In Bhavishya Purana, Yama marries a human girl named Vijaya , which is an interesting story.
Life after the storm
Year three (part 2: Prologue)
He sees her for the first time when he comes to claim her mother's life. Despite the emotions that has basically eviscerated her when she holds her mother's lifeless body in her arms, she remains oddly calm afterward. He has seen people crying over their departed beloved, but she wipes away her tears and calmly holds her little brother in a tight protective hug. At some point, she ends up in bed with her baby brother curled up against her side. She absently strokes his soft hair until her hand grows tired.
She does not cry herself to sleep.
The god of death has seen so many people crying over their beloved, begging to return their souls to their bodies, but he has never seen someone so much strong, so much thoughtful after the death of her beloved mother. And he has never hesitated to claim anyone's life before, never thought about the future of the family they left behind.
Holding the glowing soul of her mother in his hand, Yam thinks about the strong woman he has just met. He doesn't want to leave her alone. But, that just will not do. That too many things have been for him, because of him. This is why this whole sordid business is what it is.
He signals his companions to take the soul to Mrityuloka, where he will have to decide the fate of the soul based on her deeds on the earth. He must not stay among the living after his work being done. He is not expected to do.
But deep inside his mind he wants to stay here, beside her, a few more moments.
It is just the prologue of the next chapter. more will come in two days.

Yam spends the night thinking about her. In the morning he plays music and treats himself to a large breakfast. When he cann't stop thinking, he starts to Yamloka, and reviews his works. He weights the burden of sin and good works of each soul arrived in his abode that morning, and assigns different types of results according to their deeds. Among the souls he spots her mother, and he frowns when he learns what she did with her step daughter in her mortal life. He remembers her face, the tearless eyes, holding her little brother protectively. He can't imagine how one can be so strong, so pure even after living among such cruelty. He hurls the scale of justice aside, and assigns the soul to the cruelest place in the hell.
The Yamduttas watch their master's fuming face, they haven't seen him so angry before. He has dealt with much cruel sins before, but he never loses his temper.
"Lord, The glowing soul of the sinner stands infront of him with clasped hands, her eyes are full of tears. "I am sorry. Please forgive me.
"No, Yam bellows suddenly, there is so much anger in his voice, "No mother should treat her daughter like this. You don't even deserve the hell, Vidutymayi.
"But... Vidutymayi tries to apologize, but Yam simply orders his servants to drag her away. He takes a deep breath and wonders why he suddenly lost his temper. He always listens to the sinners before assigning their punishment, that's why he was called Darmaraj, but he simply doesn't know what comes over him today. But somehow, he can't control his anger with the woman who treated her daughter badly.
Why?
He absently closes his eyes and let his astral body soar over the earth. Surprisingly he finds him standing in front of her door. She is feeding her baby brother, who is still crying over his mother's dead body, whispering softy in his ears. The boy is still shocked, and refuses to eat, but she takes her time. He concentrates his powers to dive deep in her mind. A stream of scenes follows shortly after. Her mother's death, her step mother's cruelty, men ignoring to marry her for her dark complexion, her love for her step mother and baby brother even when they hate her. He finds her surprisingly exceptional, unable to ignore. She is now all alone in her house, unprotected, with her baby brother. He probably should check to make sure that no harm comes in her way, when she is so alone. He is due to meet Suryadev later.
Halfway through his travel, he comes to the conclusion that it might do her some good if someone stands by her right now, someone to help her process her life and all the moving parts of it. Someone to watch over her all the time. Surprisingly, he finds no one more eligible than himself.
He knows it is not right, but he can't stop himself thinking about a mortal girl.
****
Yam knows that she can't see him. He stands in a corner and watches her searching for food in the kitchen, but all of her stores are empty.
"Hai Mahadev! She sighs, there is a sign of disappointment in her face, knowing that she must starve the night. "What can I do? She sits on the ground and thinks for a moment. Then she quickly gathers her things and sets out to find some food from the neighbors.
Yam knows it is not safe for her to travel in the night alone. Men of the village are often attracted by her alluring look, and waiting for a chance to get her. He must not let her walk in the night alone.
He quickly makes himself visible and waits for her to come out of the door. But she doesn't seem to notice him, and continues walking.
Yam does not shrink away. He wants to be seen. Hai Mahadev, he wants to be seen. She needs him. Doesn't she know there are dangers waiting for her outside? So finally he decides quicken his steps and stands in her way.
"Wait... he finally calls her. "I have some rice. You can have them, if you want.
"Who are you? She finally sees him. She looks a bit surprised to find a strange looking man blocking her way. Her gaze is insightful and immediately disarming. Despite having the complexion like the raining cloud, there is a strange attractiveness in her face.
Yam blinks. "...I'm sorry?"
"Who are you?" Now she is suspicious about his intention.
Yam is thrown by the question. He is expecting the first question to be about why he is here. He is (just barely) prepared to answer that question. He struggles. She waits patiently.
"Have I met you before?
Yam clears his throat. "Um. I am here to help you. I know your late father. I learned about your mother's death, so I decided to watch over you...
It is a part of the truth. But Yam thinks it is enough for now.
"That's not who you are."
Yam pauses. "What?"
"I asked who you are, not why you are here."
Yam frowns. "What's the difference?"
She leans an inch close. "I have seen enough men showing mock pity for me. But all of them have same intention. But I know how to save myself from men like you.
Yam feels something sharp cutting his skin. His gaze instantly drops to her hand, and finds the sharp edge of a knife pressed against his stomach.
Interesting. He has never considered her to be that confident. He is...intrigued. He raises his gaze from the knife in her hand, and looks back at her.
"It is dangerous to carry such a weapon if you don't know how to use it."
She laughs merrily. "Oh, do you need a demonstration, stranger? Yam feels the knife pressing deeper into his skin.
Yam smirks. "Feelings mutual. But I am really here to help you. Believe me I have no bad intention."
"Well, She nods, lowering her knife. "Then go. And remember, Vijaya never begs for mercy from strangers.
Yam mulls over. There is something exceptional about her. There is something about this mortal girl that was both honest and intriguing. He had always been drawn to these two.
"You are right," Yam concedes, "But I am not a stranger.
"How?" Vijaya asks curiously. "I can't remember seeing you before.
"Most people don't."
"Why?" Vijaya asks.
"Because They are usually not in the state to remember me when they see me."
"You don't sound like a normal person to me. Who are you really?
Well. This woman really is rather good.
Yam nods. "Do I really need to answer?"
Vijaya laughs. "Yes, you must, stranger."
Yam thinks for a moment. If he gives her his real identity, she will never speak with him again. She will blame him for taking away both of her parents from her. She will blame him for throwing her step mother in eternal hell. If he tells a lie then, he will do injustice to his name as Dharmaraj.
Vijaya watches the strange man observantly. She wears a small smile as Yam searches for a suitable answer. Somehow she begins to believe in him.
"Maybe we can talk later." She smiles, "Until you find the answer.
She leaves. Yam doesn't stop her.
***
The next week passes. Yam continues to ponder what he and Vijaya talked about. Yami notices his odd behavior, and asks what's wrong. But he simply says, When I want to talk, I will. Yami doesn't bother her again. Even none of the Surya family bothers him about his strange behavior. But they notice, he knows. They are worried about him; they are following his every move. But he is grateful for the space they are giving him.
He simply can't understand why he is so concerned about a mortal girl. It is odd that the God of death is thinking about a human girl. But he simply can't let go her alluring face, her confident words, and her question.
Who is he? So simple, yet very difficult to answer. How can a God fall for a human girl?
Leaving his thoughts aside, Yam finally leaves his room in a week. Dhamini is staying at Suryalok while Shani and Kakol are busy with some kind of ordeal in Indralok. Yam is grateful that he does not have to face Shani until a week after the strange incident. Dhamini opens the doors, when he knocks. Mandi follows his mother' trail, and wraps his tiny arms around his uncle's legs. Yam smiles at him, though he seems cautious.
"Mandi, come here ..." Dhamini calls her son, as she notices the haggard look of her brother-in-law. Yami seems concerned about him since last week, and they talked about it. Dhamini feels the need of her husband's presence then. With his Kaldarshan vision, he must have find a reason behind Yam's distress."
"Ah, don't stop him, Dhamini. Yam interjects as he strokes Mandi's head. "Kaka... Mandi stretches his arms at him, and Yam picks him up in his arms.
"How are you, young man? He smells his nephew's baby hair. Mandi gives him a big smile, and kisses his cheek.
Dhamini watches the lovely interaction between Yam and her son with a smile. How quickly time has changed. Even a few years ago, they were enemies, but now the God of death seeks comfort to his estranged sister-in-law.
Dhamini invites him in and asks if he would like a cup of Somras. Yam declines, but helps her get Mandi settled and comfortable. He tells her funny incidents between him and Mandi during their last visit. He can feel her watching him, wanting to say something. He knows she wants to ask what happened, why it happened. He kisses Mandi goodbye. The sweet boy gurgles happily. When he starts to leave, Dhamini suddenly catches his right hand. It surprises him, but he doesn't pull away.
"If you want to blame me about my past behavior, I will not stop you, Dhamini."
Dhamini pulls away and shakes her head. "No, Dharmaraj. I don't want to blame you. I know how much you love Mandi. I know what you curve for all the years..."
Yam nods. "I was stupid."
Dhamini hesitates. "No, you curve for something else. You are not a bad person."
Yam smiles indulgently. "Good. I am happy that you forgave me. But not all people are ready to forgive me."
Dhamini regards him curiously. She is not sure what makes him to talk like this. She is used to his insults and jealousy towards her and Shani. But his different behavior feels a bit odd. She scoots closer to him and takes both of his hands in hers.
"Tell me what happened, Yam. Consider me as your friend.
Yam is amazed by her openness towards him, even after everything happened between them. He takes a deep breath and the door of his mind opened.
Dhamini patiently listens to him. She looks at him affectionately when he finally asks her, "Tell me what's wrong with me? Why I can't forget a mortal girl?
Dhamini smiles. She knows what is wrong with him. Her brother-in-law is in love.
The God of death is madly, deeply, hopelessly in love with a mortal girl.
To be continued...
Next chapter- Shani learns about Yam's problem. Will he help his brother to get the girl? What will be Vijaya's reaction when she learns Yam's truth?
