Vaishnavi gets grooming
By: Shaheen Parkar
Photographer: A hitList Correspondent
February 27, 2007

Vaishnavi

Apart from acting, telly actress Vaishnavi has other plans up her sleeve.

She plans to start a grooming school in partnership with a friend to teach young girls to mind their Ps and Qs.

When asked about her latest move, she says, "It is in the initial stages. I need to get everything in place. It will in partnership with a friend. By April end, things will unfold."

'Conduct'er

Why a grooming class? "Why not," says the actress. "Grooming and etiquette can give you that edge in your life and career.

So much depends on the way you conduct yourself today," says Vaishnavi, who will also provide dietary tips.

Interestingly, not many know that Vaishnavi is also a nutritionist. "I have done a certified course from the US. My sister, who is settled there, put me on the course which I completed through correspondence."

The actress has been giving tips from home to a few people in the past few months. "I had this plan to set up a nutrition centre but that has not yet taken off as I can operate even from home," says Vaishnavi, who herself knocked off the kilos after the birth of her daughter Margaret within months.

"It is all about how you burn up your food intake, instead of depriving and starving yourself," she adds.

After her exit from Ek Ladki Anjani Si and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role in Baabul last year, Vaishnavi is now back on the scene with the SaharaOne drama Solhah Singarr, in which she plays a mentally challenged character called Vasundhara.

Destiny

"After Ek Ladki, I went off for a long holiday to the US and took it easy for a while. The Solhah Singarr role was initially offered to me when the show began. But at that time, I was doing Ek Ladki so could not take it up. Now, the role is is back to me," she quips.

Incidentally, the character of Vasundhara was initially played by Rajeshwari Sachdev and after her exit the character went missing from the show.

Vaishnavi, who was earlier seen in shows like K Street Pali Hill and Kasautii Zindagii Kay, is also slated to feature in Anurag Basu's show Love Story, slated for SAB.

'I'm a dancer first'

Sudha Chandran may be very popular as a TV actor today, but she says it hurts when people forget her dancing skills

ROSHNI K OLIVERA

From playing Ramola Sikand, a style icon on TV, what does it feel to be playing a 70-year old in Solah Singaarr?
It was a deliberate effort on my part. The kind of roles I was being offered were similar to Kahiin Kisi Roz's Ramola Sikand. Because of my style icon image, people were deviating from the fact that I'm a good actor. Nobody tries to break their image when it's going strong. But I decided to. TV is the only medium where you can experiment. This 70-year-old character that I'm now playing is different, that of a matriarch who has seen everything, talks less... it's a strong character.
You are also doing a Tamil serial where you play a dancer?
It's called Jaiyam, which means victory. It's about a girl who belongs to a poor Brahmin family. She learns dance because she wants to make money and relieve her family of poverty.
Is this dancer's role in any way connected with your real life story?
In fact the producer-director Prabhu Nepal told me he saw my movie Nache Mayuri (this film was based on Sudha's life. Years ago Sudha met with an accident and lost a limb. But she refused to give up and continued her dancing with an artificial limb). Prabhu saw the film when he was eight-years-old and it had a lasting impression on him. He always thought if he'd make a serial he would cast me in it. So, it's a dream he has realised.
Do you think Sudha — the TV actor has caused people to forget about Sudha — the dancer?
It does hurt when some people say 'Oh, Ramola can even dance.' I'm a dancer first. Besides I got all the recognition because of the fact that I danced with an artificial limb. But anyway most people do know about my dance. Parents tell their children who may not be aware. So also, there is a school text book chapter on me.
You are also doing a daily Gujarati serial. How do you manage time for all of these?
Apart from the Gujarati show Saptapadi, I'm also doing the weekly serial Hamari Bahu Tulsi. And I'll soon be seen in an upcoming daily soap where I play a powerful role, almost like that of Dina Pathak in the film Khoobsurat. It's all about time management. It's very easy if you want to work.

Reel life buddies great pals in real life too

Urvashi (Vaibhavi Upadhyay) and Shagun Bhabhi (Akansha Rawat) of Sollah Singar are best buddies on screen in their Monday to Thursday serial and they've become best friends off screen.

On the sets, they share the same make-up room and while away all their spare time in each other's company. "Even when we have a holiday, Akansha and I hang out together," says Vaibhavi.

Last Wednesday, when there was no shoot, the girls went out and partied. "We left home at 10 and went to a spa in Juhu where we had a body massage, a haircut, a facial… The works!" says Vaibhavi, "After that we went shopping for clothes, tops and other knick-knacks." They were out for the full day returning only at 10 in the night, she added.

The girls also share similar tastes. "Like me, Akansha is also a foodie" says Vaibhavi, "that day we had jum-ke lunch in Juhu before going off to Bandra to shop." They've become so close over the past month that even when one of them is working, the other stays in touch over the phone. Next, the girls have planned a long holiday together.

Filling us in on more dope from the serial, lovely Vaibhavi said she was a passable singer but not trained. Her on screen brother, Sumer (Sachin Tyagi) is a professional. "During our lunch break or when the lights are being set up or whenever we get time we all sit together and jamao mehfils with songs. Whatever is demanded of us Sachin and I sing," said Vaibhavi, adding that she was now considering taking up classical training and raising her game one notch.

Hemant Chaddha is missing his gym

Hemant Chaddha is known to be a gym freak, but these days he is unable to work out because of his hectic shooting schedule. So what he does is carry dumbbells to the sets and whenever he has enough time, starts working out on the sets. That's not all, the man is planning to get more equipment and set up a full fledged gym in the studio for himself and whoever is interested in working out because, "I'm sure there might be others from the show also who do miss working out, although not as much as I do." Hemant who plays the character of Vikram in Solah Singarr on Sahara One is very particular about his physique and health and maintains a strict diet.

Sony feels the heat from Sahara
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 10, 2007

Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki,
All is certainly not well with Sony, and to top it all it is feeling the heat from SaharaOne. The latter has managed to fetch higher TRPs (those magical viewership ratings that make or break a show) than Sony, and this speaks volumes on the number games that TV channels indulge in for the top slot.

With Star and Zee leading the roost at No 1 and No 2 respectively, SaharaOne is gradually taking over the No 3 slot from Sony.

Says Kalyan Sundaram, programming head, SaharaOne, "It is all because of good content. We have done it slowly, but surely.

The Rajshri show Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki has been a channel driver for us and remains in the top slot. Now we have two new additions to the list.

Jay and Kinnari Mehta's Solhah Singaarr has shown a good rise in TRPs along with the latest entrant, Ajai Sinha's Ghar... Ek Sapnaa, which is also slowly making an impact."

Wise moves

Solhah Singaarr
SaharaOne folks feel that the going is good for them in the 9 pm to 10 pm slot. "When the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati began with Shah Rukh Khan, everyone reacted. But we kept quiet and did not reschedule our line-up.

And even in that time slot there has been a marginal rise in ratings for our shows," says Sundaram.

The channel attributes their good showing to their loyal viewers. "We have always had good following for Woh Rehne…, now even Solhah Singarr and Ghar.. Ek Sapnaa are picking up good following," adds Sundaram. "We would like to believe that this will be the scenario for a long time to come now," he adds.

Rescheduling spree

Ghar... Ek Sapnaa
For Sony, which has just axed Anuj Saxena's Kulvaddhu as reported 'Abrupt end for Kulvaddhu' (Hitlist, March 8), the channel's line-up of soaps is being rescheduled for Smriti Z Irani's Viruddh, which begins from March 26 in the 9.30 pm slot.

Thodi Khushi Thode Gham will now be rescheduled to 8.30 pm to replace Kulvaddhu, with Ek Ladki Anjaani Si at 9 pm, Durgesh Nandinii at 10 pm and Jeete Hi Jiske Liye at 10.30 pm.

Presently, it appears that Sony's attempts at daily soaps is not working wonders. Their reality shows like Indian Idol, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and most recent Bigg Boss did generate a lot of curiosity and hype but in the long run that doesn't generate revenues the way tear-jerker soaps do.

Says a producer on condition of anoymity, "Sony folks have been interfering a lot with the production houses and there are a lot of squabbles among them. Obviously, all this is having a telling effect on the viewership."

Aamna's show on Sony put off

The Film Farm project which was talked about as Aamna Sharif's big ticket on Sony post Kahiin To Hoga has now been postponed indefinitely.

It is learnt that the cast has already been informed about it. There was also a buzz that post his exit from Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Cezanne Khan was also supposed to be a part of the project. Apparently, it was all just idle talk.

'I was witness to the backstage bitchiness'

TV actor Kishori Shahane recounts her tryst with the modelling world

DEEPALI DHINGRA

If there was some way to describe Kishori Shahane Vij, it could well be — Jane of all trades! The 35-year-old actor has had 15 years of acting experience behind her and has dabbled in almost every medium, be it films, theatre or television. And recently, she even turned producer with
Mohatyachi Renuka, a Marathi film which is doing well in the interiors of Maharashtra. She's also busy with producing a Hindi movie Malik Ek, based on Sai Baba's life with Jackie Shroff in the lead. So what does she find most challenging to do, theatre, films or TV? "I believe all mediums provide satisfaction in some or the other way. It's because of my theatre background that I have a strong acting base. Television gives you scope to experiment with roles and movies stay forever in people's minds," she says.
Although she's worked in serials like Ghar Ek Mandir, Koi Apna Sa, Santaan, Sindoor and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, it's the first time that Kishori decided to experiment with an out-andout negative role in SaharaOne's Solhah Singaarr. "In fact, the makers of the serial had offered me a positive role in the serial earlier but I didn't want to do similar stuff again. That's the reason I even took a small break after Kabhi To Nazar Milao. But when they offered me the role of Triveni, I took it up," she recalls. And now, Kishori's thoroughly enjoying playing the evil vamp. "I had been apprehensive about
doing a negative role but I'm glad it's being appreciated," she adds. But considering these days, protagonists in serials are getting younger and younger, how much creative satisfaction does she find in the characters she portrays? "Till three or fours years back, when I used to be offered mother or mother-in-law roles, I would be apprehensive about doing them. But then I saw that even 20 year olds are doing these roles, so I decided to go with the flow. I'm concerned with satisfying my creative urge, after that nothing matters," she says. A little known fact about Kishori is that she had come runners up in a beauty pageant around four years back. "It was when my kid was seven years old, so I consider it quite an achievement. I saw all the bitchiness and competitiveness that happened backstage but I tried to stay above all that. I'm open to all kinds of challenges, so this was another feather in my cap," she says with a smile.

Sudha Chandran goes across the border

Sudha Chandran the favorite vamp of television has recently completed shooting for a Pakistani show produced and directed by Afzal and Fahim Burney. The show is going to air on Pakistani television in April next month.

Sudha says, "I have just come back yesterday after completing my shooting schedule of five days. I'm playing a negative character in this show as well. This lady is the typical mother of Hindi shows who is always harassing men. It is a very interesting role and for the first time I am playing such a role. The woman is the owner of a brothel and her daughter is a ghazal singer at the brothel.

"But that woman is jealous of her daughter, she doesn't like her daughter's customers who praise her and throw money on her. However one fine day her daughter's lover, who had left her earlier, comes and kills me and rescues her from the brothel. This is a thirty days show which will come on air next month. We completed the entire shooting in Dubai."

"Working with the Pakistani cast and crew was a great experience. They are very wonderful people. Resham is a very popular Pakistani actress and Faizal is also another very good actor. They were very good to me and I always felt that I was shooting in India. The atmosphere on the sets was very good the same in my daily sets here. I felt that we belong to same fraternity. I have been there for six days and it was fun to work with them. It's only politicians who draw boundaries between us and them and try to disconnect us. They are very nice people like us."

Sudha is also busy doing a show for a South channel Jaya TV where she is playing a dancer after a long gap. Sudha says, "My director Prabhu who saw my Nache Mayuri in South Africa so when he came here in India, he asked me to play this role. The show is already on air at the 9 PM time slot. I finish shooting in four days for entire month for this show. After 20 years I'm playing a dancer and I'm enjoying this role. Right now this is the only regional show for South Television I'm doing."

Apart from this Sudha is also doing two Hindi shows Solah Sringarr for Sahara One and Humari Bahu Tulsi for DD, both are dailies.

Star Kids Summer Trek

It is summer time, exams are over and schools are closed for the summer vacations. It's time to pack the suitcases, and go for a long family holiday trip outside the city. This is a regular routine schedule for all kids. Do kids who have well known actors as their parents get the chance to go for summer holidays with their celebrity parents?

Most of these celebrity parents are very busy. But still most do manage to take time off and take their kids for holidays.

Here are some stars talking about their kids and their holiday destinations.

Mrinal Kulkarni, (Alakhnanda in Solah Sringarr), says: "We always go out of India at least once a year. We went to Egypt last year in the Christmas holidays, as summer is not a good time to visit Egypt because its very hot there. This time my son Virajas (studies in Std 6), my husband and I are planning to go to Switzerland. I'll be going to Pune first, then we'll plan the holiday. I'm hosting a travel show (on ETV Marathi), so I will go to Austria for the show. I enjoy traveling very much. Egypt is very fantastic place. My son also enjoyed the trip very much. My next destinations are Dubai and Turkey."

"When we went abroad two years ago my son got lost in Disneyland. I was very scared and worried. Then I found him with Sachin Tendulkar, I was so relieved. My son was looking for a Marathi speaking person in Disneyland and he saw Sachin and attached himself to Sachin. It's a terrible feeling to loose sight of your kid abroad where you hardly find Marathi speaking people. I had panicked that time and I can't forget that incident."

Raja Chaudhary (Husband of Shweta Tiwari) says: " My daughter Palak's ( in Std 1) holidays are starting from 1st May, so we will be going out of India for our vacation. We will be going to Hong Kong or Disneyland. She is very fond of Disney. She is crazy for games so Disney is a good destination for her. We are planning our holiday in a way that Shweta can also come with us. This is not Palak's first trip to abroad. Before this we went to Malaysia. But at that time she was only two years old. However when we recently visited Goa, she enjoyed the beaches and we bought toys and Barbie Doll for her. She likes to go out of India."

"I still remember one incident when I first time took her to Madh Island. I had booked a resort there for her. That was the first time we both went together. She enjoys water games, swimming a lot. This time she wants to visit Disney club. She likes every character of Disney."

Pooja Ghai (Aavni of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye), says: "I have started my tour with my son Raaj with a visit to Shirdi. On 29th we'll go to Singapore for eight days. Raaj has been to Singapore when he was a baby. So now I want to show him the Bird Sanctuary, Centre Island, where he can see the Dolphins and go on the Panther Safari. Earlier he has been to London, Bangkok, Pattaya and Dubai. His demand list is ready and now I can also give him some more time, as I'm not doing any serial right now. Both of us are definitely looking forward to this trip. Raaj has passed his senior KG's exam and is excited about the trip."

Overexcited actor hurts costar during rape scene

Actor Faisal Khan (who plays Shakti) in a Sahara One serial Solah Shringarr was so excited to perform a rape scene in the serial that he ended up hurting Aakangsha Rawat (Shagun).

Says Faisal, "I was very excited because I had never done a scene like this before. I got so carried away that I included certain fight scenes on my own - I slapped her in real, banged the table etc. I was not at all nervous but Aakangsha definitely was."
Explaining the scene Faisal says, "I'm playing the bad guy in the serial who is the devar of Shagun. For a long time I had an eye on her, so one day I planned that no one be there in house so that I can rape her."

He adds, "While performing this scene I and Aakangsha were injured. I got only bruises but she was injured very badly."

Aakangsha says, "To perform such type of scenes is very embarrassing but my creative head said that it is part of the script. I got a severe neck sprain while shooting and I had to put on a neck-collar for one week. Even my left hand was injured as one glass piece hit my palm. At one point when I had put off the bulbs through a stick to hide, it was so near to my face that that I got really scared."

Faisal has acted in many negative roles. He was seen in Paraya Dhan, Banno Main Teri Dulhann and now in Solah Shringaar.
