THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Urmila sat on her bed, dazed. How did this always happen to them? They first got married together, now she and Sita Didi were...
"Vaidhyaraj, what is the news?", Urmila heard Sita ask the royal physician worriedly. Urmila wanted to open her eyes, but she felt tired.
"Maharani! What do I say?", said the royal physician. "You and your sister are affected by the same thing"
"My Urmila is pregnant?", asked Sita, joy in her voice. She immediately took off a golden necklace and gave it to the physician.
"Thank you, vaidhyaraj, for giving me this fantastic news", said Urmila, smiling at the physician, and bowing to him, after which he left.
"Urmila, rest!", said Sita, looking at her worried.
"Didi, you should also rest then. After all, you are also pregnant", said Urmila, a beautiful smile blooming on her face.
Simultaneously, the two sisters hugged each other, and started crying. Sita heard Urmila mumble, "Pregnancy hormones"
Sita giggled at her sister's comments, hugging her tighter.
"Urmi! Mere Urmi!"
She heard Sita Didi call out to her franctically; she snapped out of her trance, only to see SIta Didi and Ram Bhaiya looking at her with concern. Ram Bhaiya!
Immediately, Urmila got up, and tried to fall at Ram's feet to seek his blessings.
"Urmila", her Ram Bhaiya's voice stopped her. "Don't, little sister. You are with child. Don't bend"
"Ram Bhaiya", she said, softly. "My child is lucky to have you as his/her elder father; and Arya and I are lucky to have you and Sita Didi, who love and take care of us like this"
"Your child is lucky to have you as a mother and my Lakshman as a father", said Ram. "You are our own, Urmi"
He turned to his wife, seeing tears in her eyes.
"Sitae, what happened?", he asked.
"My Lakshman and my Urmi are going to be parents. My soul son and soul sister. They deserve this, for all they have sacrificed for both of us. You are right, Swami. We are very lucky to have them", said Sita, suddenly rushing forward to hug Urmila.
Urmila's protests were hidden by the sudden hug Sita gave her.
Ram smiled at the two sisters, knowing that they were verily like Lakshman and himself. Ram had been selfish, Lakshman came away with him. But Sita and Urmila? They bore their separation from one another for 14 years. Yet, he knew, that when Sita would suddenly go silent, she would be talking to Urmila; Sita and Urmila's souls were connected. It was like what happened when Lakshman was hit by that dreadful spear; Lakshman's soul had called out to Ram, reassuring him. I will never allow that to happen again, thought Ram, fiercely. Looking at the sisters, he marveled at his brother and Urmila's strength. Being separated from Sita for one year was enough to drive him crazy; how did Lakshman manage it? He rememebered, there would be times when Lakshman's eyes would be moist; it meant Urmila was in his mind. He remembered Sita crying seeing Lakshman's pain of separation. They are truly mother and son, he thought smiling.
His thoughts were interrupted as he saw his three mothers enter the chamber.
"Ram", he heard the loving voice of Sumitra. He smiled at his three mothers, greeting them.
"What is happening here, Ram?", asked Kaikeyi. "Why is Sita hugging Urmila tightly, never to let go?"
"Haan Ram. We heard Urmila fainted, so we came rushing to see if she was...", Kausalya stopped.
The three queen mothers exchanged looks, and said together, "We are going to have more grandchildren"
"Ma", said Urmila, walking to them, trying to fall at their feet.
The three mothers lifted Urmila up, shook their head, and hugged her to them.
"Urmila, you deserve this, my little one. You do, for all that you have done for us", whispered Kausalya, tears in her eyes, causing Sita to cry again.
"Dhanyavaad Ma", said Urmila, blushing.
"Urmi!"
"Urmila Didi"
Her two sisters had come.
"You're okay righ..?", came Mandavi, stopping seeing most of the family with her. Following her were Shrutakirti and Shatrughan.
"Come in Mandavi", said Kaikeyi. "Congratulations to the three of you. You are going to be aunts and an uncle again now"
"What? Urmila Bhabhi is pregnant?", asked Shatrughan, smiling joyously.
Mandavi and Shrutakirti rushed in, and hugged Urmila, to which Sita also joined. Then the mothers decided to join in the hug, with Ram and Shatrughan smiling at the group hug.
This was the state in which a worried Lakshman and Bharat found them.
"Lakshman, come in", said Ram.
Urmila blushed, and slowly disentangled herself from the group hug. Lakshman and Bharat paid respects to everyone, after which they looked around for Urmila.
Urmila shyly walked towards her husband, and smiled at him, happiness shining in her eyes.
Lakshman looked at her puzzled, but happy to see her happy.
"You are okay, right, Urmila?", asked Lakshman.
"Yes, I am", said Urmila, softly.
The rest of them all looked at each other.
Ram said, "Bharat, Shatrughan, chalo. Let's go. I have some work for the two of you. Lakshman, stay here with my little sister"
Lakshman looked at Ram thankfully.
"Chalo Didi. Take rest", said Mandavi, leading Sita out of the room with Shrutakirti.
Now, only the three mothers remained with Lakshman and Urmila. Kausalya moved towards them, and enveloped Lakshman into a tight hug, crying into his chest.
Lakshman hugged her back, and whispered, "Ma"
He looked at his other two mothers, who were also tearing up. He looked puzzled and concerned, and turned to his wife. She too was smiling, eyes moist with tears.
Easing Kausalya lovingly out of his grip, Lakshman asked, "Ma, what happened? Why are all of you tearing up?"
"Lakshman, these are happy tears. We are going now", said Kaikeyi, softly pulling Kausalya out of Lakshman;s grip. The three queens holding each other, walked out in happiness.
Lakshman turned to Urmila, and asked, "Mila, what is going on here?"
"Nothing Swami"
Urmila felt an overwhelming shyness, something she hadn't since their first night, and looked down at the ground.
"Mila", said Lakshman, softly. Grabbing her chin, he pulled her up, and asked, "What is going on, my love? Won't you tell me?"
"Vo..", said Urmila, faltering, blushing.
"Raja Ram ke laadli Urmila is blushing? What is happening to this world?", asked Lakshman, eyes twinkling. As he expected, Urmila hit his chest.
"You won't get it", said Urmila.
"Tell me first. Then we will decide", said Lakshman.
"Okay. What is Ram Bhaiya going to be soon?", asked Urmila.
"A father. Why?", asked Lakshman, puzzled. Noticing the heightened colour on Urmila's face, Lakshman realized.
"You are pregnant?", asked Lakshman, awed.
"Yes. I am", said Urmila.
"I am going to be a father! I am going to be a father!", said Lakshman, wonderstruck that this had happened. He felt dazed. The news was taking time to sink in.
"We are going to be parents", said Urmila.
Lakshman looked up, and stared at his beautiful wife; his Mila, his wave of passion, his enchantress, his soul partner, his life itself. She had borne so much for him; yet she stayed strong and loving. And now; now she was going to be a mother, the mother of his unborn child. As he realized this, he smiled widely.
"We are going to be parents, Mila! We are going to be parents", he said, pulling his wife into a tight hug.
"Yes we are", said Urmila, hugging him back tightly. She finally had everything she wanted! Her Sita Didi and Ram Bhaiya were back; she had her loving husband here, and she was ensconced in his loving arms. This is Heaven!
She looked up to see her husband looking at her tenderly; she smiled up at him, glowing with happiness and love.
"Mila, my enchantress, my soul mate, do you have any idea how much I love you?", asked Lakshman.
"I love you more, Swami", said Urmila.
"Urmilae, being separated from you was torture. Yet, you were with me. Always in my mind; I felt your presence all the time, guiding me, giving me strength. My love, if I separate from you once more, your Lakshman will surely di.."
Lakshman's rant was cut off by Urmila covering his mouth with her hand.
"Don't say that, Swami. We are celebrating the occasion of my pregnancy. Don't say all this", said Urmila, eyes filling with tears.
"Sorry, love. I promise I won't say all this", said Lakshman, not wanting his Mila to cry.
"However.."
Lakshman stopped, causing Urmila to ask innocently, "However what, Swami?"
Lakshman looked at his wife with a naughty smile. Urmila gasped, blushed, and looked down, unable to bear the intensity of his look.
Lakshman pulled his wife closer, and lowered his head...
In the heavens, all the Gods cheered and smiled. Two of the most sacrificing souls in the world are finally happy! Yet they sighed, knowing that the royal family of Ayodhya have yet another obstacle blocking complete happiness.
