Gayatri's eyes were glued to the rear-view mirror and since the tractor was moving at a very slow pace, she had a good view of the woman standing by the roadside, next to her expensive Fortuner.
If the woman burying her face in the towel that Ravi had used was weird enough, what she did kind of spooked Gayatri and set her brain matter ticking. She saw the woman slide the towel down her face and down onto her rather large and voluptuous breasts and she did not stop there and slid the towel down between and on to her core and essence and pressed the towel against it.
Then, she was lost as the road curved slightly and became one with national Highway 85 and soon they passed under it and crossed over to the other side of the Highway which was lined with green fields on one side and an embankment opposite it.
Ravi brought the tractor to a halt under a large Tamarind tree and turning to the children, spoke to them in a grave voice.
' Kids, I know that I bore you with the same piece of advice and warnings each time we come here to " Thiru Poigai." But, you kids know the reason for that and also know how dangerous water can be, especially, if you don't know how to swim properly.'
He put out his hand and said, ' promise me that you will follow my words and respect it and not disobey it.'
All the kids screamed in chorus, ' We promise master sir' and Ravi stared at them, locking them with his eyes, talking to all of them and then he pointed to the tallest boy whose name was Thillai Natarajan and then to Mekalai and told them that he was putting them both in charge of the kids.
He looked at Gayatri silently and she understood from his look that they would talk later and in privacy about what had transpired with the woman on the roadside.
They all walked towards the entrance of the lake and it was all Gayatri could do to stop herself from screaming at the top of her lungs for the place was like some exotic wildlife sanctuary.
Trees lined the banks of the small lake on all sides of it and although it was not very large, it did look very deep and forbidding.
' Ravi, don't you think this lake looks a bit scary. I mean, is it safe for the kids?'
Ravi smiled, ' Of course it is not safe for my kids, Gayatri. But, then they are not going to be playing or swimming in this lake but in that small pool' and pointed to a bricked-up portion near the water's edge.
Sighing in relief, Gayatri followed the kids and peered into the pool that was half the size of an Olympic swimming pool but the similarity ended there for the depths were totally different.
She looked at the bottom and told Ravi, ' Right, there is nothing to fear for this pool is just two feet deep and even the smallest tot here is taller than that and can easily stand on their own feet and move around in the water.'
Ravi told the eldest and largest boy Thillai Natarajan, to try and teach the smaller kids the basics of swimming and that he would join them after a little time.
Both of them sat on the soft, cool sand and in the shade of a large tree that looked a bit unfamiliar to Gayatri and picking up a few fallen leaves near them, she tenderly caressed them and asked Ravi, ' Master, not that I am very good at recognising a tree but I think I am just about okay in that field.'
Pointing to the tree above their heads, ' But, this tree looks a bit different ' and pointing to all the trees that stood like soldiers guarding the waters of the small lake, ' I recognise neem, tamarind, mango, fig and banyan treeS but I don't recognise this tree although I am sure I have seen it in before.'
Ravi patted the ground and then slowly leaned back and laid down on the ground with his hands as a pillow and looking up at the tree, ' This tree is called " Neermaruthu or Arjun Tree."
Gayatri too laid down and placing her hands behind her head felt a strange sense of peace fill her soul.
' Ravi, I don't know why man but I have been feeling this sense of Deja vu from the moment I entered your world and Kumarapalayam. It is as if I was meant to come here and meant to meet you.'
Raising her head, she placed it in the support of the palm of her left hand and stared at him and said, ' I feel really comfortable around you, your mother and all these kids and I wish I could spend more time here, maybe even buy a house here someday.'
Ravi turned his head slightly to face her and said, ' I am happy that you feel that way, Gayatri. Until you buy your own house, treat my house as your own.'
She shook her head in disbelief and looked at him with curiosity, ' why, how is this possible?' and pointing to him, ' how are you possible?'
Ravi smiled and closed his eyes and opened his lips and replied softly but with total conviction, ' Anything is possible and nothing is impossible, if you have love and if you care.'
Gayatri stuck her tongue out playfully and ran a hand across her neck and Ravi caught her with the corner of his eye and smiled and said, ' In our local lingo, it is called " Mokka bladupa, Rambam, romba arukkuraan."
' Whaaat?'
' Means, Boring and literally means one is using a blunt blade to slice through another' Ravi explained to her with a chuckle and closed his eyes again.
Gayatri threw some dry leaves on his face, forcing him to open his eyes and ask, ' Now what, ma'am?'
Unsure whether she could, should and also at the same time wondering if it was right or not, she blurted her question, ' Ravi, who was that lady and why was she being so obnoxious and downright rude?'
' Time and life will do that to a person, Gayatri.'
Scooping more dry leaves, she threw up them on his face and asked, ' Oh, oh! so, you know her.'
' Yes, I know her and have known her my entire life for she is, family. She is my cousin sister and her name is Meenakshi.'
Gayatri sat looking at him, absorbing the news and Ravi added the topping to the information that he had just give her.
' Adi is her son, her only son.'
Gayatri hurriedly said, ' you mean, your nephew Aditya for whom you went to the police station last night and again today morning.'
