Chapter 2

"The divorce of Kunal and Mauli Malhotra is finalised" declared the judge , legally and officially ending the seven years of their marriage, but in all reality the marriage had ended the day Kunal with all his senses pursued Nandini and slept with her, all while being married to Mauli.

Mauli stood up, her heart heavy. She knows divorce is the right thing to do, there was no need for her to be in a loveless marriage, be related to someone who did not respect her and broke her trust. But that did not make heartbreak any easier, that didn't mean that she couldn't mourn about her broken marriage. Mauli sighed and told herself this is the first step to healing, first step to writing her own story.

Mauli snapped out of her thoughts and turned around to leave , where Kunal and Nandini were sitting. There was no trace of sadness on his face, no trace of remorse. Unlike her, he was not grieving for the seven years of marriage, unlike her a part of him did not turn to ashes. Mauli smiled bitterly, why did she even think for a minute that he would feel sorrow. She saw Nandini and Kunal embrace each other; another heartbreak.

Mauli stood up from the chair and tapped Kunals shoulder making him turn around and look at her. The happiness in his eyes sobered down and she could not help but roll her eyes. Before Mauli could say something she saw Nandini hold Kunals hand possessively, as if claiming her right on him.

Mauli laughed lightly surprising the duo. With a smile Mauli gave Kunal a box and said " Open it". He opened the box to find the ring he had proposed her with, her wedding ring, her mangalsutra and gifts he had gifted to her over the years. Kunal looked up at Mauli and questioned " Why are you giving me this ?" he asked weakly as seeing all the things in the box reminded him of their happy days.

Mauli looked at him with raw and deep vulnerability, yet she looked fierce and strong as always. Mauli took a deep breath and said " Because Kunal like I told the judge, I don't want any alimony because I don't want anything from you. Which includes the things in this box, they don't belong to me. Anything related to you doesn't belong to me anymore. So I should give them to the one who gave it to me, I don't care what you do with it. That's honestly your problem" she said curtly.

All kunal could do was nod and reply " I am sorry Mauli, my intention was never to hurt you" he said and a tear fell from the corner of his eyes. Mauli looked at him and wondered why she ever fell in love with him in the first place.

Mauli closed her fist and took deep breaths " Then tell me how was your intention not to hurt me, when you, in all your senses pursued her behind my back, you went as far as sleeping with her. So please Kunal, tell me, how was your intention not to hurt me. Is this your humanity apologising Mr. Malhotra or your ego? My gut says it is your ego, because when I gave you this box it was a slap to your face as It meant I don't want anything related to you." She said leaving them astounded and they both looked at her dumbstruck.

Nandini tried to defend themselves by saying "juzzbaat.." but Mauli cut her off saying " Nandini and Kunal, you could not have stopped yourself from falling in love, but you could have stopped the actions you did in all your senses. Kunal pursued you with choice, and you agreed to be with him by choice Nandini. Sleeping with each other was a choice you made and you could both have waited. What you two should have done, if you even cared about me or respected me, heck if you even had some respect for yourself you would have come to me and told me you had fallen for each other. Yes, it would hurt me but at least I could say you were truthful towards me and did not go behind my back. What you did wasn't a mistake, its a sin. Kunal you betrayed me as a husband and Nandini you betrayed me as a best -friend". She said and they looked down at their feet in shame.

Mauli shaked her head dismissively and said " I forgive you both not because you two are worthy or deserving of it, but I am forgiving you both for my own sake and sanity. I don't want to hold a grudge. How can I heal and allow myself to feel happy again if I hold a grudge? I don't want anything to do with you anymore, you are a stranger to me" she said pointing to Nandini and then looked at kunal and said " So are you, just take care of Dida and Maa" she said and walked out the courtroom.

Mauli waved at Radhika and Dida when she saw them outside the court and went to them, took their ashirward for the new chapter in her life. Mauli told them she was going on two year course in Spain because she wanted another degree while working in a hospital in Spain. They wished her luck and hugged her tightly. Mauli closed her eyes and hugged them back tightly and said " I will call every week" she said before she went off to her rented apartment. When she reached home she packed her bag , trying to get ready for the journey ahead.

On the other side of the city, Kunal and Nandini could not stop thinking about the conversation they had with Mauli, it gave Mauli the closure she needed but for Kunal and Nandini it was just a start to pay for the sin they made. Nandini saw Kunal look at the box Mauli had given him, and she couldn't help but feel insecure.
