all these folktales never given importance n only the Jambu fruit highlighted?

The reason is simple...It is a very juicy topic that could gain attention...And the combination of the tragic heroine n tragic heroine is one that many want to see...

As for authors expressing their views...ofcourse they have the right to do it.
But the problem is, it's bcoz of their rights to write watever they want, people are fed with wrong ideas n they start debating with half-knowledge without trying to listen to wat others have to say...That's y some people like us get irritated with these portrayals...

Imagine a novel, where an author invents an angle between Subhadra n Duryodhan, n that novel becomes a bestseller...I wonder how people who like Subhadra(which includes me as well) would take that...

There is actually a Subhi-Dury angle in Bhagawatham, I think. They were engaged.

Bad example.😆

But people can write whatever they want to. I am fine with that. They just can't expect not be criticized for it.I have read POI and enjoyed Panchali in it except for the romance angle and I found the ending incredibly silly. 😆

But what I am mostly wondering about is the KaJu angle in the show. SidT seems like a big KaJu fan to me. Indo MB has an awesome KaJu scene before the war. I hope they take that tack since almost all of it is expected to be fictionalized anyway

Is this show about Drupadakanya Draupadi? or Suryaputra Karna?
