"People trust their eyes above all else but most people see what they wish to see, or what they believe they should see; not what is really there? Zoe Marriott, Shadows on the Moon

Former Dgp Devarajan stood outside Raman's house waiting for the army commandos to arrive from where they had been lying in hiding, biding their time to snare the assassin who had cruelly murdered their beloved officers only child.

The army commandos came dressed in casual clothes and all carrying sniper rifles and were also fully armed and Head constable Asif and constable Peter stepped back a few feet wary and also feeling embarrassed for having unknowingly intruded upon a covert operation and also for cutting a sorry figure before their fellow officer.

All this movement happened in total silence and in a street in one of the poshest resident areas in Chennai and yet people slumbered on in peace as armed warriors went about their duties fully alert.

One of the commandos introduced himself to Devarajan ' Sir, I am major Akash and these are my commandos sent by the Brigadier to handle this assassin.'

Devarajan greeted them and Akash and the other men nodded their greetings and slowly began to spread out around the compound to nab the two hidden assassins that were inside the compound.

Devarajan spoke into his mic and informed his employee about that the army commandos had begun their attack on the assassins and warned him to stay well away and not get hurt.

It was Major Akash who heard the buzz of an angry bee and yelled ' sniper' and fell to the ground and was followed immediately by his men and also joined by Devarajan and the two cops.

Far away outside Delhi, V.k.Singh glanced at Raman and grudgingly acknowledged with a nod and whispered into his mic ' Brigadier, did you hear Major Akash say the words?' and Brigadier Sooryanarayanan screamed back ' men, I hope that bullet was not from one of your rifles?' and his question got an instant answer from the major in Chennai and who was lying on the road in Adyar outside Raman's house.

' negative sir, not us for all of us are here and it must be him, sir. And sir, bullets not bullet.'

Strangely the Brigadier instead of exploding just cursed filthily and the told major Akash to proceed into the house.

Devarajan took out his handgun and looked at Asif ' go to your vehicle and call for back up and do it quietly and ask them to block all the entry points to this locality. Do it now.'

Head constable Asif looked at Devarajan ' sir, what do I tell the officer and what reason should I give for this sudden request?'

Devarajan smiled ' my name and I think that should do the trick.'

The two Assassins rose from their hiding positions on hearing their leader's orders to go ahead and totally unaware and utterly clueless to the fact that their every move was being monitored by the Army commandos who lay in hiding and who had been lying in wait for them to deliver justice and payback.

With handguns extended in front of them, both moved forward from opposite directions and towards the target which was the occupants of the house in whose compound they were in.

Both Assassins heard a familiar buzz and then they heard nothing and they would never hear anything again, at least not in this life.

From inside the house, Shaktivel saw the army commandos move like shadows into the compound and then one stopped and knocked and spoke hurriedly ' Sir, Mr. Shaktivel, stay inside until Mr.Devarjan returns. You are in no danger but stay inside until we tell you it is okay to come out.'

Shaktivel said ok and then heard his name being called and turned to see Jeeva standing there and the stealthy shadows and their movements caught her eyes and she asked her father-in-law ' Appa, what is happening? what are you doing with that knife and who are all those armed men in our compound?'

Shaktivel quickly explained everything to Jeeva whose only reaction was whispering the name ' Raman'.

' Raman is okay Jeeva and is in no danger. His Sensei Devarajan is outside too and is standing guard around us. So, nothing to worry child.'

But, Devarajan did not remain still for he knew how important time was and how imperative it was to move and move like the light.

Leaving the commandos to deal with the assassins who he knew with certainty were dead, he quickly ran his eyes and scanned the direction from where the bullets had come and began to run in that direction.

There were four high rise apartments from where the bullets could have come from and he quickly ran towards the first one and saw that it was well manned by several security men and a few of them instantly recognized him and saluting him asked him what the problem was.

Devarajan asked them if they had seen anyone come and go in the last few minutes and the security men replied no and then he requested a few of them to go the buildings nearby and enquire if they had seen or heard anything suspicious in the building and then himself rushed towards the last building.

The ten-floor apartment block seemed calm and serene and well lit and Devarajan saw a solitary watchman walking inside the compound and ran towards him.

The man turned on hearing Devarajan's footsteps and quickly came forward and when questioned replied that he had not seen any strangers in the building or in the vicinity of the other buildings.

The watchman then pointed to the cameras and smiled proudly ' total CCTV coverage sir and 24 hours of every day and it observes everything.

Devarajan felt suddenly deflated and tired and whispering thanks turned and was about to walk away when his police instinct kicked in suddenly and turning back to the watchman asked him ' How many flats in this block?'

The watchman hesitated for just a brief moment and then answered ' first five floors are of three two bedroom flats and then the next four are of two three bedroom flats and the final and top floor is a penthouse sir. So, that makes it 24 flats sir.'

Devarajan looked at him curiously ' 24 flats in this ten tower block and just you to watch over it.'Pretty strange it seems.'

The man smiled ' sorry sir, we are two per shift sir' and casually pointing to someone behind Devarajan's back ' here comes my other colleague sir.'

Devarajan turned and saw a woman of slim proportions coming towards him and that was all he remembered along with the tremendous pain that impacted on his head.

' why didn't you just slice his throat and finish him for that would have been one less of a worry?' she said with a tinge of irritation and doubt mixed in her tone and he stood silently looking down at the unconscious man.

' Too much heat and you know how cops are when one of their own is attacked or killed and this oldie is a highly decorated and although retired is still highly regarded in the dept and in the intelligence agencies' he replied.

He looked at her and she slanted her head towards the apartment ' we have already killed two of the security men of this building and with those two you took down back there it makes for four kills today. what is one more you might ask but if we kill this man here it will be five and you know five is my lucky number.'

He addressed her by her code name ' Gulab, na,na. Aaj ke liye yeh kafi hai.( this will do for today).

She looked at him and arched an eyebrow and addressed her lover, partner and mentor by his codename ' Jamun, you are getting soft with old age but it too is a bit of a turn on' and smiling with intent ' the security room is empty and I think we have enough time for a quickie.'

He stared at her as she shook her back temptingly and walked into the building and cursed as he felt the stirring in his groin and quickly joined her in the security room and moaned in pleasure as she dropped her skin tight jeans and wiggled her back.

Killing and even the thought of killing turned her on and the presence of the dead bodies just made her go completely bonkers and although he had tried delving into her past, she had yet to reveal her deepest and darkest secrets of why she was the way she was.

With a strong, single thrust he entered her wetness and closed her mouth with his left hand and gently began to squeeze on her throat like she wanted and desired and began to pound and her instant orgasm made him harder and then he joined her with his own and this only made her come again and again.

A few minutes later, they quickly removed the hard drive from the CCTV computer and left in the car they had come and headed towards the airport and stopped for a brief moment to chuck the hard disk into the sewage stream that the city dwellers called the Cooum river.

A constable stopped the car and looked at the driver who happened to be a female and questioned her in Tamil and she replied back in an accent that was clearly from a very high standard and as expected the constable stepped back and accepted the reason she gave, which was ' i am going to the airport to drop off my husband'.

The constable hurriedly shook his head and let them go but took down the number of the car and then spoke to the other constable ' Ennamma english pesuraanga da. Periya padippu mattum ille, periya panakkaranga pola irukku.'

They turned into Nanganallur and abandoned the car in an empty street and then got into another car and slipped into the night and sped away towards the highway.

The security men of the nearby buildings found the unconscious Devarajan bleeding from a deep gash at the back of his head and quickly called the police and Head constable Asif was the one to arrive first on the scene.

Lovingly and with great respect he carried his hero, legend and former senior in his arms and carefully placing him in the back of their patrol vehicle rushed to the nearby Fortis hospital that was just around the corner, half a km away praying that they were not too late to save Devarajan.

I am sore wounded but not slain
I will lay me down and bleed a while
And then rise up to fight again

metaphorical ecdysis

New skin shining
dead skin floating
whispering here now
gone now or soon

The snake sheds its skin two to four times a year and that number maybe more when it comes to younger snakes.
Many a time, I have stumbled upon pieces of shed snake skin and have stood rooted, frozen as I looked down on the remains of what was now a newer, shinier and a larger snake.

Sometimes I too wish to shed my skin, slip it off a like a cloak and with it cast away many more subtle things and needs with the dead and shed skin.

I wish with the casting away of old skin, I too like the snake emerge anew and vital in thoughts and soul and in action. But, alas, it seems not to be.

Now, unlike the snake, I slough away old and dead thoughts on a daily basis and the faster I try to cast away and emerge anew, the faster the skin grows and is ready to shed.

Stupid grammarly corrections keeps correcting my small i and keeps prompting me to make it capital.

I curse the red highlights and mumble to the screen ' f..k the guy who wrote this software thinking and giving importance to a capital I. Capital God, I can understand but i too.

Just when I am trying to shed my self, overblown and over estimated image of myself.

Well, my fellow souls, the journey and the fight continues and
i go back to shedding and molting old and dead skin along with old and dead thoughts.

Don't you just love, love songs. All of us have a secret list of songs that we listen to or secretly play and sing with it in the secrecy of our souls.

Soft, syrupy, mellow songs filled with caressing lyrics accompanied by a tender voice and even tender music.

Don't we at some point in our lives sit by the window as the storm clouds fill the universe outside and then reach inside and connect with our own dark and stormy soul and then the rain comes falling like the fists of babies on the window panes and you join the rain with your tears and sobs and wonder what the world is, was and will be.

The rain slows, ceases and the dark clouds too disperse and vanish and you rise too with a lighter heart for you have emptied the resorvoir of tears and sadness and now you set about with a new step.

Stop and see the window panes washed clean by the rain and feel your soul cleansed by your tears.

Tears and rain, maybe there to nourish and save all lives and our own life.

The Goddess of poetry asks me,why child, why do you prefer to write with sadness? and I mumble my reply ' how else can one write mother, what else is there to write about that will reach out and grab another soul and make it easier for it to understand what you think and what you feel?

Here is a link to one of my favorite songs that I listen to often and yes, when the rain falls on the window and i sit by it listening to their drums and drones from maybe a heavenly soul that too is crying far away and far above me and all of this.

Novo Amor- Anchor

Took the breath from my open mouth
Never known how it broke me down
I went in circles somewhere else
Shook the best when your love was home
Storing up on your summer glow
you went in search of someone else
And I hear your ship is comin' in
Your tears a sea for me to swim
And I hear a storm is comin' in
My dear is it all we've ever been?
Caught the air in your woven mouth
Leave it all I'll be heaving how you went
In search of someone else
Taught the hand that taut the bride
Both our eyes lock to the tide
We went in circles somewhere else
And I hear your ship is comin' in
Your tears a sea for me to swim
And I hear a storm is comin' in
My dear is it all we've ever been?
Anchor up to me, love.
Anchor up to me, love.
Anchor up to me, love.
Oh, Anchor up to me, love.

"When things fall apart, the broken pieces allow all sorts of things to enter, and one of them is the presence of God." Shauna Niequist

Before he came regained consciousness and before he opened his eyes and saw and heard with his ear, Former super cop and the owner of Global securities felt the touch. The reassuring touch of his student, friend and most importantly a soul who he thought of as his own child and it was his fingers that were holding his arm in them with great love and with great strength and he came back.

Raman saw the flickering of his master's eyelids and tried to get up to call for the duty nurse but he was held back and so he stayed seated and saw his sensei regain consciousness and sighing heavily, whispered a prayer to the God that watched over them.

Devarajan's eyes flickered open and then his lips flickered with a weak smile and it prompted Raman to say softly ' Take your time and don't rush it sensei'.

It took a further few minutes for Devarajan to regain full consciousness and with that done his eyes slowly moved sideways and then in all directions taking in the place he was in although Raman knew he was checking the place out as a cop would do even though retired.

Devarajan saw just the twinkle and glimmer of a smile in Raman's eyes and whispered huskily ' what is funny Ram?'

' Once a cop, always a cop sensei' remarked Raman and Devarajan smiled and replied' 35 years of service.'

His eyes now flared with concern ' Delhi, what happened in Delhi ram? when did you get back?'

Seeing Raman hesitating, he asked ' I see. How long have I been out?'

' Three days sir. You have suffered a fracture, a linear skull fracture to be precise and nothing serious but for the hematoma and the resulting concussion. Your high Bp did not help so they kept you under sedation.'

Devarajan closed his eyes and cursed ' three days. three damn wasted days and such a waste of precious time.'

Raman gripped his master's right hand tenderly ' It is okay sir.'

Devarajan growled nastily ' No ram. It is not okay for it was the silliest mistake on my part to not watch my back and I fell for the most amateur trick and ruse in the book.'

Tear of shame, frustration, and anger directed at himself forced themselves to his eyes and Raman could not take it anymore and said ' Why? why do you judge yourself so harshly sensei? why is it so difficult to accept a mistake?'

Devarajan shook his head ' I don't make mistakes Ram. Not such rank amateur mistakes and not after being in the business for nearly 40 years and not after nearly 50 years of judo training.'

Raman smiled sadly and with his eyes focussed like lasers boring into devarajan's eyes, said 'Koubou ni mo fude no ayamari.Shippai wa seikou no moto' and Devarajan with a smile closed his eyes and replied ' Even the greatest expert or master sometimes fails. Failure is the stepping stone to success'.

Master and student, father and son, friends and all bonded together not as two but one soul looked at each other with great love and understanding.

Raman leaned forward and gently wiped the tears away that were shining on his master's cheeks, catching even the little light that illuminated the room and looked at the wetness on his fingertips with great amazement and asked Devarajan ' why sir? why do cry so?'

Devarajan turned away ' I cry because I failed you and your family, Raman. I think I wasted the only chance the bas***d gave us to nab them and now we don't know when they will strike or who they will strike against and that is what that breaks my heart for I cannot stand the thought of losing you or any harm coming to your family.'

Raman broke down on hearing such emotional words from his master and then whispered ' Master, I think it is they who have failed and they have made the gravest and the greatest of mistakes and I will tell you that they also have made the last mistake they will ever make again.'

Devarajan confusedly ' what? what do you mean by those words, Ram?'

' Sensei, by letting you live and not killing you they have spared not only the lion but its cub and now that we know more, we will be stronger and better prepared. We will not fail again and by saying that it was that hired assassin's last mistake, I meant that he will not be alive to do another one.'

' Not one, son but two of them. Male and female and partners in crime and life'.

Startled, Raman leaned back and repeated ' two, two of them sir.'

They are more precious than the most precious of gems. Diamonds are valued by lakhs, crores and they are valued thus by needs, greed and a monetary system in place that can be changed at the whims and fancies of corporations and powerful individuals.

My diamonds are your tears, all the tears of my loved ones that rather from the belly of the earth have been born in the pain and joy of the soul that is even deeper than the core of the earth and sustains more pressure.

Then there are those tears that rarely come up in the eyes and rarely even show themselves and rarely ever reveal their presence and they are of really high value and are truly sacred.

If you see them when you are privileged enough to see them, smile, thank and repay them with love, trust, and gratitude for they come from great depths of pain and sorrow and yes sometimes from great joy and peace.

Tears, what are they but the sweetness of happiness and the salt of pain and heartbreak.

Do we cry for the one who has gone or do we cry for the one who has blessed you with their presence? Either way, tears are the tearing of souls and are but the real essence of them.

Good morning. I wish you a beautiful day. All the best.

"Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. Eskimo Proverb

"My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness. Dalai Lama

"When you finally accept that it's OK not to have answers and it's OK not to be perfect, you realize that feeling confused is a normal part of what it is to be a human being. Winona Ryder

"A sacred thing is timely silence, and better than any speech. Plutarch

"Self-disciplined begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward. Napoleon Hill

I have been familiar with the second quote and i openly confess that i have been struggling for answers with the third one due to that damn state called " EGO" which has nearly faded away but has in the process left me a master at the art of lying with a straight and importantly smiling face.

The fourth one has now dawned on me completely and again i smile, nod and accept with a straight and rather a dumb expression.

The fifth, I admit is a tough hill to climb and every foot i climb up, it seems two down, slithering and scrambling.

Hey, what not to say or reveal when among loved ones and with whom I feel safe and secure in my own mediocrity and honest mode.

You think you know your best friends very well and that you know them better than you know and understand yourself and then, they will tell you something, reveal some bit of eccentric thing about themselves leaving you lost in thought, with you, not only looking at them in new light but with more love and lots more motivation to protect and defend them.

It does not have to be an earth-shattering facet of their character but a tiny nugget which will only endear them to you more than before.

Devarajan's eyes suddenly turned left and then right and rested on the glass of water that was placed on a stand and Raman rose swiftly and placing a straw in it, gently raised his masters head and let him sip and quench his thirst.

Raman said ' Sensei, I think I better inform the duty staff that you are conscious for there might be some protocols here.'

Devarajan shook his head slowly ' No, Ram. Not for another few minutes and not before we talk a bit more about this situation and I don't feel very comfortable being on my own in a hospital bed.'

Raman remained silent and Devarajan continued ' See, this is what I like and respect in you and is also one of the most important quality in you.

Most people, why including me would have asked, remarked and even joked about what I just confessed about hospitals and not wanting to be alone and yet, you remained silent and your eyes importantly remain open and understanding.'

Sighing, Devarajan looked at Raman ' This is the plague, the worst kind of disease that riddles not our body but our mind and soul. This making instant judgment about another person not knowing their problems or their side of the story. This old disease has mutated and in its modern form is running rampant in our daily lives. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry has an opinion about every damn thing and makes it a point to post it and crudely request for likes. What is the world coming to Ram? Sometimes I fear the world has passed me by and that it would be better for me to give all this up and give live somewhere in some remote village.'

Raman echoed his thoughts ' Sir, that is my dream, wish too. Maybe one day, we call all live in some small village and do a little bit of farming for ourselves and maybe even make some money out of it sir.'

Devarajan laughed ' Ram, sorry that I have to correct you, child but really, there is a lot of money to be made in farming, especially organic farming. That seems to be the current rage now and everybody is in on this eating healthy, vegan diet etc.'

Raman sarcastically ' sir, what is the point in one changing to healthy, organic and vegetarian diets when their thoughts,
lifestyle and characters are rotten to the core.'

Both fell silent and both worried about the future and then Devarajan slowly tapped Raman's hand ' I have hated hospitals from the time I was a little boy. If it was that big scary injection the doctor shoved into my bum, all the while saying it won't hurt, it is also the bitter taste of tablets that swore me off clinics and hospitals. If that was bad enough, seeing my grandparents wasting away in hospitals was even more traumatic for me.'

' Sensei, and yet you became a police officer and not just any police officer but one of the most highly respected, decorated cop in this country. That takes courage, sir. Doing something which comes easily to you is okay but fighting your worst fears, conquering them and going on to achieve great things is a true measure of a hero.'

Raman looked at him ' sensei, you are my hero, have always been and will always be.'

Devarajan smiled humbly ' Ram, I have known your parents for a very long time and I think that all you are and have learned has come from them.'

' true, sensei but then you are not only a master but also a parent to me, and that is why I am considered good not only in Judo but out in the center of the court. I am because of you people, and all that I have learned and made better has flowed from you.'

Devarajan slowly raised his left hand and brought it across and now covered Raman's hands with it and whispered ' Ram, these are not ordinary criminals and when they strike the next time, I fear that they will strike hard and will inflict terrible damage.

But, come now and tell me what happened in Delhi and did you get that criminal Santoshi Lal.'

' No sir, he gave us the slip and was most probably warned by his Assassins here in Chennai and took off and god knows where he is right now.

Devarajan in a shocked voice ' what, took off, what do you mean took off, and took off where Ram?

Raman shrugged his shoulders dejectedly ' He took off in a Helicopter sensei? Can you believe that he has his own chopper and I think he must be abroad by now.'

Devarajan groaned in frustration ' Bad luck ram. Now, it will take all the connections that the Govt has to bring him back but first of all, they have to find out where he is right now. Shit, it took so many years and appeals in the London courts to extradite Vijay Mallya from London, even after the whole world knows that he ran away leaving nearly 7,000 crores in default and in cheating cases and then you have Nirav Modi and his 4 to 5,000 crore scams.'

Raman shook his head ' sorry sir, Frankly speaking, I doubt if we can ever bring this fixer Santoshi Lal back to Delhi to face the charges for first of all what charges can you level against him when we have no proof of him colluding with these assassins. It is one thing knowing the truth but another thing to prove it for in the end, starting from the lowest Magistrate court to the Supreme court, the judge will ask for proof, not hearsay or some flimsy proof, but hard, cold and undeniable facts and proof which our people don't have.'

Watching all this in secret in the large monitor, V.k.Singh looked at Brigadier Sooryanarayanan ' Soorya, I stand by my words and that is, be it revenge and justice for your daughter or be it bringing those responsible for these murders, they can be achieved through this gentleman Raman and that too if you work with him and
co-operate with him in good faith.'

Lighting a cigarette, he leaned towards the Brigadier ' you think you can do that oldie?'

Brigadier Sooryanarayanan ' I can do that and more for I want my child's death avenged and I am willing to die for that.'

The world's out to...
When I got out of bed
and stubbed my toe,
that was the moment
I started to know,

The world's out to get me.
My toast was burnt,
my eggs were nuked,
When I sipped my coffee,
I almost puked.

I got stuck in traffic,
had to go to the loo,
and I felt like I was coming
down with the flu.

The world's out to get me.
I caught a big earful
from my grouchy old boss,
Then I ruined my sweater
with spaghetti sauce.

The world's out to get me.
I schlepped to the park
when my work day was done,
I felt like I weighed
an entire metric ton.

An old lady on a bench
said "Sit with me, dear.
There's plenty of room
for two of us here."

"The world's out to get me,"
I said with a sigh.
"My life's a big mess,
and I don't know why."
"Ah," she answered,
"I can tell from your voice
that it's time for you
to make life's biggest choice.

"I'm just an old lady
but there's one thing I know:
You have to spread love
wherever you go.

"You see,
everyone's scared,
everyone is alone,
and everyone's hurting
right down to the bone.

"Love is the medicine
that all of us need,
but it's in short supply,
very short, indeed.

"Do you know why that is?"
she put her hand on my sleeve,
"Because you first have to give
if you want to receive.

"Take time to listen,
take time to cry,
take time to love them,
give it a try.

"You'll soon discover
you can help people heal,
they'll be drawn to you, dear,
like a magnet to steel.

"Unhappy folks still haven't
learned this truth yet,
that God wants you to give,
before you can get."

As I rose from the bench
and kissed her frail hand,
I said "I think I finally
understand."

The world's out to love me,
I say every day,
'cause my life has changed
in a wonderful way.

I feed souls
starved for kindness,
and genuine love.
I pass it along
from the Source up above.

We're each a pure note
in God's heavenly song,
The world's out to love you...
Pssst: Pass it along.
