It's very easy to make new accounts here...but we don't want to discourage genuine new members also from making new accounts. Instead we want to make it difficult for mids to abuse this easiness of making account and harassing old members.
We want to let the site remain user friendly by not discouraging making a new account here or by making newbie's existence extremely boring/disappointing. Denying newbies every facility, apart from posting, can do that. Right now, denying even the ability to post more than 10 posts per day is already a huge deterrent.
So what can we do?
Mids harass through 3 ways -
1 posting vile content publicly though posts.
2 posting vile content through pms
3 posting vile content on scrapbook/testimonials or by tagging
Now -
1 Abuse through posts - posting vile content cannot be fully controlled. We already have denied posting links and images to newbies. Filters for abusive words, though effective, can still be bypassed using tricks. Apart from this, offensive content is often subjective so what one person may find offensive, others won't. So that decision can only be made by a mod. Maybe giving special powers to some more volunteers, making them viewbies, mods or other such things and letting them exclusively handle posts with abusive words or content could further help tackle this problem. If atleast one mod or viewbie or other such person is available online at all times then the tackling of such abuse will become very quick and efficient.
2 Abuse through pms - one option is to fully deny pm rights to newbies and even senior members. But that would be detrimental to even genuine new users, who would find their experience on site very discouraging and possible negative. However this can indeed be effective as it would make it very difficult for MIDs to harass old members through Pms. Second method is the one I already suggested i.e give options to members, in privacy settings, whether they want to receive pms of everyone, or only of buddies, or make it selective i.e. they can select everytime whether they want to accept pm from someone or reject it without opening.
3. Posting on scrapbook and testimonials and Tagging - that option has already been provided to users to allow only buddies post on scrapbook, testimonials or tag them. However it seems not many people are aware of this so a sticky thread can be made about educating users about privacy and safety concerns on this site and what are the various ways they can make their experience on site more safe and private.
Hope this post will help you find some permanent solution to this menace.
