Supernatural Season 9 Review
"Mother's Little Helper" - You're No
Good

http://www.tvequals.com/2014/03/26/supernatural-season-9-review-mothers-little-helper/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+tvequals+%28TV+Equals%29
In this episode of Supernatural ,
called "Mother's Little Helper," Sam
heads off to run a case on his own
while Dean stays home to continue
the search for Abaddon and deal with
some demons - both inner and
outer.
Hats off to Misha Collins for directing
this wonderful episode. I always love
watching episodes when I know
they're directed by someone that I'm
familiar with in another medium. I
like to see if I can spot their
personality in the cinematography
and overall feel of the episode and I
definitely felt Misha in a lot of
scenes in this one - especially when
Dean was playing pool and when
Sam returned the souls to the people
of the town.
Another thing I loved about this
episode was the way that it used
Crowley to get to the bottom of what
was really happening to Dean. When
Crowley said Dean was scared, I
wholeheartedly agreed. Of course
Dean was scared to let himself be
taken control by the Mark of Cain and
the First Blade. He felt the power
once and he barely got back to his
senses before doing who-knows-
what. Who wouldn't be scared of
something like that, right?
Wrong.
The truth was that Dean wasn't
scared of losing control, he was
scared of how much he enjoyed it
when he did. Crowley spotted that he
was acting like a junkie - it takes
one to know one after all - and the
King of Hell knew exactly what Dean
was jonesing for. His flashbacks to
holding the First Blade weren't that of
fear, they were a junkie remembering
a high. I hadn't looked at things from
that viewpoint before, but it sure was
fun to be taken on that ride by this
episode.
In my recent Supernatural Chat
article, I talked about how a part of
me wanted to see Dean lose control
to the Mark of Cain and the First
Blade. I think it will be a chance for
us to see Dean like we never have
before and I can't wait to see what
Jensen Ackles does with that acting
opportunity. If I read the signs right,
it looks like that is precisely where
we are headed and that makes me
one very happy fangirl.
As for the rest of the story, I liked
finding out more about Henry and
Josie's last days before Josie was
possessed by Abaddon. It put a new
spin on it all to know that Josie
loved Henry and that she sacrificed
herself so that she could keep him
from being possessed. It was nice
that Sam got all of that history about
their grandfather. I think it's
something that the boys needed to
hear. I also thought it was great that
Sam recognized the soullessness of
the townspeople after having
experienced it himself. It made me
wonder if it was a further sense of
closure for him to get to give those
people their own souls back.
And now we also know that Abaddon
is building an army of demons out of
stolen souls. Crowley was waiting for
Dean to be "ready" for the First Blade
and now all they need to do is find
her and set Dean loose on her. I
have only one thing to say now: Let's
do this!
My favorite bits:
Lesson learned: Do NOT criticize
your wife's meatloaf.
Dean's not sleeping? Uh oh.
"I get it, Dean. I'm just checking in."
Dean's drinking again? Double uh oh.
Sam knowing that something was
wrong with Dean, even over the
phone.
Dean getting flashbacks to holding
the Blade. Oh boy.
Sam and his salad. Aw, that's so
Sam.
Creepy Billy is very creepy.
Dean ending up in a bar. This is so
not going well.
Sam realizing that the people in town
were acting like soulless him.
Interesting.
"You're lying to Sam like he's your
wife, which kind of makes me your
mistress."
Dean claiming he didn't know what
butt-dialing was. Ha!
The way Dean pulled the balls
together for racking up. Brilliant. So
much Misha all over that scene.
"How did you feel when you sunk the
First Blade into Magnus' head?"
"Not half as good as I'm going to
feel when it's yours."
"Love it when you talk dirty." - As do
we all, Crowley.
Crowley guessing exactly how Dean
felt when he held the First Blade.
Nailed it.
"I was so scared. I prayed and
prayed, but God didn't answer my
prayers. Henry and Josie did."
Josie stopping the demon from
taking Henry and telling it to take her
instead.
"He loves you too, you know. Like a
sister." - That so gave me
flashbacks to Sam when he was
possessed by Meg and talking to Jo
about Dean.
The fact that Linda Ronstadt's
"You're No Good" was playing on the
jukebox when Crowley and Dean had
their little chat. Talk about a perfect
song for both of them right now.
"Nothing like Cain? What's in that
bottle? Delusion?" - Dammit Crowley,
how are you so freaking smart?
"I'm going to go water the lily. Care
to cross streams?"
Dean talking Jake out of going after
Crowley. Though I'm not 100% sure
he did that for Jake's good or his
own.
Dean totally knowing that Crowley
went into the bathroom to shoot up.
Crowley totally knowing that Dean
wanted to touch his "precious" again.
Yep, it definitely takes a junkie to
know a junkie.
Finding out that Crowley sent "Jake"
to test Dean. Interesting.
Clapping and cheering out loud when
Sam pulled out his phone and had an
exorcism recorded on it. DAMN but
these boys have gotten good at their
jobs over all these years. Well done,
Sammy!
PS: I now need an exorcism recorded
on my phone, pronto. You never
know, right?
The returning of the souls being both
a happy and a sad moment. They
went back, but then the people had
to live with what they'd done.
Beautiful sequence and the music
was absolutely perfect. Nice job,
Misha.
Sam telling Dean about Abaddon's
plans to mine souls and create an
army.

Supernatural 918 Review: Meta
Fiction

http://thegeekiary.com/supernatural-9x18-review-meta-fiction/9270
Meta Fiction was jam packed with
moments that fans have been looking
forward to for weeks. We started
right out of the gate with Dean's
highly anticipated shower scene that
had fandom worked up since the
promo first aired. This was followed
a few moments later by Castiel
gracing our screen for the first time
in weeks, which came as a welcome
relief to many fans who'd been
missing the angel. Both of these
events inspired tags on Twitter
before the episode even aired. The
tag #WetDean was created to
celebrate the heavily marketed bit of
shower moistened skin and #
HelloCas was started to welcome
back the fan favorite Castiel. The
latter trended in the United States at
several points and received over
12,000 tweets in a 24 hour period.
There were other explosive surprises
in store, though, including the
sudden reappearance of another fan
favorite who had been long rumored
to be making a comeback. Overall
this episode proved that fans are
being listened to, to some degree,
and given what they want to the
extent that the narrative will allow. It
shouldn't be a surprise, though, as
this episode was written by Robbie
Thompson who has proven time and
time again to have his finger on the
pulse of a large portion of the
fandom.
The beginning of the episode was
heavily Castiel and angel-story
focused. There was a collective gasp
in the fandom when Richard Speight
Jr appeared to have returned as fan
favorite archangel Gabriel. There have
been rumors for so long that he'd be
coming back that many people had
begun to dismiss them as wishful
thinking. In the past few weeks leaks
hinted that he was spotted on set,
which was definitely the strongest
hint that we'd had in a couple of
seasons, but was still largely
dismissed as him possibly just
visiting friends in Vancouver. Even
cast and crew tweeted to deny it,
though their wording was very
precise - Richard wasn't returning in
the role that we were familiar with.
Indeed, it turns out to not actually be
Gabriel, but just a ruse by Metatron
to teach' Castiel a lesson. It's
disappointing not to actually have
Gabriel back, but it was still a delight
to have Richard Speight Jr return so
overall I'm happy. I just really miss
the sassy archangel being a more
permanent fixture on the show.
Moments before Gabriel disappears,
Castiel asks him if he was really
alive and we're given an ambiguous
eyebrow wiggle that leaves the door
wide open for the angel's return.
Whether they'll ever actually return
him to us is still not known, but it's
clear that the showrunners are aware
of how much he's loved. During
Comic Con 2013 I was lucky to have
a few moments with Producer Jim
Michaels and when I questioned him
about Gabriel he made it clear that
they were very aware of his
popularity. I'd say his return is one
of the most demanded, second only
to Castiel's after his departure in
season 7. There's not as large of a
movement for Gabriel's return as
there was for Castiel, but fans have
definitely been vocal about how
much they love him and we've
definitely been heard. It's possible
that having Gabriel return this way
was an attempt to please our desire
to have him back without rendering
his very emotionally impactful death
completely meaningless. It's a hard
balance to strike and while I'm sad
that it wasn't really him, I'm still
grateful for the effort.
The story is consistently returning to
the idea of Castiel being a leader to
the angels that are rebelling against
Metatron. It's become clear now that
this is a carefully written plot by
Metatron, so my earlier conflicting
emotions over this appear to be
justified. I very much enjoy the idea
of Castiel being a unique angel that
others look up to and admire, but
he's stated repeatedly that he does
not want to be a leader. The last time
he tried to lead things went terribly
wrong and he disappeared for the
better part of a season. He was
essentially presumed dead until he
was found without his memories in
the latter part of season 7. As many
fans are predicting that the season
will end with Heaven and Hell being
permanently sealed off and Misha
has yet to be signed on for season
10, it's also a concern that he may
lead the angels back into Heaven and
get stuck on the other side of the
door. So while I admire Castiel's
uniqueness and the admiration he's
earned among the rebel angels, I
really don't want to see him go down
this path for many reasons. I don't
want this to backfire and I don't want
to lose Castiel again. The end of the
episode seems to indicate that he's
going to have to take on the role of
leader whether he wants it or not. I
hope this time works out better than
the last one.
The brothers have possession of
Gadreel for a large portion of the
episode so while it was brothers-
light for a while, their impact on the
main plot was definitely heavy. They
start out trying to get information out
of him, but their focus quickly shifts
when it becomes clear that he's
valuable in other ways. The Mark of
Cain causes Dean to nearly kill the
angel out of rage, which doesn't
really seem like a problem for
Gadreel. The angel would rather die
than be chained up and is very
purposefully egging Dean on. It's
hard to get information out of
someone who is willing to die, and I
really don't like the idea of Dean
torturing for information in the first
place. It hits too close to his time
torturing in Hell and the torture scene
with Alastair. I'd rather we just leave
the idea of chaining people up and
hurting them to make them talk
behind entirely. It's overplayed.
It quickly becomes clear that Gadreel
a useful bargaining chip with
Metatron, who's holding Castiel
captive. They make an even trade
with Metatron to gain Castiel's
freedom, proving once again that
Castiel is important to the brothers
beyond just his usefulness as an
angel. They could have outright
refused the trade, killed Gadreel out
of revenge, and stuck their middle
finger up at Metatron, but they would
rather have Cas back more than any
of that. Though Cas left down his
separate path once more at the end
of the episode, I'm grateful that the
narrative cemented him as an
important part of the Winchesters
lives. The reunion of Team Free Will
was very touching and I was glad to
see all three boys back together,
even if it was incredibly brief. Thanks
for the reunion, Robbie Thompson.
The episode gave us a lot of great
stuff and moved us back towards the
main plot. I'm always a little
disappointed when we move away
from story arc heavy episodes, so
this trajectory near the end of the
season has me hopeful that we'll be
heavy on plot through to the finale.
I'm definitely nervous, though. I
don't think there's ever been a finale
of Supernatural where I haven't been
scared, but Misha's uncertain
contract for next season has me
deeply concerned about Castiel's
fate. I feel like I'm reliving the
summer between season 6 and 7 all
over again. The effect that the Mark
of Cain is having on Dean is also
extremely worrying. We're seeing a
much darker side of him and he isn't
entirely in control of his actions.
While last season ended with Sam
weakened and vulnerable, the Mark of
Cain plot could very well turn the
tables and leave Dean suffering in
the final moments. It's going to be a
very nerve wracking few weeks as we
wait for the finale, but the one silver
lining is that there are no more
hiatuses between now and the end of
the season. The Supernatural season
9 finale airs May 20th.

SPN #9x18 Meta Fiction (episode
review)

http://jessm78.livejournal.com/508414.html
Here are some of my thoughts on
this episode...apologies in advance
for any bitchiness, thanks to the
crappy rainy weather my bad
shoulder is giving me trouble & I've
got a headache :P
Um okay so I still don't care all that
much about the stupid angel war.
Awesome to see Gabriel again and
his interaction with Cas was
interesting (I guess it was kinda the
way it was back in Changing
Channels), but he wasn't even back
for real, was he? I mean, Lucifer
killed him back in season 5, how on
earth would he come back? Unless
Metatron somehow brought him back,
and I guess he did as he was writing
this whole thing. But still, none of
that stuff was real, and... I don't
know, I was a little confused by all of
this. Maybe it's the headache but
maybe someone can set me straight
here about this?
Nice concern from Sam about Dean
in the beginning there. And it was
cool to see Gadreel's original vessel
back, I like that guy. But ugh, the
scene where they had him captured
and he was taunting Dean, telling him
that Sam had always thought that
way about him (that he would never
save him). He had to have been
saying that to piss Dean off. If it
were totally true, then why was Sam
so desperate to save Dean from
going to Hell and then trying to bring
him back (as was shown in
IKWYDLS)? Just as a warning to
anyone commenting, please let's not
turn this into a Sam vs Dean thing, I
feel crappy and I'm not in the mood
for it.
Metatron is still a bas***d and it
looked at the end like what he was
writing was playing out with Cas
(during that musical montage)
though I do like that apparently Sam
and Dean capturing Gadreel wasn't in
his plans. There is a chance that
something they do down the line will
come as a surprise to him. Or maybe
I'm just sounding Pollyanna-ish.
I'm still trying to digest this one. Still
indifferent to the whole angel wars
thing, though it guess we see the
lines have been drawn...Metatron and
Gadreel (and whomever is following
them) against Sam, Dean, Cas and
supposedly the angels who want to
follow him.
Oh and how could I forget? Shower
scene with
Dean...mmm. :D
Also on the shallow side, Sam's hair
puzzled me. A few times it looked
like it shrunk in the wash, LOL. Like
in the final scene with the boys
talking to Cas. Maybe it was humid
or something and Jared's hair got
curly...something I'm all too familiar
with myself. Looking forward to next
week's, it looks interesting.

All Writers Are Lunatics*
Supernatural Ep. 9x18, "Meta
Fiction"

http://scenethreetakesixhundred.blogspot.in/2014/04/all-writers-are-lunatics-supernatural.html?m=1

Novels and stories that examine,
experiment with, or poke fun at the
conventions and genres of fiction
itself can all be classified as
metafiction. The term "meta-fiction"
means "beyond fiction" or "over
fiction," indicating that the author
or narrator stands "beyond" or
"over" the fictional text and judges
it in a highly self-conscious way.
Patrick Kennedy
Being a writer, I enjoyed "Meta
Fiction" on as many levels as the
episode provided. It was written by
Robbie Thompson and directed by
Thomas J. Wright. Few things
make me, as the fans put it,
"squee." Not Dean, or Sam, or
Castiel. But intellectual concepts
and realistic touches? Squee!
There was the story, the story-
within-a-story, a breaking the
fourth wall fake-out, and my
favorite, an exploration of what it
means to be a writer. Not only a
writer of a long-running television
show (There is an off-hand joke
about "retcon." Thompson tweeted
that ret-con is now canon), but also
the writer of stories. There is the
deep satisfaction of building your
own world, populated by your
creations. However, characters are
created, but they make decisions
the writer never intended.
Unexpected plot holes and mistakes
occur. Fortunately, there's
rewriting. But is that last a good
thing in this case?
"Meta Fiction" tied up many loose
ends, and did the impossible: it
made the angel war interesting. As
long as we leave Malachi and the
others out of it, I'm good.
THEN: A whole lot of stuff,
including Castiel stealing another
angel's grace.
NOW: In a quiet library, classical
music plays on an old LP, a fire in
the fireplace, books on the
shelves...and Metatron, in
spectacles, a figured silk robe,
tapping away at a manual
typewriter. I love Curtis Armstrong,
and I'm happy I've never seen his
other work. I'm unspoiled, shall we
say.
This is a deliberate throw-back to
Chuck, aka God, at the end of
Season 5. He looks at us (his teeth
are British, circa 1950. It ain't
pretty) and says "What makes a
story work? It is the plot, the
characters, the text? The subtext?
And who gives a story meaning? Is
it the writer? Or you? Tonight, I
thought I would tell you a little
story and let you decide."
The "SUPERNATURAL" title card is
quickly pulled off. Heavenly
trumpets blare as:
Dean is in the shower, and screams
of fangirls break the eardrums of
anyone in their vicinity. He looks
at the Mark and--can it be--a
SMALL CUT SCAR below it on his
forearm?? For years I've wondered
why those cuts insta-heal. Squee!
Sam's worried about Dean, and it's
a satisfying role reversal from
previous seasons. This time, Sam
has to watch helplessly as his
brother changes. Sam is scared
and out of his depth.
Meanwhile, Cas is drawn to an
empty warehouse by a strange
noise. En route, his coat snags on a
piece of machinery and the lining
is torn (important later, folks). He
finds a huge room full of dead
angels and the Horn of Gabriel,
which has been used as an angel
duck call.
The one living angel, Hannah, tells
Castiel that Metatron slaughtered
all who wouldn't rally to his cause.
She begs him to lead the rebel
angels. "I'm no leader," as he
insists multiple times throughout
the episode. When Cas returns to
his motel room, he calls Sam. Dean
listens with a smile as Cas says, "I
miss my wings. Life on the road...it
smells." Cas smiles hearing Dean's
voice. It's a lovely moment, and
the only one in the episode where
Dean seems at all like his old self.
Cas's character development is
richly enjoyable. Castiel's
experience as a human has opened
him up emotionally, leaving him
more vulnerable and confused.
He's at a level of vulnerability the
Winchesters were many seasons
ago. Sam and Cas are tentatively
forming a friendship that is both
about Dean and about itself. Both
man and angel have repeatedly
had the experience of being
controlled by others, and both are
similar in nature. They are both
warriors, Castiel instinctively, Sam
because he has to be.
Sam mentions there's no way back
into Heaven--"That's what Crowley
said," Dean gruffs. Sam remembers
a witch boy in Ogden who helped
them once upon a time, and drives
off.
The witch boy, now a stoner who
puts the Big Lebowski to shame,
runs a head shop, with a sideline
on fairy bones and gryphon
feathers. Gadreel comes in. The
stoner is adorable, which means
he's about to be doornailed.
This guy gets me really hot. Don't
judge me !
We're back at Castiel's seedy digs,
when the lights flicker and the tv
snaps on--to Casa Erotica! And
there is GABRIEL!!
(Cue yours truly clapping and
jumping up and down like a little
kid.) He appears in the motel
room, older and wearier, but still
full of wisecracks.
Richard Speight Jr. will now get
paid more for convention
appearances.
He's been in hiding in heaven, but
got hurt in the Fall. "I used of my
juice to get into po*n--that came
out wrong." They drive off in Cas's
pimpmobile. I want Cas to own that
car for the rest of the season.
Maybe the pimpmobile and the
Impala can mate and
have...extremely weird little car
babies.
Gabriel's incessant Rat Pack patois
wears thin quickly. Half of it could
have been cut, which would have
improved his conversation with
Cas immensely. Gabriel tells Cas
they're rebels and Gabriel will be
the new leader. Cas knows this is
out of character for Gabriel
(squee!). Gabriel points out they're
running out of gas (set-up! Squee!)
They pull up at a Gas-n-Sip to gas
up, where a gang of Metatron's
angels show up. Gabriel says he'll
hold them off, while Cas escape
and be the leader. "I'm no leader,"
Cas says for the umpteenth time,
reaches for his angel blade--and
discovers the lining is untorn.
When he tells his comrade,
Gabriel, crestfallen, says,
"Continuity errors." He snaps his
fingers and the Hell's Angels
disappear. Castiel pushes his angel
blade into his comrade, and it
sinks into a hologram. "Are you
dead?" Castiel asks. Gabriel,
smirking, snaps his fingers--
Castiel is bound and gagged in
Metatron's library. "I'll let you
decide," he says, rounding back to
the pre-credits. He has been our
unreliable narrator!
Meanwhile, in the abandoned
warehouse du jour, Sam and Dean
have trapped Gadreel in a ring of
holy fire. The Winchesters are
damned lucky our economy is in
the tank, otherwise most of those
warehouses would be fully
operational and they'd be screwed.
"Looks like you traded down,
asshole!"
Sam goes into BAMF mode (rowrr)
before Dean pulls him off and tells
him to go get Cas. Pot, meet
dangerously overheated kettle.
Dean's eyes are frighteningly dead.
Metatron is delighted that it was
the torn overcoat that gave him
away, drawing out the thread and
looking at it appreciatively.
(Squee!) Metatron gets sick of Cas
never getting any references and
blams! him with every book, movie
and tv show that Metatron has
consumed in the past millennia.
Cas's head doesn't explode, but he
can now name-check Muriel
Rukeyser! (Squee!) I have a strong
suspicion what Metatron just did to
Cas is going to backfire
spectacularly.
It appears that the stolen grace is
burning Cas from the inside.
Metatron wants to be the hero of
the story, and Castiel the villain.
Castiel will rally troops for
Metatron to slaughter, providing
Cas with an unlimited supply of
grace. "I'm no leader," Castiel says
for the 10,001st time. Listen,
buster, clam up and accept your
fate and we can all go home
sooner, okay?
We're back at the warehouse
where Gadreel is chained to a
chair. Dean is enjoying this week's
mandatory torture po*n. Gadreel
taunts him with the EXACT SHAME
SHIT WE'VE BEEN LISTENING TO
FOR NINE SEASONS.
Something original? "He can't deal
with your being bisexual and in love
with Castiel!"
As he said to Sam, "you're a
coward." A) This makes no sense
B) He says it the same way, which
reminds me that Tamoh Penikett
seriously needs to get that stick out
of his ass. Dean almost kills him,
but instead goes into the bathroom
to splash his face with dirty cold
water. Which begs the question--
why does Gadreel want to die?
W*F?
Sam goes to Cas's seedy motel to
find him gone, and a cell phone
with six unanswered messages
from Dean. (Aside: wouldn't it be
hilarious if it said "Dean" with a
little heart emoji?) Metatron
appears and offers him an even
trade, angel for angel. When he's
gone, Sam tries to reach Dean, but
Dean has also left his phone in the
old washroom and stomped out,
murder in his eyes. Seriously, Dean
could be the Big Bad right now if
he was pointed in the right
direction. He is f**king SCARY.
"Holy crap, Dean, you're turning
into a serial killer!" "Tell me about
it."
The next day, everyone shows up
at the appointed place. Metatron is
trapped in a circle of holy fire.
Only he's not!
He not only blows out the ring of
holy fire, he erases the angel
warding in the Impala's trunk and
releases the Men of Letters
handcuffs from Gadreel. Metatron
is now God . He knows the boys will
try to take him down. "It'll be a
hell of a show," he says, all but
skipping with delight. "I'm going to
enjoy watching you try." He
disappears.
Motel parking lot, night. Sam
points out that Metatron is
powering up using the Angel
Tablet. Dean makes a reference to
Star Wars, and Cas sort of gets it.
"Did you just understand a Death
Star reference?" Dean asks in
disbelief. Castiel looks at him.
"There's something different about
you." Dean gives him a reassuring
pat.
Cas grabs Dean's arm and rolls up
his sleeve. When he sees the
Mark, he quietly freaks and says,
"What have you done?"
"Now you can't be buried in a
Jewish cemetery!"
Dean pulls away and gets into the
car. Cas asks Sam to keep an eye
on his brother. Sam pats Cas on
the shoulder and says, "Be safe."
Gadreel enters Metatron's study,
and Gadreel asks--wait for it--"Is
the door secure?"
Metatron smiles and says, "THE
WAY HOME IS SAFE."
THERE IS A DOOR TO HEAVEN!!
(Squee.)
Wow, Crowley is one nasty bitch,
even when he's not in the actual
episode. Any chance of a Crowley/
Metatron face off?
Back in his library, Metatron talks
about how certain things did not go
according to plan. God's mistake
was publishing the first draft. But
Metatron intends to rewrite. "What
writer doesn't love a good twist?
My job is to set up interesting
characters and see where they lead
me. The byproduct of having well-
drawn characters is they may
surprise you. But I know something
they don't know - the ending. How
I get there doesn't matter as long
as everybody plays their part."
And that begs the question I asked
at the beginning: at Metatron's
hands, is rewriting a good thing?
There is a chilling montage of
Metatron typing in sync with Cas's
actions, as "The Sun Don't Shine
Anymore" plays.
Cas creates his own Horn of
Gabriel and welcomes his followers
at the motel--
--as Metatron types exactly that ! At
the end, there is a close-up as he
types: TO BE CONTINUED.
"Meta Fiction" left me mindf**ked,
exhilarated, and strangely
angry. Really angry, because now I
won't know how much of what we
see is through Metatron's eyes, and
how much he will determine the
action through his writing.
Metatron is now God. And from
now on he is our unreliable
narrator. And we won't know
when.

A Sashurai's Review: Supernatural -
Season 918

http://bladeofthesashurai.wordpress.com/2014/04/16/a-sashurais-review-supernatural-season-9x18-casa-erotica-1-13-were-all-psychological-thrillers-in-bed/
A bit of nostalgic fun returns as
Supernatural plays with a few
nonsensical red herrings complete
with a welcomed cameo and a taste
of finale's to come.
Metatron seemingly invites the
audience to partake in a story he's
writing detailing events with Sam,
Dean, and Castiel. After Cas
discovers dead angels surrounding a
symbol, he and the Winchesters track
Gadriel to Ogden. Sam and Dean trap
Gadriel while Castiel is reunited with
Gabriel who admits he faked his own
death and hid away until the fall. He
wants to resume his leadership role
and convinces Cas to join him. They
reach a gas station and are
confronted by Metatron's angels.
Gabriel attempts to suade Cas in
leading the renegade angels but Cas
realizes through a continuity error
that Gabriel isn't real and that his trip
was a set up. He then wakes tied up
in a room with Metatron who informs
him that Cas will play the villain in
his story that he's writing.
Sam leaves Dean alone with Gadriel
to search for Cas and encounters
Metatron who agrees to a trade, Cas
for Gadriel. Meanwhile, Dean suffers
more from Cain's scar and nearly
kills Gadriel but stops himself as
Sam arrives to explain the trade. At
Cas's hotel, they attempt to trap
Metatron who feigns capture and
reveals he can't be trapped. He still
follows through with the trade and
looks forward to seeing what Sam,
Dean, and Cas will do. Cas discovers
the mark of Cain on Dean and grows
worried. Gadriel momentarily
questions Metatron's plan and Cas
creates the symbol he saw earlier
which calls many of the renegade
angels to him as he succumbs to his
role as their leader.
I'll admit, I fell for Gabriel's return up
until he and Cas began driving.
Something didn't add up with the
way Gabriel left his voicemail to the
Winchesters. That felt a little too
strange for a happenstance reunion
of the trickster archangel. Luckily, it
turned out to be a ruse. I did
however appreciate Gabriel's
eyebrow nod with Castiel's questions
with whether Gabriel truly survived or
not. Realistically, I'm hoping no. As
much as I'd enjoy more trickster
goodness and savvy puns, Gabriel
needed to die by Lucifer's hands and
stay dead. That would be a 4 1/2
year let down otherwise and I'm
certain some fans wouldn't like the
retcon regardless if it brought him
back or not.
I'm also hoping I understood the
reference correctly with Metatron
burning one of Chuck's books. I
know for eons there's still the theory
that Chuck "could" be God, even
though I'm fairly certain that's been
unofficially debunked. Metatron still
referenced God being a "first draft"
kind of character. There's dramatic
irony in there but the main thing I
take away from this is that Metatron
burns a story that happened and
prepares to write his own. Even if
Chuck was more than he seems,
Metatron wants to own the story and
write it to his advantage. Does this
mean the angel tablet indeed has
given him super dominion over the
plot of the show? It's interesting to
think about. Metatron prefers to think
of stories as what drives us, humans
and supernatural alike. He
understands rewrites and uses
several writing terms to explain parts
of the plot to Cas. He also infused
Cas with all his movie and book
knowledge, which I hope comes in
handy in future episodes with Cas's
awkward reactions to pop culture of
the past and present.
The mark of Cain was left a bit in the
dust in this episode. Keeping it
attached on Dean's radar is fine, but
removing the moment when Dean
chooses to not kill Gadriel...again,
but the wrong move. It would have
made more sense if the whole scene
centered around Dean feeling like he
needed to kill Gadriel because of the
mark and not after the fact. For beat
purposes I get the pacing of the
episode as Sam needed a chance to
drive back and find Dean in his
bloodied position, but leaving that
scene out felt rushed and
unnecessary. I hold no love for
Gadriel and even though it seems
Gadriel may be on some cusp with
questioning Metatron's plan, it still
doesn't matter. He crossed the
brothers and won't be trusted ever
again. Even Cas's discovery of the
mark was barely handled with
nothing more than a vague warning
to Sam to "keep an eye on him" If
Cas knows the destructive capability
of the mark and got upset when he
found out, he should be doing a lot
more than just giving idle warnings.
Maybe he doesn't know truly what
will happen to Dean but it felt very
shoehorned in for this episode.
Still no demon/angel crossover plot
yet. I'm beginning to feel like
Supernatural is divided between two
shows. The Winchesters are
surrounded by many enemies but the
real fight between Angel and Demon
has yet to begin. I'm just hoping it
still does at this point. I don't want
to see separate resolutions without
some kind of epic battle between the
two. Maybe it's a season ten thing,
I'm not sure. That sure feels like it
would be dragging a bit. Abaddon
and Metatron need to have a few
serious scenes together, I'm sure
they'd steal the entire episode if they
did.
Overall, I enjoyed the direction "Meta
Fiction" went. It wasn't too over the
top with pop-culture puns, or dense
full of self title references. One can
never tell where Metatron's "meta"
schtick starts and stops, but
throwing in Gabriel for a few
moments was a positive and proved
to show that the show hasn't
forgotten one of the better angels of
the series. Only one episode remains
before "Bloodlines" begins. Who will
appear? Who will steal the show?
How connected will Sam and Dean
be in the beginning, if at all? Lot's of
questions coming our way. Stay
tuned for the next installments.

Once again tfs 😊 the second one has realistic criticism esp the part where it says dt Cas shud hv done more than giving out vague warnings if mark ov cain wz really a big deal , dean nd his mark ov cain hv bin put to dust / sidelined purposefully i guess nd therez no chance ov development in his story b4 epi 21 cuz 19 wud b focusing heavily on vampires nd 20 on new characters ov bloodlines , they R really testing the patience ov us fangirls😉 oh nd i agree wid the writer the gadriel torture scene wz rushed nd so wz d scene wid dean in shower😡😆
