That's because they try to revolve and evolve the story line around one particular person and will show that person as hero, heroine, villain, vamp, and what not. Sure Shruti ! Agree on the possible challenge that such a plot could give the writers in the contemporary context . But often such opportunities are screwed up badly after a short attempt at success !

Our epics had characters in such a way that each person's trial and journey had beauty. Each person evolved. Irrespective of the leads there were many parallel characters without which the story could never run.
