Hello everyone! I'm new to India-Forums.
This is my first post ever, so want to start off with an analysis of the main characters.

Most Indian serials have female protagonists that are an annoying mix of misplaced righteousness, lack of self-respect and subservience to their loved ones- husbands/boyfriends/parents/in-laws/mama ke chacha ki behen ka beta etc 😆

I was pleasantly surprised that the writers of SSEL have chosen to portray their two female leads as normal, flawed human beings who are not always right nor always wrong. I like the fact that they are real people- sometimes we love them, and other times we hate them. Why I feel this portrayal is revolutionary because female characters on Indian TV are written with extreme qualities in mind- for Indian audiences- good= "will never hurt a murderer even if they are trying to strangle you to death just because he/she is your relative and you are a social reformer who has taken it upon herself to reform every human being that you come across" and bad= "career oriented, ambitious 'women who are home wreckers and child abusers".

Suhani-
She is the first female protagonist I have seen who has a sense of self, and has a belief system she stands up for. I like that she is a dark girl who doesn't see her complexion as THE complexity of her life. She doesn't undervalue herself for the "crime" of being born with more melanin in her skin than say, Yuvraj. She has a healthy self-esteem and I admired her when she stood up for her self and told off the Birla House residents during "Dadi's Gorepan Yojana". I was proud when she stopped Ragini from rubbing the cream onto her face forcibly, and stated that she is completely satisfied with how she looks, doesn't have an inferiority complex and will not fall prey to the truly dark underbelly of the fairness industry. Usually, female leads are willing to take anything from from their in-laws, be it kitchen karnamas or downright abuse, because it is the way of the "sanskaari nari". At the same time, Suhani more than annoys me with her utter ignorance of the fact that Yuvraj and her have no semblance of a husband-wife relationship, worms her way into matters where she is not needed and is an all-round ignoramus at times. Does she not realise that Yuvraj is never himself in her company? Right now, they are just two roommates who have graduated from initial dislike towards each other to reluctant tolerance.

Soumya- The writers of SSEL portray her with all her human foibles, and that's why I can appreciate her characterisation. She is not a typical Mahaan Bahu who will lie low during blows. I loved her when she told off Krishna for treating Rakhi like a child or when she told Rakhi to ask her before borrowing her belongings. I could relate to her, because these are reactions that normal girls like me or my friends would have to such behaviour. She calls out Rakhi for her unreasonable tantrums and doesn't allow her to run amok just because she is her sister-in-law (which happens in countless shows; other heroines go the extent of hiding their nanad/devar's crimes, and these toddlers finally realise that their bhabhi is an angel and stop their evil machinations against her). However, she has committed grave mistakes, like hiding Yuvraj's truth from Suhani or her lying during the recent Taala fiasco or her general immaturity. Again, she is still someone real, a person who you or I could very well know in our lives.

My point is that, these girls may make us feel like reaching into our screens, shaking them and saying, "Just what do you think you are doing?", but that's what signifies change on Indian TV- writers are now not afraid to have flawed heroines, they aren't scared of alienating viewers with female leads that are not angel-doormats. To be honest, the number of times I am irritated by Suhani are more than the times I like her, and that's because her character has shades- some that I like, some that I don't.

Sorry, my first post is pretty long, but just wanted to initiate a discussion. 😳What do you guys think? Eagerly awaiting your replies. Leave a comment below. 😊

Hi clarity,
Like the fact that the lead actors are realistic .suhani and soumyas friendship is shown beautifully.neither does suhani feel bad about her looks nor does soumya feel proud about it. both of them are very innocent and caring.jus that soumya has absconded from many situations like the dance, market meeting and wedding.she is a lil fickle minded and soumya portrays this very well.
Even the male leads do their part well.yuvraj behaves like man his class would and krishna the same.
The minute the show starts my two year old would say JIJI mama JIJI.she connects so well with Menaka.
There is no superpower in the show and there are no miracles.that makes it more acceptable.

Exactly! Usually, when they have this ugly duckling-swan friendships, both the friends are quite aware of this difference. The duckling hangs her head in disappointment when somebody points it out while the swan fidgets in guilt. I'm glad it's not that way.
Yeah, these characters outline different human temperaments quite well. Haha, your two-year old is cute. JiJi- Menaka's trademark. 😆

As you rightly said, there is no Bhagwaan like character who is the moral reference point for others to follow. 👍🏼

Thanks for your input! 🤗

Clarity I loved your post and the way u described the 2 girls. I didn't watch the show from the start bt when I did I just connected to suhani and her jovial and sweet nature. It took me a while to get used to souyma bt now that I have she really has impressed me. Neither is she tooo positive nor too negative she is grey bt not a normal grey character who can be manipulated easily. She reminds me of Aasta from iss pyaar except that souyma is more self indulgent than her. I really like hw she stands up for herself and is aware of the sort of ppl that she is dealing with even though she loves them she is not blinded by them or the sort of situation she is in. But also I get angry at her when she lies and does stupid things and she is quick to judge I do think that she could have tried abit more with that stupid sil of hers for her to like her. I do feel for her though she didn't fall for some1 for their looks nor think about their status nor did she worry about the material wealth that she had living with her mom. Bt at the same time just like any of us who could fall into the trap of being blinded by the faults that we see in our loved 1s just coz we love them she has done the same thing and is bearing the consequences. she didn't consider be4 marriage his very difficult, suffocating and nasty personality and now it is too late coz be4 marriage and now after Krishna is still the same person he was. If she had choosen for herself the right partner his parents and her living conditions would never matter and even when yuvraj flaunts his wealth in front of her it wouldn't matter at all and I think certain times when she is in his presents she misses the things she had(although the actress for me sometimes doesn't bring this to the character and it comes across like she likes him). But in any case souyma's lying personality and maybe not wanting to admit that she made a mistake by marrying krishna wnt allow her to leave him bt she is also seems to be a strong girl and may leave him when the situation becomes unbearable a lot quicky than probably other leads. Krishna - I have to say this character is very consistent same from beginning to now no change he reminds me of these traditional men who suffocate the life of their partners wanting them to confirm to want he wants them to be and wants to control her and he could be shown as a woman beater. He is weak, allows his anger to control him and is unbending in his ways. But than he is also honest, hardworking but at the same time he doesn't like being subservient to any1. This is a very complex character and has so many diff shades to it bt I feel coz they have soo many characters they are not giving this character enough importance. Yuvraj is oh god the writers are so confused with this character- is he bad, is he arrogant, is he all about beauty coz I dnt think he thinks that suhani is an ugly girl. Is he all about money the only time he has flaunted it way to much is in souyma's presences(from the time I started watching) bt at the same time he has never looked down upon suhani coz she is not as rich as him. I dnt see him as being greedy for money or anything like that. Bt most importantly he feels bad when the botox queen tells suhani bad things. Bt at the moment they just making him too complicated and bitchy to be tolerable. They truly have messed his character up. And then there is obviously my favourite character suhani I think its very rare to have a female character who is funny bt at the same time doesn't over do it and doesn't comes across as fake. She really does not have a confidence issue at all its weird how comfortable she is in her body and in her skin not that there is anything wrong in that. But I think here her character becomes abit unreal coz we all have self doubt about ourselves about our weight, colour of our skin, the way we talk to anything about ourselves we females, we always have something on our body that we dislike. I think even the most beautiful woman gets insecure most times. And it is a little unreal that suhai doesn't feel that way. And than there is a contrast in her character she is adventurous bt at the same she is almost unadventurous in her ways she refused to try something new and isn't even aware that she is like that. She was comfortable in her life with her parents bt here she isn't and I wish they would have made this more obvious with her character. But the diff btw her and souyma is that even though souyma knows that krishna loves her she isn't secure in her love and suhani feels that security with yuvraj and that maybe why she doesn't notice her surroundings much lol. And than I love that she is a brat she is quite spoilt in her ways and tries to get her own way for everything. she is in her own bubble and is nave but at the same time she isn't stupid but she allows her affection and the way she wants to see some1 cloud her judgment and this is also a reality of what a lot of us do when we have relatives we do try and see the positive in them. And than there is her r/ship with yuvraj I really dnt get why she likes yuvraj coz whenever she speaks about him its never nice she is kind of critical about him. And it would have been interesting if souyma hadn't made her feel like he liked her whether she would have softened up to him(bt than I didn't watch their initial scenes so not sure if she liked him 1st or not). And she is abit diff with him than others I dnt like that she is fightened of him sometimes. I think when it comes to their r/ship she is getting comfortable with him so maybe doesn't notice his behavior and most times she assumes that it is his arrogant behavior. Bt really all 4 of them bring something special to the show(yuvraj a little less at the moment lol) bt the girls are the stars and suhani especially for me. I think the contrast in her and souyma friendship is realistic and fresh 1 shares half of herself and the other everything bt that doesn't mean that the 1 is a better friend than the other in both cases. I am really looking forward to seeing hw suhani's character evolves will the ever so optimistic-ness of hers be crushed by the truth of life and will she rise or fall and will she be the same. Will being beautiful, thin dominate her in the future and the way she sees some1 and herself. And will distrust of others and maybe herself as well where she doesn't trust her own opinion of others affect the way she helps others and her spirit. And hw will it affect her r/ship with the 2 ppl she cherises the most souyma and yuvraj will she ever be open and trustful of their actions and emotions as she was be4. I think with her family the trust can never be broken bt with those 2 it can.

Thanks so much for this detailed response, Sandi! 😃 You have analysed the characters incisively and made very relevant points!
👏👏I didn't watch the show from the start bt when I did I just connected to suhani and her jovial and sweet nature. It took me a while to get used to souyma bt now that I have she really has impressed me. Neither is she tooo positive nor too negative she is grey bt not a normal grey character who can be manipulated easily. She reminds me of Aasta from iss pyaar except that souyma is more self indulgent than her. Agreed. This is why I really like Soumya's character, because she is a real person- someone you or I could easily be. I think it is revolutionary for Indian TV to have such a female character because usually characterisation tends to be extreme- you are either a pious saint or a vicious vamp. Here, she is fundamentally a good person, but has her share of faults.
Here, I think Soumya's reaction to what Yuvraj does is plain discomfort- she can understand that Yuvraj is trying to make a point and hates it. I agree, the actress sometimes makes it ambiguous, but I don't think Soumya regrets renouncing all her previous comforts. This is because her tears during the Sari Fiasco were for Krishna's humiliation and not because she had to return the sari. Further, we never see her irritated by the state of her house and she doesn't seem bothered by the decline in her quality of life. But in any case souyma's lying personality and maybe not wanting to admit that she made a mistake by marrying krishna wnt allow her to leave him bt she is also seems to be a strong girl and may leave him when the situation becomes unbearable a lot quicky than probably other leads.
Yes, I really hope that Soumya realises that Krishna was a mistake. I was trying to give Krishna a chance, but so far he has not shown growth, rather he has regressed into paranoia and is blind to his mother and sister's machinations. If he undergoes a change of heart, I might forgive him.
You are absolutely right about him being consistent. In fact, he is another character whose characterisation I admire because men like him exist in our society. They are closet chauvinists who want to control their wives. As time is passing, Krishna's insecurity and urge to change Soumya is on the rise. The truth is that Soumya and Krishna have a very immature relationship that is devoid of real understanding from Krishna's side. Before marriage, they were in the honeymoon period of their relationship and didn't realise how incompatible they can be. I feel that Krishna has an inferiority complex regarding Soumya- this is why he always thinks that Soumya feels she is compromising though she has never expressed any feelings to that effect. This has translated into a power struggle for him- he wants to domesticate Soumya and 'tame' her. Sometimes, I feel like she has become a project for him- one that he wants to improve, modify and rectify (in his mind). Ultimately, he is a regressive and superstitious person, as evidenced by his belief in Rachana The Mata.
Yuvraj is one of those characters who are good people but have been misled due to their life circumstances. It is probably a combination of being raised by his mother and Dadi. All his beliefs about beauty and status are values that have been instilled in him since childhood, so he feels compelled to abide by them. Yes, he can be a downright drama queen. The whole chunari fiasco today made me very angry- how could he humiliate Suhani's parents like that? No child would stand for it and I'm so glad that Suhani didn't cut a sorry face and stood up for her parents. My blood was boiling. 😡😡
Well, I think that she has had a sheltered upbringing and is one of those people who actually doesn't care about their looks. Such people do exist, though it may seem implausible. I think she recognises the fact that nobody thinks of her as a beauty queen, but isn't too bothered by it. She shows awareness of her physical attributes when dressing up, for example, but other than that it is something which has never mattered to her in life.
Oh, bang on! It's sad that both girls crave love the most and both haven't received it yet. One is realising that the man she loved is not all that he claimed to be and the other hasn't even realised that her love is just an illusion.
And than I love that she is a brat she is quite spoilt in her ways and tries to get her own way for everything. she is in her own bubble and is nave but at the same time she isn't stupid but she allows her affection and the way she wants to see some1 cloud her judgment and this is also a reality of what a lot of us do when we have relatives we do try and see the positive in them.
lol. 😆😆Even I like the fact she can be an oblivious brat at times. It adds different notes to her personality and she is not a stereotypical self-denying bahu.
Agreed. Suhani never was enamoured by Yuvraj, it was rather Soumya who put it into her head that he cares for her. Before that, she was never interested in him. It shows that personality is king for her. She is in love with the caring, affectionate Yuvraj and is not aware of his superficial, arrogant side. I think she will start discovering it through this chunari business.
Their friendship is not unrealistic. It is more or less an equal relationship where Suhani and Soumya meet each other halfway.
This will be an interesting phase to watch. Will the revelation of Yuvraj's truth shatter Suhani and her sense of self-worth? Like I said, she has had a sheltered upbringing where she didn't have to face too many jibes about her looks or was perhaps shielded by her parents from them. She doesn't have an evil sister or insecure mother who keeps reminding her of this fact, unlike other dark heroines in the past.

All in all, a great anaylsis! loved this discussion. 🤗
