Today, life imprisonment in India, although it means that the convict has to spend the rest of the life in prison, is limited to 14 years in some cases when the state government, if feels that the prisoner is now no long a threat to the society, can release the prisoner.

But, it is a must the prisoner has to spend 14 years of his life in imprisonment. denial or grant of release can only be practiced by the state govt. only after completion of at least 14 years in jail.

does it by any means be possible that this 14 years limit for reconsideration has been carried forward from Treta yug to our present Indian society?

@attubaby I was just about thinking the same. Our life imprisonment these days as per IPC. But to be frank many people I dont think spend 14 years in jail. If they behave well and all they get released as soon as 7 or 8 years
@maverick yes Sita was allowed to wear jewellery because she is a suhagan. Vasishtha clearly tells this that Sita need not take all her jewellery and she can wear them.

If you look from Mahabharath perspective 14 has a great significance. It was on day 14 of Kurushetra war Krishna shows the proof to the world on why Arjun's choice of him without weapon was correct when he removes the disk from sun with Jayadratha in direct line of fire. It is that night where the weapon Shakti or Power goes from karna's hand and the direction of battle changes towards victory of Pandavas.

If you look from Ramayan perspective also though Kaikeyi may not have meant it, but it is in the 14 year the world knows why Ram had to take vanvass when he brings down Ravan.

So 14 in a way is a new beginning, change of tide etc..

Another thing maximum number you can get rolling dice is 12. Shakuni's area of expertise. Beyond 12 the dice cannot give. So any thought , any planning will work in one direction only for 12 years, beyond that it changes and 14th year is a proof of that change.

If you take rotation of earth itself it is like that 12 hr in one direction and 12 hr in another direction. So 12 is completion, 13 is start of change destruction of old and 14 maybe beginning of new.

Just a POV

@shruthi: have u heard cases of life prisoners released after 7-8 years on the basis of good behavior?
What I have heard is even if good behavior is taken in account, they get released after 14-15 years.

I think deep down Kaikeyi loved Ram however she acted the way she did out of fear for herself and Bharat believing Manthara.
May be she thought after 14 years Bharat would have been established as the King and Ram wouldn't pose any threat...

Kaikeyi actually sites the example of Asamanjas when Dasharath argues with her about the way her request goes against what is the pratha if Raghukul. She is immediately chided by Sumantra (who btw remains at Dasharath s side when king Dasharath is pleading with kaikeyi.). The fact that kaikeyi used Asamanjas s example to compare Ram's exile is in itself abhorrent to him.
Kaikeyi actually believed that Bharath would be the next in line to Ram ( which was true at that point) and hence she was ok with that.. Ram treated all his mothers equally and there is no insecurity at this point.
It is Manthara who tells her that with Ram on throne, and Sita with him, it would be Ram's children and not bharath who would be next in line. She then uses her best weapon. She talks about how Kousalya would now become the queen mother making her all powerful above every other Dasharath wife, something Kaikeyi was until then at some level as she was king Dasharath's favorite. Manthara fills kaikeyi s ears about how Kousalya will avenge her years of neglect, feeding into the fear that kaikeyi starts having.
The entire set of dialogues and arguments that encompass the story before Ram, Sita and Laxman leave is well worth a study.

You have a point!

The IPC has reminences of British era , which in turn was influenced by the code followed in the epic era ..
Regarding life imprisonment reduced to lesser years ,or they spending at least 14 yrs , the discretion depends on state and the exceptional behaviour of criminal but SC has clearly stated life imprisonment really means 'life' imprisonment. I hope you got my point. 😊

As far as Mbh is concerned , no where in whole Mbh the 12 yr exile is related to the collective number got when dice is thrown ..Shakuni or anybody never say its related to the throw on dice.
One reason might be , as said in puranic tradition 12 is an important number and number 18 , 108 are also very important , specially in Mbh.
12 is associated with mourning period also. The general tendency of human beings, after 12 days of mourning , life starts getting normal and 13th day a sweets are eaten signifying acceptance of the fact that life has to move on
So also in both epics at least 12 years Ram and Pandavas are kept away , in that period citizens would forget them and accept Bharat and Duryodhan respectively.
While Ram had two extra years to spend and Pandavas had to spend a year in incognito. Actually pandavas spend a year and 5 months plus few days to be on safer side , so their exile also nears 14 years approximately !

I had read somewhere that in those times if people went missing for 14 years the they would be considered as dead! So,I guess that would have been Kaikeyi's plan so that Ram could never claim Ayodhya's throne and that would also have been a lot of time for Bharat to establish his rule and the citizen's would no longer revolt.

@Medha: yes, I was always curious to know the significance of this number '14' for Ram's exile, and in MBH too, it was nearby that number.
No doubt, contemporary Indian society has been influenced by our scriptures and epics, even if things are present in symbolic forms.

@Shruthi @Medha @JustlikeThat: U all really shed Halogen light on the topic😊

glad to have such dhurandhars on the forum😆.

Interesting question:

I read this on quora:

There are various theories but following is the one which is mentioned in both Ramayana : Valmiki and Kamba Ramayana.

It was Manthara who chose this period. Because the legal System of claiming proprietorship in the Treta-Yuga, decreed that if the legal owner does not claim proprietorship for 14 years, then the resident of that place can proclaim it as his own. By that was Bharata can claim ownership of Ayodhya.
