My original intentions for this thread was to figure out which English version of the Valmiki's Ramayan is the best, but let's make this into a Book Discussion Thread.
There are tons of books out there on the Ramayana, both translations and retellings. Let's start with which books are your favorite and let's talk books 😊

List of ebooks in English, found on Amazon (US) Kindle Store:

The Ramayan of Valmiki - Ralph T. H. Griffith M.A. (Translator); USA Amazon SKU: B00457VJM2

The Ramayana - Arshia Sattar (Translator)

I'm not including Scion of Ikshvaku because Dasarath isn't really Dasarath in this book. It's by Amish Tripathi if you still want to read it though.

Nice idea Shyam.😊
I have not read a particular book, yet. I have read Mahabharata in multiple languages, but not Ramayana.

All I know about Ramayana are from Chandamama (children's comics) I read when I was little, stories heard from my Granny, and discussions regarding stories related to Ramayana written in the form of various articles.

However, I have started reading 'Sita' by Devdutta Patnayak. (I finished his 'Jaya' few months back).

But, I do have fairly good knowledge about Mythology.

So far I have liked how Sita has started, with story of Shanta, Dashratha's daughter. Also, in most of the books, it is Ram's childhood we learn about. Here in this book, we get a glimpse of Sita's childhood and how it shaped her. I will share more when I read more.

I do want to share the blurb given at the back of 'Sita' which says:

Sita consoles Lakshmana when he leaves her the edge of the forest, she is fully pregnant.
"You should not feel angry with your brother thinking that he has abandoned me. He is a God. He abandons no one. And I am a Goddess. I can not be abandoned by anyone."

This was a powerful dialogue which made me pick up the book.

So I had to read this book in college for a class, and even write an essay on it.
It's an illustrated version of the Ramayana ... definitely recommend checking it out, if not only for the pictures 😆. It's a PDF version too.

I would guess that because Ravan asked Brahma for that boon to not be killed by neither demon nor God, Lord Vishnu had to descend as Ram
