“What is this?” Shaurya looked at the strip in his hand and asked suspiciously.
“The temporary solution to your constipated look”, Anokhi replied.
“Anokhi this is not the time for jokes. It is almost 6 now. I have to be home in an hour.”
“That is why I brought you this. Very powerful laxative, instant action. Just mix two tablets in Mr. Taneja’s food and he will forget all about the engagement.”
“And how am I going to do that?” Shaurya asked irritatedly.
“That is for you to figure out. I cannot spoon feed you every time.” Anokhi replied
“I see what you are doing there. Didn’t I say the same thing to you in class the other day. You are taking revenge for that.”
Anokhi gave a mischievous smile and said, “Yes, how can I let go of such a golden opportunity.” Saying this she ran away from there.
In the Sabharwal mansion.
“What is the matter Shaurya bhaiya, do you need anything?” Kanchan said, surprised to see Shaurya loitering around the kitchen.
“No, nothing. Just came to see what all you have prepared for tonight.” Shaurya said, lifting the lids of the vessels one by one.
“If Badi tai ji sees you here, I am in for a big trouble. You know men are not supposed to be in the kitchen. She cannot say anything to you, so she will shout at me.”
“Don’t worry, nothing will happen. So tell me Kanchan. Is there any dish you have prepared specially for Mr. Taneja?”
Just then Devi called out for Shaurya. Mr. Taneja and Sheetal had arrived. All the family members were there. Shaan was sitting quietly looking at the ground. Shaurya felt really bad for his Dad.
After some small talk, Tej said, “So let us not make any delay and decide a day…”
“Umm...Bade Papa, why don’t we finish dinner first and then talk about the date. The food smells so good and I am really hungry. What say Mr. Taneja?”
“Sure, I have no problem.” Mr. Taneja nodded in agreement.
As Kanchan and Gayatri were bringing the food trays, Shaurya got up and took one of the trays from Kanchan, “It looks too heavy, let me help. Is this bowl for Mr. Taneja?”
Kachan nodded. Devi was so alarmed at Shaurya’s behaviour that she shouted, “What are you doing Shaurya? It is for the bahus to serve the food. You come and sit here, by my side.”
“It's okay, Badi ma. I want to serve Mr. Taneja and Sheetal Aunty with my own hands. We are going to be relatives now, aren’t we?” Shaurya said, smiling.
Devi could not say anything after that.
Dinner was almost over. Shaurya could barely eat anything. His whole attention was fixed on Mr. Taneja. How much more time was this instant action drug going to take?
Mr. Taneja finished eating and burped loudly. Then suddenly his facial expressions started changing. Small droplets of sweat appeared on his forehead.
“Excuse me, can you direct me to the washroom?”
Shaurya gave a smile of satisfaction. He got up and said, “Sure, let me guide you.”
Everyone looked worried.
Mr. Taneja came back after some time. He looked exhausted but relieved. He looked at Tej and said, “I am so thankful to you and your family, Mr. Sabharwal. Your food was not only delicious, but it also helped clear my bowels. Please tell me the recipe, I will send it to my cook.”
“You are welcome Mr. Taneja. I will definitely ask my bahus to send it to you. Now may we sit down and decide on a date.” Tej requested.
“Oh, We are fine with whatever date you decide. But I will be abroad for a month. Let us make it after that. Is that fine, Sheetal?” He looked at his sister.
“Yes, absolutely fine by me. So the divorce is finalised, right?” Sheetal asked.
“Yes, almost. We will submit the petition in the court and get the order as soon as possible.” Devi replied, looking a bit uneasy.
“It will be better if we have the engagement only after the order has been passed. After all, our family’s honour is attached to that,” Mr. Taneja said, looking serious.
“Yes, sure. Let us keep it on a safe date. Like say, the first Sunday after two months. I am sure the order will be passed by then.” Tej said.
“Yes, please see to it. I have planned to invest a lump sum on your project. The money is ready. I will transfer it to your account on the day of the engagement. I think we should leave now.”
Everyone got up and went to see Mr. Taneja and Sheetal off. Shaurya didn’t move. “Stupid, idiot, dumbass. It was all my fault. I should never believe a 20 year old. All her plans backfire. Good for nothing.” Shaurya kept ranting.
“Who are you talking about Shaurya Bhaiya”
Kanchan’s question startled Shaurya. “Oh, no one. Just a student. She is really lagging behind. I need to take extra classes for her.”
“Must be a very special student.” Kanchan remarked, naughtily.
Shaurya gave an uneasy smile and excused himself.
The next morning
“I am not going to take ideas from you ever again” Shaurya said angrily.
Anokhi, from the other side of the phone, “How is it my fault if your Mr. Taneja turned out to be a patient of constipation?”
“I don’t know. I am really pissed off right now. The engagement date is already finalised.”
“Calm down, Sir. We will think of something, but first we have to stop Aastha Mam.”
“Now what happened to her? Where is she going?”
“Back to Kapurthala, tomorrow. She was going to leave today itself, but I stopped her somehow. She is not ready to stay here even for a moment.”
“What will she do in Kapurthala?”
“It seems like the news of the engagement shocked you so much that your brain went through temporary amnesia. I think you have forgotten that she works there and her parents are also there.”
“Oh yeah, everything else always matters more to her. Can’t she see how miserable Dad is?”
“What can she do about it? It was your Dad’s decision to divorce her.”
“Why do you always support her?” Shaurya asked, getting miffed.
“Because you don’t,” Anokhi retorted.
“Why should I?”
“Because she is your Mom.”
“And we are going in circles. Do you have some kind of blinkers on that you can see things in only one direction?”
“I am sorry to say this Sir, but you can’t see things properly even with an extra set of eyes. How do you expect me to see with just two?”
“Who are you talking to Shaurya?”
Shaurya was shocked to see Devi standing at the door. He quickly disconnected the call and said, “No one important, Badima. Do you need anything?”
“Can you give Shaan a call? He is nowhere to be found. He is also not picking up my calls. I wonder where he must be. Has he gone to meet Aastha again?” Devi wondered aloud.
“I don’t think so Badima. Don’t worry. I will call him and check.”
“Okay, and when you find him just ask if he has got the divorce papers signed by Aastha. We need to submit them in the court soon to get the order passed” Saying this Devi left.
Shaurya dialled his Dad’s number. No one picked the call. He dialled again, but no answer. Shaurya got scared now. Where did he go so early in the morning?
