Is it rude to regift? Here's the answer.

During this season of giving, is it OK to give someone a gift you don't want or can't use?

Or is it in bad taste to regift a gift?

"Like so many things in etiquette, it really matters how you do it," Lizzie Post, the great-great granddaughter of etiquette maven Emily Post, told USA TODAY.

"We've heard some horrible regifting stories where the item comes back to the original giver with the original cards," said Post, who is an author, co-president and spokesperson for The Emily Post Institute.

Is it rude to give away a gift?

It's important to think carefully about how you regift, said Post.

The Emily Post Institute offers four tips, she said:

◾ The gift should have its original packaging and all necessary parts and manuals.

◾ The gift should not be anything unique, handmade, or personalized with monograms, names, or dates.

◾ Make sure you are 100% sure the person you're giving the gift to and the person you received it from would not be offended if the regift was discovered. (Post said it is safe territory if you are 99% sure.)

◾ You have to genuinely believe the person receiving the regifted item would appreciate and enjoy it.

"This is not about getting rid of your junk and just not feeling guilty about it," Post said.

Should you tell the person you are regifting?

It's up to you whether you disclose that the gift is a regift, but sometimes people don't mind or even appreciate a regift, Post said.

The other way to regift safely, said Post, is when you have received two of something and you've decided to pass one along. "You can just be open about that," she said.

' My parents are pressurizing me to get married. I tried my best to resist the pressure, but I doubt if I can hold on any longer.'

She looked at him with kind eyes that shone clearly and brightly with love and understanding and said, ' Your parents have been at it for so long ' and pausing for a moment, looked into his eyes and he knew that she was counting time and tallying their first meeting and not wanting to even give her that struggle, said, ' Eleven years and counting. We met in 2014 when and now it is 2025.'

' Eleven years! ' she exclaimed and then hurriedly looked at him and answered, ' And my answer is the same as it was in 2014 and it will be the same in 2036 if you are still unmarried and in case you propose to me again. Sorry, I want to be single and alone. I am not interested in marriage or relationships.'

His eyes glinted with unshed tears that, like some tiny flower buds, never bloom but die a crib death.

' Okay. I will try and keep trying, and if it does not work out, I too, like you, will remain single and alone.'

She could not help it, for she was not aware of it, and before she knew it and could do something about it, her frustration took form as words and escaped her soul barrier and reached him as sound waves. Loud and clear

' WTF is wrong with you?'

She looked at him in shock, her eyes revealing the anger and repulsion she was feeling about herself.

'It's okay. At least I make you feel something.. even if it is anger and frustration. Yet, they are feelings, and you felt them for me.'

Thanking her, he walked away with a spring, and dance in his steps, imagining that maybe there was hope even now, in eventually breaking down her barriers and making her love him and marry him.
