Hey friends,

I have discussed with Vijay about the suggestions mentioned here. We are considering the following options and need your inputs as well before finalizing a final solution.

Here are the options:

- Restricting the members post per day to 10 (its already implemented)

- They can not open new threads until they have become groupbie/senior member

- Posting picture/image and hyperlinks feature will not work until they become groupbie.

- Limiting their PM per day to 10 PMs

Good options. Any genuine Newbie won't know anyone to PM them. Only those with ulterior motive need the PM option as newbie. So I guess 10 PMs per newbie per day is too much and is totally not required.

This is true. Why would a newbie need to make write 10 PMs a day?! That makes no sense at all. Newbies are supposed to be new...they are not supposed to know anyone enough to send private messeges. Only stalkers and people who like to harass others use this PMing feature as a newbie.

However, being a newbie, they should be allowed to PM the mods and the mods can act as a mediator between them and the concerned person. For example, if I am a newbie, and I want to send a message to a certain someone, I can:

A) Either contact them openly, as in openly posting my concern. Or,
B) Contact the respective mod to pass on the message to that person. However, I don't know if option B will be a successful one or not.

Just a suggestion.

Regards!

And 10 PMs per day is enough to stalk a person and torture them. So I guess it should be no PM for Newbies.

I like these suggestions and agree with them, since sending sick pms to people and what not is unthinkable

Thanks, Munna. Guys, there was a time when IF used to be a user-oriented, user-friendly forum. Over the past couple years, I have noticed quite a few behavioral changes on this forum. What I want to highlight is that IF isn't the same anymore. I remember my modest beginnings as an active member on the Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki forum. I don't remember a single time when anyone was banned, caught maligning someone, or creating an unnecessary ruckus. Yes, disagreements take place once in a while, and I think it's healthy when disagreements take place. But to send someone mean, nasty messages is just a bit over the top!

I really hope IF returns to its original status as one of the best socializing Indian forums on the net. Thank you all!

They should be able to PM the DT, IMO. Any newbie may not need to PM other members IMO, but if they need any help and want to contact the DT, they should have that road open.

Yes, I agree with Aahaana. They can befriend a user and then send them a PM. However, once they start sending mean messages and the concerned person removes them from their list, the PM feature will be automatically disabled. Of course, it's needless to say that such troublesome users should be reported right away.

This is a good idea!!

I'm glad you went to the cops Xeta. Hopefully this will finally bring about some change in I-F. It was sickening to watch people being harassed repeatedly (and it's not just you or dg, we all know this has happened before) and barely anything was done about it. 😳

(This feature may sound harsh to genuine newbie's and not everyone add newbie's as their friends so it need to be reconsidered)

These should be implemented including the one about newbies not being able to send PMs to random members. They should be able to contact staff members and ppl on their Buddy List, no more. Is it harsh? Yes. But as admin you have to very strict when it comes to protecting your members from being harassed and their privacy violated as has happened so openly here. Ultimately these rules will protect the genuine newbies from being harassed in the future.

I also suggest an initial period (determined both by time spent and no of posts made on the forums) of moderated posting. Many sites do this and it's pretty easy to do on vBulletin. Not sure about I-F. The idea is that newbies are automatically placed in a restricted usergroup and posts from them do not immediately show up on the forum. They go to a moderation queue and have to approved by mods before showing up in the respective thread.

You know the place where we can see things like "Inbox, Scraps, Slambook..." ? Forum mods should see another thing: "posts in queue". By clicking on it they will be able to see what new posts from newbies are in queue and review them/approve them.

Perhaps you can implement it on certain forums before/rather than site-wide but it is something you need to consider.

Also, there should be an initial period during which avatars and video/image signature capabilities should not be available to newbies. Text is fine but no pics. Otherwise nothing is preventing them from putting up someone's private pics in their sigbox or something.

Please ask your coders to modify the system so that IPs of individual PMs are logged like that of posts. Currently this is not possible and the freaks take full advantage of this fact. It should also be possible to report PMs and scraps like we can report posts.

Implement security measures against proxies, keep a running list of suspected IPs, etc. Yes you can't make it foolproof but take steps to make things harder for the creeps.

Also, I've seen banned/deleted members' PMs are erased from the system. This is problematic as it means we lose evidence of the harassment. So do something about this (maybe move the problematic PMs - as indicated by the victim - to some secure forum accessible only by admin).

In blue is a much better option. Dishing out 10 pm's per day is still a stretch is way more than enough to do the required damage
