First, he said " friendship wala love", that he had strong friendship with Mauli but Kunal mistook it for real love between man and woman. When he met Nandini, he realized that what he has with Mauli is only friendship but not love and what he has with Nandini is real love. So both of you are right...

The PH is giving us answer on the question of what was between Mauli and him vs Nandini and Him.
