Asking a question is the simplest way of focusing thinking...asking the right question may be the most important part of thinking.We thought that we had the answers, it was the questions we had wrong.

V.K.Singh, Additional secretary, office of joint operation, RAW together with Raman sat quietly, listening as the American William Bradley from the Spartan spy Programme, narrated the story of how Shinogai Ahmadi came to America in the 1980s seeking political asylum and then asked him, ' This is old and well-known news that is now documented and part of history and anyone in the world from anywhere can access all this information at a tap of a button or with a touch on their phones.'

Taking a large sip of whiskey from his glass to wet his parched and sore throat and also in an effort to numb the pain that arose from his raging and terminal lung cancer, he asked, ' Please, Mr.William, you asked for this meeting and had it arranged through a common friend and now that we are all here and yet you are deliberately side-stepping the one point that will make sense to me and my colleague.'

Placing his glass back on the table, he asked the question, ' who was the Indian that got this lady Shinogai pregnant and more importantly, do I know him and is he still alive?'

Raman who had been quietly watching and listening to all that was being said smiled and said, ' Boss, this has nothing to do with one of our citizens who got someone pregnant many years ago. Instead, it is about something else altogether and that is something I am sure they will never reveal to us.'

V.k.Singh looked at Raman and then turned back and looked pointedly at William Bradley and then at Dr.Otto from the Mossad, ' This young man was a practising advocate until a few months ago and had a great future laid out for him and yet here he is by my side and amongst us spies.'

Picking up his glass that had a little spirit left, he added, ' He is here because I trust him and his judgement with implicit faith. I may fail and I may be proven wrong. But, not Raman. So, please stop wasting my breath and the little time I have left in my life and tell us the truth.'

The flash drive that was taken out from the decapitated head of Superintendent Manohar was placed into a Ziplock bag and handed over to Madurai Police Commissioner Davidson who carefully pocketed it and looked at Collector Vinay IAS who observed softly, ' Mr.David, it is not an accident that the head of a high-ranking officer was shoved into a spike in the gate of Jagatratchagan's house and the torso left hanging outside the Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple.'

Pointing to the Commissioners' shirt pocket, ' That flash drive is the link, the path that will connect all these random pieces.'

Turning back and facing the Thevar Illam, Madurai Collector Vinay said, ' You know what this means right?' and looked at Commissioner Davidson with hidden meaning who waited for him to continue instead of asking his doubts, and which he did.

' It means that you are a target now and not from the one who did this but the ones inside that house called Thevar Illam. Trust no one and keep everything confidential and safe for it is well known to both of us that for most people, their faith and caste comes before their duty and character and you are in Madurai which is not only the epicentre but the Hypocenter and all that takes places will ripple out and reverberate all over Tamil Nadu and in the capital, Chennai.'

Madurai Police Commissioner Davidson's heart quivered and he began to feel the first ripple from the case and he asked Collector Vinay, IAS, ' You think they will go as far as threatening me and my family?'

' Yes, and I am sure that I am in the same boat as you and I am sure that we are being watched right now.'

Taking out his mobile phone, Vinay IAS pretended that he was checking some message and whispered as he pretended and spoke, ' Davidson, If Manohar could be reached and killed, then who is to say that we cannot be touched or killed. Something big is going on and it is clear now that there are two sides to this war and now it is left to find out who these warring factions are and what they are fighting over.'

Commissioner Davidson nodded, ' Okay, Vinay. I guess I will not be able to do this on my own or depending solely on the discretion and the trust of my men. I think it is best that we both co-ordinate and work with each other.'

Collector Vinay nodded, ' Come to my office later in the day and we will see what that flash drive holds and we will do it on a safe computer and without outside connection.'

Commissioner Davidson agreed and after decided that it would be safer to purchase a brand new laptop to view the contents of the flash drive, they also decided that it would be better to keep the purchase a secret.

Collector Vinay IAS spoke into his mobile and ordered for all the restrictions around the temple to be removed and for normalcy to be restored.

The time was 6.30 am.

The American Paul Smith who had remained silent until now spoke, ' Bill, this cannot be done without taking them knowing everything and they will be of little or no help without that and this meeting will be a waste of time and a missed opportunity.'

William Bradley sighed and nodded, a sign of resignation that prompted Raman to observe sarcastically, ' at last it seems better sense and trust is finally prevailing here.'

William Bradley countered his sarcasm with a resigned reply, ' Mr.Raman, we have acknowledged that you are a rising star in your nation's intelligence service, but you', and pointing to V.K.Singh, ' even he, are both way out of your depth in this matter and by the time our meeting concludes, I promise you, that will wish you had not heard all that was spoken and revealed here.'

He turned to Paul in a sign that meant for his colleague to go ahead and he did.

Paul Smith started by asking them what they knew about the word Sparta and what a spartan stood for.

V.k.Singh answered, ' Sparta was a kingdom in ancient Greece and people belonging to that land were called Spartans.'

Paul Smith looked at Raman as if he sought a more refined but a deeper meaning and understanding of the word Spartan and he was not disappointed.

' The word Spartan was made world-famous by the film " 300" that released in 2007 and was a huge hit all over the world.'

He said it and looked at Paul who said, ' please, go on.'

' The film " 300" is about a handful of brave greek warriors taking on the mighty Persian army led by King Xerxes that is true and is a well documented historical war which itself is called the " Battle of Thermopylae". In the war, a few thousand brave Spartans fight an army that is nearly 200,000 to 300,000 strong and defend a narrow pass for seven days and in the end, are betrayed by one of their citizens and are killed in battle.'

With an expression full of pride and respect for the brave Spartans, Raman said, ' from this legendary war rose many famous sayings. It is said that when Spartans neighbouring states required their help, only one or two Spartans were sent and which was more than enough for a single Spartan could take on hundreds of enemies in single combat and without losing breath or dropping a bead of sweat.'

Paul Smith clapped and said, ' Bravo, sir. Well put and this is how our own Spartan spy programme started after our twin towers were bombed by AL-QUEDA in 2001.'

Raman ignoring Paul's revelations instead turned to his senior and said with a twinkle in his eyes, ' Boss, you see what is going on here?'

V.K.Singh shook his head and replied, ' Sorry, my young prodigy. We both know that your mind works on a different wavelength and that is something which I can never hope to match, ever. So, illuminate me as to what is going on here.'

Paul Smith smiled and said, ' Raman, you think you know everything but you don't, good sir. There is more to be told.'

Raman held up both his hands in an act of surrender and said, ' hold on for a moment, Mr.Paul, and leaning close to V.K.Singh whispered something in his ear, whose eyes opened wide and exclaimed, ' no way, Ram. that is a bit too far-fetched.'

Raman ignored him and taking out a pen, quickly wrote something on the napkin and then folding it several times, handed it to William Bradley and said, ' open it after we are done' and looked at Paul Smith who continued with the Spartan programme story.
